How does your game fit the theme?
I wanted to explore the idea of an out of control wildfire. In addition, the confusing inputs were intended to limit the player's control of the situation, just like how a real fire is hard to manage.

Did your team create the art for this game during the 48 hour time slot?

Yes

Did your team create the audio for this game during the 48 hour time slot?

Wow, did not expect that when looking at the screenshots (I directly thought of Dwarves fortress ahah). The audio is awesome and it's a very good idea, for me it totally fits the theme. I agree with the others about the control, but it's a detail. You made a really nice job  (alone!) you can be proud. Keep creating games!

The audio here is fantastic. The guitar is very peaceful and calming, which contrasts really well with the fact that everything is literally on fire. It's basically a pixel art version of the "this is fine" meme -- complete with burning animals.

The controls, as several have mentioned, are a bit clunky. They obviously also cause some of the issues you've mentioned on the game's main page, like scenario 2. The concept is definitely there, though. It certainly fits the theme, as you described it; managing a team of firefighters in an actual emergency is not supposed to be easy and go well. I'm sure with just a bit more time, you can bring the control scheme from overly punishing to pleasantly challenging.

I'm really pleased to see the options to pause or turn off the scanlines for people that might find that difficult to deal with. It's a nice touch and probably will earn you brownie points from GMTK who always advise for adding accessibility options when able.

Also, bird screeches on point. I can really appreciate kitschy voice acting!

Developer(+1)

thank you! you're the first person to mention being able to turn the scanlines off lol, i'm glad you appreciated it. it's not the most intense effect, but i did want to make sure everything was comfortable for folks with photosensitivity or who just didn't like the look of it haha

and yes. kitsch va gang rise up

I really love the color palette, the guitar and the sounds! Nice idea and backstory (as I read in the itch.io page). Too bad its not mouse-controlled! But great ideas great ideas!

I really enjoyed the aesthetic of the game. It is very charming. I also really like the main theme. I was expecting something more chaotic, but ironically the current song just works way better!

All in all, I really want to see a more fleshed out version of this game. A couple of bug fixes here, and some quality of life improvements there, and you might have a great game in your hands!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Don't worry, a post jam version is already in the works!

Well, even after finding that you can control the firefighter with the spacebar, and even after reading in the game description what i have to do, i still didn't unterstand what i have to do (or, to be more precise HOW to do it, because what to do it is somewhat deductuble)

PS. Yes, i know that i can only spread water to the right (btw this makes some tree straight up unsalvageable), but, for some reason, it still dosen't work, but i think the problem in this case isn't really the "empty bucket" rather than the "fill bucket" (also, some feedback if a firefighter have water would be REALLY nice)

Idk, maybe i'm just dumb, or something...

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I know the current control scheme is kind of a mess. I ran out of time to iron out the kinks/add all the features i wanted, and I want to release an update where you can spread water in all 4 directions.

If a firefighter has water, they should switch to a sprite where the buckets have a little blue at the top of them to signal that they're full, but given how tiny the sprites are that's definitely easy to miss

I really loved all the atmosphere of the game, everything matches, the graphs, gameplay, sound.

Really liked it, great job

I liked this game's style - the chill guitar going alongside the sound of fire was oddly and hilariously relaxing. :P The controls are certainly unusual, but I think it matches well with both the theme and the kind of retro-ish aesthetic. And I can appreciate someone that can do tiny art in a readable way, so nice work!

Also, here's a bad fan art for you:

beautiful. i love it dearly

Out of all keys you could forget to list on the instructions you managed to forget the action key "space bar" lol. (Yes, I'm repeating what I told you on Discord cuz its relevant). Also I felt the game is weirdly 'relaxing', maybe because the music is good and the pace is slow. Good job, man!

Developer(+1)

thank you! i'm glad that there's a relaxing element to it, a lot of the games i've been playing feel really hectic (which isn't bad!) so it's nice that this one offers something to make it stand out :) thanks for playing!

Really cool concept! Took a bit of figuring out, but can guarantee- the fires know who the boss is lol

Submitted(+1)

Very old school style, it's fun to see design where the game scene graphics are only a small window in the full UI.  If management sims are your bag, I highly recommend checking this out.

