We both got the coolest idea! Great job!

Cool take on the theme, It's movements are really well designed, since I didn't have a problem realizing how each pieces would move. You should add some AI ! Great job!

This is an interesting interpretation of chess and quite intuitive (the figures behave as you would expect.. strangely :D). And it works surprisingly well.

Well done!

Man, if this had at least a basic AI (even just an AI that takes when it can, otherwise moves randomly) and a checkmate system, it would be perfect!

Now I'm tempted to make my own version with an AI and HD graphics. ;P

Pretty minimal in presentation; no frills for sure, but still a fairly well-considered translation of chess into 1 dimension. Could have stood to have a state recognizing win conditions, rather than just continuing "play."

Despite my misgivings, there's a strong theoretical foundation here and I've got a good bit of respect for what it manages to do on a design level. A little more polish and user friendliness and this could be an excellent game to play with my friends over lunch. Heck, give this a UI and make it for mobile and you could easily sell this almost otherwise unmodified.

EDIT: a itch bug made me post this comment three times. Sorry! Cleaned it up.

I'd really like to play this one, it looks interesting. But I downloaded the .zip, unzipped it and when I try to run the EXE nothing happens. :(

Developer

I'm sorry to hear that. Can you tell me what platform you're on? The exe is for Windows 64-bit so unfortunately it won't work on a 32-bit OS. For now you can go to http://love2d.org/ and download LÖVE and use that to run the ".love" file for this game (also available on the download page).

I am on Windows 10, 64 Bit.

Developer

Did you try using the LÖVE version

Submitted

Not yet.

Developer

To be clear, when you say "nothing happens" you mean like no window shows up or anything?

Submitted

No window shows up, nothing. As if I didn't click it. (the version with LÖVE downloaded worked though)

Developer

Glad to hear it. I'll add a note to the game's description page.

Very neat idea. I can see myself developing strategies on the optimal first moves and strategies if I played the game 5 times against someone. Good Work!

(On a sidenote; this kinda reminds me of "The Royal Game of Ur")

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you appreciate it! You know, it's funny you should mention the Royal Game of Ur, as I have another game which is very much inspired by that game, but I've only implemented it in Tabletop Simulator. Perhaps I should host the files on itch

Submitted(+1)

With some polist that would be rad! Though I'd have to find someone to play it with me lol. Tabletop games are very pure in the sense that all the focus is on gameplay mechanics.

That's a very interesting idea, I like it a lot! Some UI telegraphing would come in handy (like when you choose a pawn, showing where it can walk before you walk) to plan ahead better. Other than that, it has a very cool nostalgic look that creates an interesting mood to the game. Good job!

Developer

I had planned to add a feature to show where a piece can move when you're holding it, but the way I coded the movement ended up not being particularly conducive to that. I didn't end up having enough time to work it out.

At first I thought it was completely hopeless to win the game, but if you do not move pawns to the middle, it is possible to take over all of the opponent's pieces with a knight, so in the end only two knights are left. If added a winning screen when the king is threatened, and a draw when the two pawns are right next to each other, the game could be replayable many times!

cool interpretation of chess moves. they actually make a lot of sense in your version :D

An interesting use of theme which seems to work fairly well.
