How does your game fit the theme?
In the game, you only set the initial conditions on the grid of cells. After pressing play, you can no longer control anything. Instead, a simulation unfolds, with each cell behaving based on its own set of rules.

Very good

when I click the button step by step it leads to one solution, and continuous playback leads to another solution, is this how it should be? I recorded a GIF with the gameplay: BUG may be?

Developer(+1)

Definitely a bug, the game's not deterministic (even though it obviously should be). Thanks for letting me know!

I wish I could make games like this! Hope you win!

nice job, this is a really good game :D its very creative! i know it had been said before, but a sanbox mode would be awesome

Loved the game, similar to Conway's game of life you can create so many possibilities out of very few rules. I would love to see this game be expanded to have it's own level editor and be able to see all the crazy puzzles people come up with.

Developer(+2)

Thanks so much! I might keep working on it...

Excellent. Best game I've played in the jam. A lot of potential.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! (but there're many better entries haha)

Submitted(+2)

Awesome! Also, I somehow managed to create a machine that has a different outcome each time you play?

(+1)

I also did that too but with a different setup I forgot though

Developer(+3)

Yeah turns out the game isn't deterministic at the moment (I don't think it would be too hard to fix though). Thanks for checking it out!

This is genius. I think making a cellular automata into a playable puzzle game is a cool and original idea. This has lots of potential to be a complete game. My favourite game from this game jam so far!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for checking it out!

Just finished. Reaaaally good! I think it's my favorite now, it's so satisfaying to see it working and it just looks good. Had lot of fun!!

Very cool puzzle game :D
Just balanced as it should be,  Big GG for the level design! I really just loved it !

This was a really fun puzzle game! I managed to beat every level except for level 11. Spent like 15 minutes on just that level and got stuck before moving on to all the others. Smart idea to add a level selector in case anyone got stuck so they could continue.

The level design was really fun, post processing and art have a great minimalistic look. I have no criticisms, well done :) I like it a lot

great game! before i give any criticism, let me say this is one of the most creative puzzling ideas i have seen in awhile. very fun and satisfying, so know that you did a great job. here's where i think you can improve:

i came here from your video and let me just say i personally prefer the original, minimal art you used to the pixel graphics in the game. i also think this game is in dire need of some level music. as for the levels, they are fun, but need some balancing. there are definitely random difficulty spikes (where levels in the middle are harder than the last few levels) and also are some holes in certain levels, meaning that the level design is open enough to allow for multiple solutions. now, multiple solutions is not a bad thing, but if the player can just sort of mess around until they flood the screen, it takes some of the skill out of the problem solving, and makes the victory feel less satisfying. but these critiques are all mostly fine-tuning concerns and given the 48 hour time crunch, you turned out an awesome game. good work!

theres no sandbox :(

Nice feel Sam! I like the post processing pass on the top. I'll add my voice to those who want sandbox mode!

Very neat game, though I feel like the level difficulty is unbalanced. Some levels make me think I have no idea what to do, some levels are just fooling around until I get a tumour that floods the entire level (though those moments are somewhat fun, if not very puzzly). Maybe this would work as more of a sandbox or a zach-like optimization game rather than a classical puzzle.

Another note: The art is not bad but I felt the pixel shading was messy and made the game feel poorly drawn (there's not enough pixels to do random dithering), your original sterile vector graphics (as seen in your video) weren't so bad this kind of game. Personally I'd stick with the pixel art but I'd use much simpler maybe even single colour blocks with symbols painted as is.

It is a really fun game and i think you will work on it more but sometimes the mechanics don't work the way they should (if you put 2 blue pieces so that the one is pushing the other, the first will sometimes go 2 spaces and sometimes 1) and if you change 2 of the same pieces in eachother's position the result usualy is completely different than not changing them. Which could make it really hard to complete a level (even if you were doing it the right way all along)

Yep the game has tons of bugs right now. Ideally it would be deterministic but my hacky solutions led that not being the case lol. Luckily I know how to fix it!

Someone sent me your video because I made a game based on Conway's Game of Life. I was excited to see your take and it did not disappoint. I really enjoyed the puzzles in this game, the art and sound design all worked together, and it left me wanting more! Great work

Developer

I literally just played your game haha. Awesome work on that!

love it

The idea of cellular automaton is great for this theme. However, the game is quite difficult. I think this is mainly due to poor introduction of mechanics. I found level 8 and 13 to be pretty difficult, but I managed. While level 11 and 15 were too difficult. The other levels were all right. Though, this really depends on seeing the solution or not. I also had a very strange solution for level 16, but it worked. There is also a bug with the generator block, it can duplicate the boundary wall, which I don't think was intended. Though, it could make for an interesting puzzle.

Developer

Yep I agree. Difficulty is all over the place