It took me way too long to know how to play xD. Interesting idea to control an out of control fire. Nice.

Submitted(+1)

The art looks really good, although it took me a while to realise how to play the game!

Submitted(+1)

I'm huge fan of the retro graphics! But the command system unintuitive and feels like I'm jumping through hoops to perform simple actions. I like the idea of trying to control a forest fire though.

Developer(+1)

thank you! yeah, i wanted to explore the "out of control" feeling from a couple different angles, including a complicated dwarf-fortress-esque control style, but as it turns out most people don't find unintuitive controls fun. who knew, lol! the next game i make will be much easier to pick up and play

Visual presentation is great, everything else though, no quite so. It feels 80% done, with the other 20% requiring polish in control scheme. It uses arrow keys, with space bar to activate a firefighter. You also use the number keys to select actions. I have a hard time trying to figure out how I'm suppose to play. Like, I get how to interact, but how I approach the game I'm unsure of. I beat a few levels though! Overall, it's okay.

Also, please turn  up your audio levels to -6 dbs please. I can't hear anything unless I blast my speakers :c

Developer(+1)

thank you for your feedback! i'll make sure to turn the volume up when we can upload updates, after the review period is over

I echo ocdshiro's comment, I was going to say the visuals are nice but I don't know how to play (if you do play, or if you just watch the scenarios play out). If you're watching them play out, I might suggest things move more frequently so that more happens? Looks nice though and seems like it could be fun!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

hi, thank you for the review! sorry, i didn't have time to write in a proper tutorial/command list, i guess i hoped the weird controls would be part of the "out of control" thing and drive experimenting but that was a bit of laziness lol.
the idea is to watch the scenarios play out / try to put out the fire without any animals or firefighters dying (and some animals will kill each other). sorry for the confusion, i'll put these instructions in the description so hopefully it's more clear. thank you for the compliment on the visuals!

edit: here are the instructions i just put in the description:

CONTROLS:

When in a scenario: USE THE ARROW KEYS TO CONTROL THE CURSOR. If the cursor is over a creature, HIT SPACE TO ACTIVATE IT.

If activating a FIREFIGHTER, there's a list of commands that put the firefighter into a different state.

STATE 1: GET WATER: the firefighter will have empty buckets. Maneuver them (with arrow keys) to a puddle to GATHER THE WATER UP. Afterwords, the firefighter will start wandering again but with a FLAG in the code turned on that they have water.

STATE 2: BREAK BLOCK: the firefighter will DESTROY ANY ROCKS they come into contact with. Animals sometimes hide under rocks, though!

STATE 3: EMPTY BUCKETS: if the WATER FLAG from state 1 is turned ON, this state will allow the firefighter to dump the water out. If you hit SPACE, they'll dump the water out one space to the firefighter's right. Maneuver them next to a fire to put it out.

I hope you'll give the game another shot!

Ok! I tried it again and it still took me a while to figure out controls (felt like a lot of key presses without good intuition of how to do things) but after several minutes I got it working fairly well. The music is very nice and relaxing and the sound effects are great too.  Game idea was cool and various screens implemented are nice to see (level complete, grade, etc). It still lost points for fun because of the seemingly high number of control inputs and I could only figure out how to place water to the tile right of me, which is kind of annoying. I changed my rating though, scoring things higher than before thanks to your explanation of controls. : ) Hope you had fun making it!

Developer (2 edits) (+1)

Thank you! yeah, I was inspired by games like dwarf fortress which have a million keypresses, and in retrospect I should have streamlined things down. Also, you can only place the water to the right, I ran out of time to implement 4 directions (hopefully that's something I'll be able to put in with an update)

Thanks for giving it another shot! I really appreciate it!

I love the visuals and the idea for the game. The problem was that I couldn't understand how to play it, mayby if you work a bit more in the usability you would have a great game.

Developer (2 edits)

thank you for reviewing! i'm glad you liked the visuals and the idea. sorry about it being so confusing, I was scrambling to get the game done enough to submit and forgot to add a tutorial like a dummy lol.

edit: here are the instructions i just put in the description:

If you have the opportunity, please give the game another go!
