Did you work in a team?
N/A

Was the resolution a challenge?
My developer experience has all been on Pico-8 so far, so halving the resolution was not terribly difficult.

What did you learn?
During the jam I refined my knowledge of Pico-8 and learned a bit about how to make an enemy follow a player.

I like your concept where you don't know what the "monster" is, but you know when it's near. Very effective.

The brick floor was a little disorienting, but everything else was neat.

Developer

Totally understand that. I've struggled to create good Pico-8 tiles that aren't a little harsh on the eyes.

Cool Idea, could be a great base for a horror game

I WIN?

:D Interesting concept on a game. I’d think it would be hard to do ‘horror’ games in such a small resolution.. but you pulled it off.

Super minimal, but effective. Good work here. The music reminded me a bit of the Friday the 13th on the NES. Something about that tone of the music, real effective at being creepy.

Neat concept. The design decision to have the screen shrink in around you to convey the monster coming is pretty clever. Once I read through your whole description and understood what was going on the game was more spooky. I beat it on normal but I can’t figure out the trick with the monster on hard. It keeps killing me lol. Good job!

Fun little game. Took two quick deaths to understand the mechanic fully, but once I got it I enjoyed it.

As others have pointed out, the initial speed of the monster made it difficult to tell if it was moving. My first impression was that I was running into static trap zones in a maze.

BUT once I sat in place for a moment instead of running full tilt and noticed the screen shrinking as -it- approached, it got a little spooky!

Played it once without realizing that there was a monster - I just thought that the screen was "clipping randomly". But when I read the description again and picked up on that info, the tension in the game grew significantly. I found myself even being a little scared! I liked the sounds and the art, just wished that the experience evolved over time, since right now it's a bit repetitive (maybe the game could get harder?)

Thanks for the feedback! As of right now, the monster does speed up as you progress but its not necessarily noticable. If I work on it further, I might add sound and visual effects to communicate the increased tension and play with the idea of where to take the game further.

I really like the idea. game was executed very well! Sound was decent too. Good work! :D

I like the idea. I almost feel like the monster needs to follow you quicker because the two times I played I was able to escape the game closing in on my too easily by just moving in another direction without issue.

Developer

Thanks for sharing feedback! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Were you able to try the game on both difficulties? Hard mode is twice as fast and I'm curious if it feels different than normal mode.

Submitted

I definitely feels more difficult on the hard mode.

Interesting mechanic.  It seems a bit unfair, as I could not see the monster...

Though, I suppose seeing the monster would have made it too easy.  I will have to try again!
