New human verification fails on app

The newly introduced human verification fails every time when on the desktop app. It works fine in browser.

I have the latest version of itch, butler, and itch-setup.

Issue is resolved with latest version of the app, please let the app auto-update or update it through the preferences page.

Likewise. Same issue here. Cannot do ANYTHING on the Itch app because of the Cloudflare verification that may very well be a fake phishing malware from what I am reading online. It didn't even attempt to verify anything on my Windows browser. Never even saw the page.

(+1)

I am seeing the same issue.

i'm having problems with it on the browser.

the verifying that you are human is a stupid consept.

I can log in through my browser but not through the app. Ive had this happen on my browser before, clearing the caches and cookies fixed it. Doing the same on the app does not fix the issue.

That's not the problem... The verification existing isn't an issue. The issue is that it doesn't work.

(+4)

What he's saying is that it shouldn't even be there in the first place, and that Itch shouldn't try to fix it, they should remove it entirely.

(+9)

I know. I am capable of reading. I vehemently disagree with him.

(+3)

Saaaaaame

(+3)

here to say the same. I hate cloudfare, this has happened on other apps and sites before too

(+2)

I can navigate to relatively static pages like the front page or individual project pages, but anything involving searches or tags gets me an infinite verification loop in the app. The regular Chrome browser works fine, though.

The root cause might be because an old version of embedded Chrome is used in the itch desktop app, and it’s incompatible with Cloudflare’s human verification. Fixing it might mean either moving the app codebase to a new version of Electron (which could be non-trivial) or somehow allowing the itch app to bypass the “I’m Not a Clanker” screen.

(+1)

I have issues on browser.

In my experience, Cloudflare is fare less reliable than Anubis.

(+2)

I'm also having this issue as well. Fine on browser, but not on the app.

(+1)

Also having problems.

(+1)

me too <3

(+1)

same. hate this.

(+1)

Same here

(+1)

also having the same problem... browser works fine. i tried enabling 2FA but that didn't help either...

(+1)

Me too.

(+2)

Same here, how do we fix this???

(+1)

Send a mail to support@itch.io asking to use Anubis instead of Cloudflare.

use a vpn

Yes but which one ? And on which country ?

not working for me either; it strangely doesn't apply to the front page or the explore page but DOES to any of the subcategories.

TEMPORARY FIX!!!!!!!!!

-In the top right of the app, click the three dots and select 'Open developer tools'

-Click the Network tab at the top, then click on the little Wi-Fi symbol with the little gear (Should say 'More network conditions...' when hovering over it)

-In the 'User Agent' section, uncheck the 'Use browser default' and in the dropdown below it pick probably any, I selected Chrome - Windows.

-Then click any link that would infinite loop you or refresh the cloudflare looping page.

This fix will work as long as you have the dev tools open but only for 1 tab at a time, as you cannot open multiple dev tools windows.

Thanks that was helpful.

(+1)

Interesting, but didn't work for me after selecting both Firefox-Windows and Chrome-Windows.  :(

You might be able to get around it now by changing the url at the top from 'https://itch.io/' to 'https://itch.io/games/'.

I tried out the App the 1st time today. Same problem here.
Your fix works perfectly well, thanks. But (a) for normal users, this is not a solution => they will just never use the App :-(
(b) is there a way to set the user-agent to something working for the whole itch.io App? Maybe from command-line (I'm on Linux but that should be analog to windows regarding cmdline args).

(+1)

It's interesting that this seems to work for some around here, but not for others. For me, it also doesn't work.

You are a FORKING LEGEND!

Seriously thanks for the Tip!

Doesnt work for me...

(1 edit)

Thanks, it worked with Chrome/Windows but not Firefox/Windows (although I’m using Firefox right now) for some reason.

And I actually can open multiple dev tools windows so I just repeat the procedure for every tab that needs it. I don’t know how to make this the default setup for every new tab though.

EDIT: you’ll have to log in again to itch though

Finally!! very helpful thanks for your researches ! Does the job perfectly

This one works, thank you!

Hello. Thx for this temporary solution

Trying to make this fix work, but even after disabling the browser default and setting it to chrome, reloading the page does nothing.

Am I missing something?

Nevermind, got it to work with the opera -windows browser

(+1)

Been having this issue as well. Glad to see other people finally talking about this as well

Same problem with the human verification on the app.

itch.io is also broken with this problem in Lutris.

I'm experience the same issue, but only when using  certain ISP.

(+1)

Same, can't login from Lutris

(+1)

even if you certify being human, it asks you again and again

(+1)

still broken.

(+1)

got the same issue for about half a week now on the app

(+1)

Still does it

(2 edits) (+2)

Can’t get it to work, asking me if I’m a bot again and again and again…

EDIT: Linux (Bazzite) and Windows 11 doesn’t work… “Explore” inside itchio-App is completely broken and not usable at the Moment.

