Yes! It really does use FM synth. I started creating a tool to do OPL3 audio after the limited jam in the Fall. Here is the result: https://chipcomposer.com/tracker

The framework I made for this has an API to interact with the library. Originally, I wanted to have dynamic audio (e.g. same combat melody but different instruments depending on the enemy) but I didn’t get that implemented in time for the jam.

But, I had a ton of fun composing all of the music in the tracker / composer I created.

I’m glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for taking the time to play, rate, and comment. Much appreciated!

Big fan of puzzle games like this. It makes me want to create a reverse escape room game! I loved it.

Thanks so much for creating and sharing this with the community.

This was very fun and nostalgic! Loved the overall look and feel of this one. I loved being able to smash and burn my way through it.

Thank you so much for creating this and sharing it with us!

Fantastic little entry! Controls were a little tricky at first but I did get the hang of it after a few tries.

I really enjoyed the implementation of Rock, Paper, Scissors! Great job!

No worries! I had a great time. Looking forward to your next entry :)

A solid and classic Dungeon Crawling Experience! What else could you ask for?

Very enjoyable, not too hard, not too easy! Thanks for sharing this with us!

I found a rag, I cleaned a room, I washed a rag, I ate some food. Then, I did it a hundred more times! Maybe even a thousand more times!

My carpal tunnel thanks you.

Goodness! This game was fantastic (even if I had to switch my screen resolution from 4k to 1080p). Sprites were phenomenal, environments were well thought out, and the combat mechanic was not too difficult to figure out.

Overall a fantastic experience!

Really nice ambience / horror vibes in this one!

The card mechanic was confusing initially because I think the combat is bugged and it seems the bonuses to “next attack” do not work. I did end up making it through to what I believe was the final encounter before the game crashed.

I loved that switching between weapons changed the deck! Very cool idea.

I think I would love a fully functioning version of a game like this.

Great job. Thanks for sharing it with us!

A solid RPG Maker entry. It could use a little love with custom assets / enemy balance. Because it is using stock assets, it looks almost identical to a couple entries I’ve seen in other game jams.

Game play wise, explanations were nice and it was good to have the ability to swap controls.

Given that the cost of items in the store is so high, it would be great if enemies dropped more gold. I’m not sure it is possible to grind enough to upgrade the whole team.

I did make it to the Crimson Dragon using the smoke bombs but it was impossible to beat it.

Thanks for creating and submitting this!

One of my favorite entries so far! This had me laughing out loud like a madman.

What a fun little game! Loved the visuals and atmosphere. I think for the jam version, the buildings could be a little smaller with only the 2 different enemies. It did feel like a lot of the same! That said, it did not overstay its welcome but, I did not want to grind through it again to fight the boss after the game crashed.

Overall, great work! Thanks for making this and submitting it.

As always, fabulous entry. I really enjoyed the card mechanic once I figured it out. Thank you for making the enemies quite forgiving!

Loved the Easter Eggs in there. Thanks for making this.

A solid entry. That Fire Starter… I mean Fighter left quite the mess!

Thanks for making this and sharing it with us.

My goodness this was fantastic once I figured out how to play. A little too difficult for me. I would have loved to have $1 sodas :P

Thanks for sharing this!

I loved the idea of interactive / timed crafting that this one aimed to do. Fantastic art and assets! The music was also a bop! Great work. Thanks for sharing it.

A solid entry all around! Fantastic art and theme implementation. Only wish there was more puzzles! Great work.

Thank you for taking the time to play, rate, and leave some feedback!

This is a custom engine I built specifically for doing ANSI graphics on an 80x25 terminal with xterm.js supporting the web version / output. Also a custom audio engine for doing FM Synthesis for the music tracks / sfx to emulate Sound Blaster 2.0.

I’m glad you were able to make a little gold begging in town!

Again, thanks for commenting!

Thanks for taking the time to play, rate, and comment! We’re glad you enjoyed it.

