Compared to other games in the jam I've played that have a die that controls many aspects of the game, this one seems implemented pretty well. None of the things it influences can make or ruin your experience, it just makes you change your strategy. The idea of also linking that to a time limit was clever. Also being able to see while in a battle whether the die has changed and prevented you from getting in the door you were headed to is a nice way of adding a little extra pressure to battles.

As a music guy myself, I enjoy that the exploration music and the battle music both use the same leitmotif to tie them together. Overall, the music and graphics are quite appealing and definitely make the game more enjoyable.

My only real complaint is that overworld navigation is a bit of a chore. It has the problem shared by many top-down navigation games that it's very finicky to fit into one-tile wide gaps. The spikes on the overworld are also more annoying than they should be due to the same problem. Altogether, despite its bugs, I quite enjoyed your game. Great work!

Thanks for the feedback! The post-jam build (which is pretty much ready and just waiting for release now) has smaller spike hitboxes since a lot of people have commented on that :)

Nice entry, it reminded me a lot of Undertale during fights!

What I liked?

- The concept of a dice which controls almost everything (door and fights)

- The pixel art is really great, the presentation of the fights is well made

Other comments:

- I noticed that if the dice roll while we are in front of a door, and the number is the right one for this door -> it won't open, I needed to move away and going back to it in order to open it

Overall nice job!

The art, mechanics, and presentation were all really awesome. Nice game!

Music was lovely.  I enjoyed the art and the battles.  I was a little confused on how the die rolled on the over world.  I liked that in battle it gave you a special attack depending on the roll.
I thought it was interesting that when you died the app closed, it was an actual game over.

I think I understood the battle mechanic quick enough, made sense you want to get close to the end without missing.  I did still die a lot though.  Unlocking the door with the die was very unique but I felt it was limiting as I would look for a door and then by the time I got to the door the die would have changed.  I thought it changed when I pressed Z or X but it wasn't consistent.

A very enjoyable experience!

Developer

Thanks for playing! The die rolls every 30 seconds, but I guess that wasn’t clear.

I love the enemy sprite work! Mentioned bugs aside, the game is very well put together for a 48 hour jam entry. A surprising amount of polish, too! If I could offer some feedback, it might be good to lock movement to the tiles to make it easier to navigate tight corridors filled with spikes. Overall, good work!

Really cool. I really like the music, and the gameplay is also amazing. Great job!

Love the gameplay reminds me of pokemon :D nice and polished :)

holy crap your game is polished. UI is very consistent, I love the pixel art (i also like how the player is just a crown), and the fighting scenes are really nice, too. Good job :D.

Developer

Thanks!

nice earthbound ref

Very interesting take on the theme! Might be a tiny bit confusing at the beginning. Also the game has a very nice sense of exploration and the top-down zelda-like perspective fits it pretty well.

It's a shame that teleporter doesn't work, but hey, you made a unique game from scratch in 48 hours, and that is already a great achievement!

Enjoyed this a lot, and good job on releasing your game :)

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks a lot!

The teleporter is supposed to head to the second half of the game, another floor with different enemies and a final boss (all this was actually finished during the jam, but unfortunately can't be accessed right now - it can be accessed with modding tools if you're so inclined, even).

I'll be uploading a bugfixed and improved build after the ratings end, so if you're interested in finishing the game properly feel free to give it a try then!

Cute art and not too annoying music, unlike most. Would have needed a little explanation that the closer you got to end miss section, the more damage was dealth. I'm sure with some extra time the game would have shinned. Great Game!

Awesome! I like the music

The music and art style are awesome! The idea is interesting too, but I feel the enemies do to much damage as you don't regenerate nearly enough mana or hp to compensate, also going through the gaps was really hard sometimes I would bump into the gap 5 times before making it. Other than that great game! And it's impressive that you managed to make an rpg with dialogue in a two day jam!

The art and music was super good for this kind of game, you really nailed the aesthetic. The little spiky guys were kind of annoying but the battle system was interesting. I was done in by a sword before I made it to the end, but it was a fun run!

Game was fun to play but it was definitely hard at the beginning. I did manage to get to open the door with the key but the game didnt do anything when i went through the teleporter. I love the way dice rolls make each run different but it would be nice if you had a way to reroll the dice or gave a timer to see how much time until the roll happened. Most of the time I just stood in a room waiting for a roll. Overall, it was fun!

Developer

the teleporter is broken in this build it turns out, really sorry it didn't work! I'll be releasing a bugfixed build after the ratings that makes it work properly.

glad you liked the game! :)

Really fun game! I'm always impressed to see a well designed RPG game in a jam, they take a lot of work and you excelled at this one. The combat is fair and challenging. The world is fun to explore too.

I did find a few bugs, I'm not going to count those against you as you only had a weekend! The f4 for full screen didn't work and when using the healing spell it would only heal me to 27/35 hp while saying I was at max.

Overall great game!

Developer(+1)

Yeah, I caught the healing bug too - the heal to max line was from an older version and I forgot to replace it with saying the correct amount. Glad you liked the game!

Game looks good and plays well, I have a few complaints though, well, technically one that applies to everything. The game's too hard! The enemy's attacks are too strong and some rooms seem like they haven't been playtested, they are awfully hard to go through without taking damage! I like the idea i just wish the game was easier.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback! We unfortunately didn't have time for balancing; I agree the game is definitely too hard as it is.

Earthbound but dice?!

Probably one of my favorites to play! Timing attacks is quite tough but it adds alot to the otherwise stale gameplay of RPGs. I havent really noticed a use on the dice in the battles though, but perhaps that something that can be expanded upon. The battles could also use some pow like screenshake to really make them pop alot more

Despite that, the key in the starting room is a little confusing, and i wish the pips on the doors that you can enter were more visible as i didnt notice them for a few minutes. Maybe they glow a little bit when you can go through them

Otherwise, great game! Now make an Undertale sized universe to it and port it to Gameboy Color and we have ourselves THE game ever

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot!

The ability you have in battle (shock, confuse, paralyse, e.t.c.) varies based on the die's number, but maybe it should have been made a little clearer that was what was happening.

Submitted(+2)

This game is very good! The art and music are very nice, and I like the concept. I think it was a little hard though, or maybe I'm just bad.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! If you’re having trouble with battles, try looking around the castle for power-ups - little green plus signs. They’ll increase your HP, MP, and attack.

Glad you enjoyed!

Developer

UPDATE: I've figured out a way to avoid crashes - just try not to skip dialogue, and you should be fine.