EDIT 2: Can’t even send Reports, neither on Win11 nor Linux…

(1 edit) (+2)

Same here (Linux). The workaround by changing the User-Agent over the devtools works partly, as in not every part of the app. Also it's annoying as you always have to keep open the devtools and do it again on each restart. Should be fixed asap please.

Same here.

(1 edit)

Has anyone a fix for th problem

(+1)

Installing a game (bottom of a game's page) seems also weird. It takes nearly a minute or longer to "calculate" which version is should install or its size etc.

I'm having the same issue (Win 11). It's frustrating to see that this has not been fixed yet, even though people have been reporting this for two months.  What's going on at itch.io?

Maybe it’s some sort of Blocking from certain Providers or Country?

Germany, Telekom. App is, like, non-functional atm.

Tried it out with a VPN as i am also from Germany and seems like it worked. Went to USA for example and after reloading i dont get the captcha error again.  Seems like some places might be blocked now.
Windows 11, VPN: Malwarebytes

same here

(+1)

Bump. Still absolutely not understandable why nothing has been done yet. Check the Cloudflare settings or just completely ditch it and use another service for it, ffs.

I mean, not nothing -- it has been fixed for many people. Just not for everyone apparently.

yeah me too I thought making another account would fix but nope

Still same here as well smh

It's not working for me either. I sent an email to the itch support ten days ago, but I haven't received a response yet.

Same here

True. I even uninstalled and installed it again

Same. Using Bazzite, the Lutris App, and when I try to configure itch.io as a Source, I get the human verification loop. I can log in to itch.io on all browsers just fine.

(+1)

Still broken on latest version on Arch Linux, deleting cookies and cache does not do anyhting. Stuck on the "Verify you are human by completing the action below." page. Problem doesn't occur on browser at all.

Valve Itch pls fix

(+3)

I opened a support ticket over itch's support mail address about almost a month ago, and still no reply. I start to wonder if itch is even still alive?

I can suggest to also write to the support and open a ticket to hopefully escalate that issue. Something seriously has to be done asap, as itch is basically almost useless right now. No sane person downloads and updates the games manually!

(+2)

I'm also inching closer to my ticket having been open for about a month without having received a response. I even rquested an update under that ticket, but nothing.

The issue has been going on for several months now and itch are not acknowledging it and people who are reaching out and asking for support are met with silence. That is no way to treat customers. I find this unaccaptable.

I agree that more people should open support tickets and escalate the issue.

i Have the Problem too... permanently

(+1)

Seems like the issue still isn't fixed. I'm *guessing* the wrapper the itch app uses for whatever browser engine might be incompatible with Cloudflare's captcha system, but like I said, just a guess. It works fine on normal browsers, be it Chromium, Gekko, or WebKit. It's just annoying that my games don't auto-update anymore and I have to download everything manually.

Had the same issue. As some already mentioned:

  • use a VPN in US and it will work!

Got the same Problem i hate it

(+4)

Just stumbled on this:

https://github.com/itchio/itch/issues/3369

(+1)

Little janky having to do my own bug-fixing but it worked for me

(+1)

Thank you for sharing. This workaround fixed it for me too. Seems like we really have to help ourselves since evidently, itch won't.

Hello, had this issue. My default browser is firefox on Windows. Could not log in on the Windows app until I logged in on the browser. Once I was logged in on the browser, the windows app let me log in without any issues.

I am also using Windows and Firefox as my default browser. Logging in on the browser did not change the behavior of the app on my end.

I found a random fix for me. idk if it will work for you guys but all I did was log out of the actual site, changed my password to the same password, and then signed back into the site and it auto logged me into the app without captcha.

It didn't auto log me in, but resetting the password does appear to have worked for me on Linux Mint

Seems fixed

(+1)

No, not for me. But it probably doesn't matter what we write here as there is no official feedback.

no progress here?

(1 edit) (+1)

Keep writing the support with that problem, see "contact us" in the footer, there will be info about the support mail address (support@itch...) to open a ticket. As more people write, we can hope that this will get escalated.

(+1)

There's a new version of the desktop app (26.6.0) that should hopefully fix the issue. At least it did for me.

https://github.com/itchio/itch/releases/tag/v26.6.0

Do you know why auto-updating to this version doesn't seem to work? I can see that an update is available in the app, but it fails every time.

(+3)

Interesting. Had the same problem, but thought this might be something only affecting me.

I resolved this by going into "C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\itch" and starting "itch-setup.exe" there manually.

See the change date of the file, it should be the date when you tried to auto-update. So, this should already be a new installer. Start it, go through the installation process and the desktop app should launch then. Also, the installer should have deleted the previous version in the directory afterwards.

In the app, you can verify at the bottom of the settings menu that you've got the new version now. It should say: "itch @ 26.6.0".

That fixed it. What seems to have happened is that the old version somehow didn't get deleted when the new version was installed, and running the installer manually actually did that check and deleted it.

it auto-updated for me today and now it’s fixed
