Don't think I have seen a rhythm tower defense game, nice work blending two genre's into a elegant fun game.

As someone who sucks at music/beats I was pleasantly surprised I made it past level 20 (first try I got zero because I had no idea what I was doing...)

I like how the beats start simple, but have to admit once they shift from the original patterns I had to just focus on two - could see have a multi/co-op experience would be a lot of fun.

How draw back is I am watching the beats so much I completely miss what is going on in the streets and it starts feeling a little old need some way of changing things up - maybe make the waves into songs so each one feels different.

Thanks for submitting was a lot of fun.

Developer

Glad you enjoyed our game and thanks a lot for your comment!

We wanted to find a way of showing the patterns on the "battlefield", but didn't get past the lights on the towers. For sure we'll find a solution for this if we continue this project.

Wow is this game good! Will revisist once it's a little bit more quiet for me. I love that the game keeps me pondering about good strategies here.

For my taste the background/buildings could be a little bit... less. There is so much going on in the game it was difficult to focus on the first playthrough.

In total absolute stellar submission and winner candidate

Developer

Thanks a lot for your nice comment!

Indeed, the buildings makes it a bit difficult to spot the towers, and we started updating the game for a post jam release. Just making the background a bit darker and adding lights to the streets makes it a lot easier to see what happens.

What an original idea! I didn't expect a rhythm game with the theme "critters"! It was fun to play, although at first I didn't know what to do (so I ended up placing the towers quite randomly). The game has a lot of personality and the UI art is really cool. Congratulations to each one of the development team!

Developer

Thanks for the comment. That one of the first idea we got with critters :)

Cool game! I like the idea of combining rhythm and tower defense, the different towers having different rhythm requirements also add a good challenge to balancing your attention between them. Well done!

Developer

Thanks for the review and for playing !

Fantastic stuff! The towers overpower the music a bit when you get to place a lot of them, but this is a banger of a unique entry!

Thanks a lot for your comment, glad you enjoyed our game!

Ended up with a bit of jank layout, but once I got situated, I had a blast laying the block rocking beats!

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot for your comment, glad you had fun with our game!

Super fun and very high quality! A tutorial would've been helpful especially at the beginning since I didn't know where the enemies would come from it was hard to strategize where to put my towers. But overall great game! The overall design is awesome

Developer

Glad you enjoyed our game, thanks a lot for your comment!

And yeah, if we continue this game, we will definitely add some kind of tutorial and maybe "open" the spawn points one by one.

Excellent concept! I enjoyed it. What I mind a lot is that the game lacks a good tutorial. It took me way too long to understand that I had to press Ctrl/Space/Shift when the turntable is currently active. Once I understood this, the game became brilliant! I really wouldn't expect such an excellent rhythm game in a game jam. By the way, I ended up #2 on the leaderboard without even expecting it. During the game, it didn't feel like I was so good...

Developer

Glad you liked our game and thanks a lot for your comment.

Sure we'll add a tutorial if this becomes a "real" game. :)

And congrats for being number 2. The leaderboard is also available here: https://games.cularogames.com/leaderboards/ktb001

This was an interesting take on a tower defense game.  The music worked really well for getting into the rhythm.  I'm glad you included the Z/X/C as an alternative to Control / Spacebar / Shift, because I found it much easier to work with.  The background was a little busy, which made it difficult at times to see the blue tower or focus on the enemy movement.

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot for testing our game and for your comment. :)

We already updated the background colors for a post jam release so towers are easier to spot.

The main menu started strong and then the game gets even stronger. I didn't even notice the turrets being designed around rhythm/QTE for a minute or two! Really cool idea which I wasn't terribly good at but I got to wave 12 at least!

Developer

Glad you liked our game. Thanks for your comment.

Look, you're in the top 10! 😊

Oh cool, I'll take top 10 haha!

Submitted(+2)

Damn, this is sick. I'm terrible at it! But the music does such a great job of making you feel like you're doing way better than you actually are.

Incredibly solid entry, well done to everyone.

Glad you liked our game, thanks a lot for your comment!

This is such a cool game! It took me a minute to get the hang of managing all three towers at once but I felt like a god when I was able to do it.

Developer

You must be god then because i was never able to manage it haha! Great to hear you enjoyed the concept!