Thank you so much for taking the time to play it through to the end. Sorry if the “ending” was too disappointing. We felt the game was a bit too long (and also, time was not on our side) so we had to cut a few things there at the end.

Appreciate the feedback!

Ha! I’m glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully, the ending was not too disappointing :P

Thanks so much for taking the time to play, rate, and leave some feedback. We really appreciate it. We had a great time working on this.

Definitely planning on coming back to this one. Just soooo many to get through still. :P Thanks agin for making it! Love your style.

What a solid little entry! Enjoyed it from end to end. Only real complaint is that I wish there were more!

Once again you’ve created a visually stunning game. I loved every minute of it… minus the 60 minutes trying to get the resolution to work. BUT, every other minute I loved!

Only thing this was lacking was a nice ambient sound track.

Thanks for making this wonderful game.

What a joy to play this one! Thanks for sharing.

Keyboard controls were solid! Ambience was great. Really nice graphics (though someone in the chat reported it made them feel a little seasick watching someone play it).

Very few criticisms of this one. Not sure why the game had strange lag on my system but I had a great time with this one!

Thanks for taking the time to play! I really appreciate it and am glad at least one person was able to get the LORD references :D

It isn’t obvious, but the game does save your progress whenever you transition maps so, if you decide to return to Tide Haven, your adventure may continue.

Regarding the Treant / all enemies, they forecast their next attack which gives you an opportunity to switch armor to defend. If you switch to the correct elemental defense, the enemies will not be able to heal themselves. I tried to put hints about this but I should have been a little more heavy handed with it!

Thanks again for playing!

Thanks so much for taking the time to play! The game does save your progress so if you decide to return, you should be able to resume your quest.

Let me know if you want any hints. I suspect Seth might also be able to help you.

Just a heads up that you are not using Grid Based Movement for your game. You have 90 degree turns but movement needs to be step based on a grid. Yours allows free movement forward and backwards. If you have time to update the movement, you should do so. Otherwise, your submission will need to be disqualified.

This is likely fine. But, you should consider these two relevant items from the FAQ:

  • Can I start working on the game before the jam starts? No. The game must be a new game project started and finished within the jam time frame, not just another week of work on an existing one. You are, however, strongly encouraged to have a working first-person grid-based view and movement set up ahead of time.

  • Is it okay to start working on feature X before the jam? If it’s a feature useful in making any dungeon crawler (e.g. rendering, movement, interactable doors, general UI), then probably yes, but if it’s specific to the particular game you want to make, then probably no. One way to think of it: if it’s a feature generally already provided by another engine such as Unity or RPG Maker, implementing those features in your engine of choice is reasonable prep work. No. The game must be a new game project started and finished within the jam time frame, not just another week of work on an existing one. You are, however, strongly encouraged to have a working first-person grid-based view and movement set up ahead of time.

Note: I know many people who participate reuse / repurpose their previous combat systems each year. For example, I have a dice rolling system that I reused / cleaned up prior to the start of the jam last year. It is generic enough that it can fit in many games.

How do you use potions?

I’m surprised there are no kings to check in this game.

I enjoyed sticky buns and butt holes. Just wish it was multiplayer so someone could check mine.

~~I couldn’t get the keys to work.~~

Never mind. I had to click into the HTML5 canvas first.

Welcome back!

I absolutely love rhythm games. Unfortunately, it is impossible to play with Bluetooth headphones without a calibration option to adjust for the 25ms delay in the audio.

I will give it a full playthrough off stream but you can watch me struggle with headphones here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2699355240?t=01h49m16s

With a solid tutorial, this game would be near perfect! I would love to see it come to mobile. Great little puzzle game.

Really interesting game! I think I would love something like this but I need a little more tutorial to fully understand how the mechanics of the cards work. I was a bit lost.

A solid start to some interesting mechanics! Thanks for sharing this.
