Really got some Persona 1 (PSP Version) vibes there :D  I wish there was some more in game tutorials for the attacks like others have said and the level is a bit empty! The atmosphere and graphics are nice though and the combat is solid (Once you check the game page haha!)

Anyway really good work :)

A combat tutorial would have been nice! I landed on little swirls to get the combat done haha.
*edit* Reading your game page would have been a great starting place for me instead of jumping right in lol

Nice little game with interesting combat mechanics (attack AND block) and nice little characters!

It's a pitty that there is not more content in the game itself (it felt a bit empty), but I think something much better can be made out of this base.

The theming and atmosphere are incredible, and having vocal tracks is amazing! I love the environmental details like the corndog chapel and the little text blurbs that come with them. Naming my character in a game that's in a mall made me feel like I was actually playing as myself in a way.

The combat is also super cool! I was very confused at first, I thought I just had to scribble, but then I saw how the gestures worked on the main page description. I wasn't able to quite nail defending the dog cop's attack patterns, so I always was losing a lot more health than I could gain on those battles.

Loved this entry, great job!

I really like the sigil drawing idea but I'm also really bad at it. I love the enemies. The skateboarding bird cracks me up (until I try to draw on him!). I did start to have more success with drawing the spiral as I played though but it's rock paper scissors so I need to get better at drawing the other symbols. The music fits really well, also.

I really liked the theme, it felt pretty original, and I think the visuals did a good job giving you that feel. I struggled a couple times before reading the description and seeing that the combat was gestures. It would have been nice to have an initial screen for that. Otherwise I thought it was really well done.

This was fun, I enjoyed the esthetic and the soundtrack was great.  I did have a hard time reliably drawing the sigils but when I got one it was pretty satisfying.

The UI is well done and everything is so cohesive.  I would have loved a difficulty setting, or maybe failing a sigil still does 2 or 3 damage so it's not quite so punishing.

Really nice work!

Well funny seeing you folks here! I'm really glad I got to try this out but I'm sorry to say I just didn't manage to finish it.

First of all I love the overall tone of the game, very much captured the feeling of a dystopian mall with the music, statues and general liminal atmosphere.

I think the movement speed could've been a little faster with how much ground there is to cover, but the movemnt itself felt good I thought.

I liked how smooth the map transition felt, just generally I thought the UI was very well done!

I also really liked all the little details on the save/trash deposit stations, with the squash and stretch for when the cooldown is over.

And I thought the combat was incredibly unique, but I think would strongly benefit from a bit more explanation in-game to make it idiot proof. I got it after a couple lengthy battles where I dealt lots of 1 hitpoint damage and suddenly by accident a 44 hitpoint damage and decided to alt-tab back to the game page. I guess that's what I get for skimming lol. Once I understood it though it was very neat seeing all the different patterns of enemies.

And further on the topic of combat, I think the price of soda is a little too unforgiving. I had restarted a couple times because I got to a point where I had less than 10 hitpoints left but just wasn't able to defeat enemies fast enough to avoid damage. It got really easy I found to get into a vicious cycle of combat giving negative returns. Which was fine for the more optional fights, but discouraged me from continuing on the level after the escalator where I was really far away from a save station, and just barely scraped by all the enemies only to be killed by a trap.

Oh and imo the traps should disable as soon as the player clicks them, about a half dozen times I would get clipped by a trap AFTER I had disarmed it but before it had vanished into the ground. It felt less like rewarding patience and more like bad visual communication.

For my experience the combination of the last two paragraphs made extra exploration not all that appealing, as I was more likely to be harmed than rewarded.

But back to the positives, I think this was overall a very well made and polished game, and the audio work was definitely top notch. From the anti-consumerist music to the absurd announcements over the malls speakers, and even the little effects during combat every part of it was well done!

If this was a smaller and more forgiving game I think this would be one of the better dungeon crawlers I've played in this jam. Excellent work!

Oh man! We didn't recognize your name even after we played your (excellent) entry. Clearly we just have similar (read: great) taste in jams. I can't believe we're going to lose to you twice in a row lol!

My goodness this was fantastic once I figured out how to play. A little too difficult for me. I would have loved to have $1 sodas :P

Thanks for sharing this!

Great game! Loved the mechanic of drawing, even though I didn't get it at first. Would have loved a tutorial or some kind of visualization. Loved the mall/corporate theme. Cool visuals, and overall a really fun game :).