Submitted(+3)

What a cool game concept! As a fan of TD and rhythm games, I think it was awesome that you combined the genres. Even though I wasn't very good at it, I still had lots of fun trying. I was a bit overwhelmed by having all three tower types at the very beginning. It would have been nice to just have the yellow tower for wave 1, then add a new one during the subsequent waves. Also adding a latency calibration would have been great. But as an artist, I have no idea how difficult that is to do, and fully understand that it's not available in jam game. Overall though, I really enjoyed your entry.

Developer (1 edit) (+2)

Thanks a lot for your comment, and glad you had fun with our game.

Indeed introducing the turntables one by one is a good idea, and we will definitely investigate latency calibration (and making the yellow turntable easier) since lots of comments mention this problem.

Developer(+1)

Hey thanks for your comment, the idea came about during the wrap up but we ran out of time, if this was a commercial project i invisioned the mechanics would have been introduced the same way you described them! Thanks for the comment.

Super cool idea and well executed. During gameplay I didn't bother with blue towers (I usually find mashing boring, and I understand it was made for the wildcard), instead, I focused on the beat and red hold notes. Got pretty far with my strat and I had fun during my run. The amount of assets, code and polish put into it is very apparent, great work!

Developer(+1)

Hey thanks for the feedback, there was some work planned to change the blue from quick mashing to something else but we ran out of time. Thanks for playing though and for the awesome comment!

Enjoyed the music and environment design. I'm terrible when it comes to rhythm games, however, and couldn't really keep track of the towers I placed versus the three different rhythms I needed to control with them, so was slaughtered in the first wave. For UX, it's probably a good idea to start off with an easy level (IE: only one rhythm) to onboard the player. Otherwise, I feel Keep the Beat is a cool concept to innovate on the tower defense genre with a stylish aesthetic and sound.

Developer

Thanks for this detailed comment, that's lovely.

We had different comments on difficulty (both too hard or too easy) but we will surely add some level variety and a tuto to help new players !

Cool idea!  I liked the graphics and sound design, especially the booing when I lost lol.  I did find it very difficult!

Developer

Booooooh ;)
Thanks for playing and commenting !

Ok, just to get this out of the way, I really love tower defense games, and I really sucked at this one. Running the windows native version, so no excuses. I'm just garbage at keeping a beat. That being said, this is still one of my top games so far.

As others have said, the mechanic of timing the button presses to the patterns, while engaging (and beyond me, apparently) does pull your eyes away from the action. Playing on a large display makes that even worse. I would love to see this explored more. The towers already provide some feedback, so perhaps that could evolve to help draw the player's focus back up into the action, or maybe the buildings along the path also animate in some way to help communicate the patterns.

This concept needs strong audio, which it has all day. The graphics are great. Honestly, it felt more like I was playing a demo for an upcoming release than a game jam submission. Amazing work.

Developer

Damn thanks for the detailed comment !
We will take all these remarks and try to make smth even better from it !

Developer

Hey thanks for the great comment! It was a concern to me as well to have the eyes staying down there, i would love to explore more solutions to keep the eyes up on the action. One of which was to make the tower blink when its time to hit the beat.

Submitted(+2)

Love the animations and polish! The concept is great too, combining tower defence with a rhythm game. I think the towers definitely need a bit of tuning, since at one point I was able to just not interact with the rhythm mechanics, and the bugs would just die anyway. But other than that, it was pretty fun, nice entry!

Developer

Thanks for playing and commenting !
Balancing is of the next stuff we plan to do on this game if we keep working on it ;)

Submitted(+2)

Nice game! I enjoyed playing it!

Just one thing, maybe the map is a bit too clumsly  (for my taste!) but overall a really nice work!

Submitted(+2)

Very cool game! Combining rhythm game elements with those of a tower defense game is such a cool idea, and its executed quite well here! Graphics and audio are both really strong, too.

Just a couple of nitpicks: I think there might be something off with the space bar turntable because I had to press the space bar about a sixteenth note after the beat for it to be timed properly. The audio balance was good overall, but I noticed that the sound effects could get pretty loud when they stacked on top of each other, which made the music a bit harder to hear.

Besides that, really great job with this!

Developer

Hey ! Thanks for playing and making such a good score ;)

We take note of all of that, there is obivously some stuff to improve on both audio and gameplay side !