I love getting beaten up by goth girls. Wait a minute....

Excellent battle system, like the  others have mentioned a little tough to use initially without tutorialisation. I ended up having the symbols up on my second monitor which worked out well, but probably isn't ideal or intended.

Visually it's all great, I enjoyed the both the artstyle and the music was a lovely touch. Movement was good too.

I found I had to be extremely accurate with blocking and there were occasions where (I think anyway) the shield was occluding the fist fully, but only just up to the edge, and the hit would come through anyway. Not sure if I missed anything on that mechanic or it's just a case of gamers thinking hitboxes are bigger than they really are.

All in all a really solid entry, thanks.

Well done with the graphics and art style. The music is also cozy for a dungeon-crawler type game, with the occasional up-tempo beat probably during combat. Although, I ran into a rat mall with a crowbar and didn't know how to damage them. I got a game over screen and the game restarted me into a blue void.

Developer(+1)

Oh no! This is a good catch. You can either save at the Pneumatic Tube Station where you first spawn, or go back to the Main Menu and then start your file again. But obviously you shouldn't just be banished to the void!

Innovative battle system, but very hard to use. I at first tried to draw the shape too fast and the never worked. You have to draw slowly it seems. Its only three shapes, but I had a hard time remembering them. The graphics are very distinct and cool, but I think that the enemy sprites don´t really fit. Some 3d models, like the statues at the plaza at the beginning, would look cool as enemies. The vocal song was a nice touch. Movement is fine and snappy enough.

I was very lost through my playthrough and i had to try out the different elements to find out whats effective, not sure that was intended. The combat was very creative and fun, and i loved the aestethics!

Fairly hard to learn how to play, but actually fun once you do. Needs some real tutorials for the combat. It took me forever to understand exactly how it worked, so there was a lot of dying and going back to same spot. The mall layout is a bit to hollow and there are vast corridors you just have to pass to get to the action. The map is good to have, but since the area is even larger than what the map shows its not that useful all the time. You kinda have to walk to each corner to see if thats marked on the map as a point of interest.

That said I did manage to beat the game. I never really understood which pattern to draw when, so I kinda just guessed until one stuck on an enemy and then went with that. Also the stamina thing was hard to master. You kinda draw a pattern and if you are just a millisecond past the stamina amount it does almost no damage. The eyes are focused on drawing, but at the same time you have to beware of the stamina amount. Maybe just have the drawing stop when the stamina runs out and have the drawn pattern be that part?

Thanks for the game!

The graphics and atmosphere are just stunning. The gameplay is pretty innovative, even if it might be a little frustating at the beginning, i had some troubles figuring out how to correctly draw all the symbols. Really liked this game!

I absolutely love that liminal space atmosphere, the vague creepiness of it all is delightful! The songs are really cool, you've really nailed it on the mood, it's very cohesive and fun to explore.

I wasn't able to get past the bird after the locked door on the first floor, but that's just me being bad at drawing shapes with the mouse under pressure. I wish there was a little bit more forgiveness  with healing, like healing the player for free if they faint with not enough money to buy a soda. It felt to me like healing was in very limited supply and I progressively took hits faster that I could heal them. If found myself stuck nowhere after losing the very first fight without saving (yeah, I did that, too) and had to reload the game, but that's minor and it didn't happen again after I saved.

All in all, I loved the graphics, atmosphere, music, concept, even though I struggled a bit with the controls. Great job!

"Who needs friends ... when you have money?"

I beat the Dreams of consumption.

The game was very cool. I like that you have at least some basic dungeon mechanics (levers, traps) and the combat system is fun, I really like the progression between the successive types of enemies and how they all work differently. Also I can use the power of Anarchy. Finally one of the reasons why I had so much fun is that the difficulty was perfect for me for a game jam.

Such big areas can be fine, this movement speed can be fine but I thought that with such big areas the movement speed was eventually too slow. Don't get me wrong, it's far from ridiculous.

Thanks for sharing the game!

Beat the game! I love the backroom aesthetic. The graphics and the mall music are awesome. But the map could be improved, I have a hard time noticing the glass and concrete walls. Also the sigil drawing shape detection could use some work especially for the Anarchy sigil, I have difficulties drawing those. Awesome game!
