nice but idk why you would be happy as being sad destroys everything which allows progress while being happy is pointless (maybe thats the message but idk)

Developer(+1)

I'm a depressed introvert and I don't want to bum other people out when I'm feeling low. Smiling through things drains me but saves those around me from myself. I'm trying to gamify that.

The colour palette pulled me in, the sadness engulfed me.

Great mechanic, wanted to play this when first watching the snippet on Xanderwoods channel. Great work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you. BubbleGum16 is one of my favorite palettes. The engine distorts it a bit but the colors still work together.

I like it, very creative ability :)

Developer

Thank you.

Really nice artwork combined with an ability I have never seen before. Well done!

Developer

Thank you!

It had bugs and I would add walking animations but still good job.

Developer

Thank you.

This game is by far I think the deepest of any I’ve seen yet, not mechanically but emotionally. I think if you were to make this into a couple levels with a small wordless story, you could make people cry real tears. I think it’s a great ability and a fantastic concept, and I think you could make a really powerful game that could help people if done right. No pressure or anything 😅👌

Developer

Thank you. Ha, well that's a lot of pressure. I'm going to have to give this a lot of thought.

Nice mechanic and you balanced it nicely by giving energy bar. It could make a good top-down survival / puzzle combo gameplay.

Developer(+1)

Thank you. I've been spinning my little brain trying to imagine the implications of this mechanic and I keep going to those two genres, which seems natural.

Submitted(+1)

Ohhh this is really interesting. I like the spin on "not doing the thing" rather than doing it and can definitely lead to some interesting puzzles. Nice one!

Developer

It's a little spin that I'm happy with. I've been on a little kick thinking about making games without the primary mechanic being killing and ended up with pretty much the same thing but the opposite. Thank you.

Nice art and a very interesting gameplay. I'm very excited to see how will you continue this game

Developer(+1)

Thank you. If I make to round 2 and the task is related in some way, then I'll try to hook it in. Otherwise I'm still interested in seeing if I can make this into a fun game.

You game description cracked me up. I want to say I did my best to avoid bumming people out on the way to my bedroom, but on my first run I just wanted to destroy everyone to see if there would be a different outcome. It was fun and my guess is you'll have different end-states and scores in a bigger build (if that's part of a later challenge), but for a short prototype I enjoyed it.

I thought your art was nice and the color palette was a perfect choice to match sadness. My small critique is I think you could have used your character art and done some small changes and color swaps to be the NPCs instead of big yellow smiley faces ... I like that the smiley faces are a quick read and easy to understand how they're feeling, but they felt a little out of place with the other art.

Overall, great work.

Developer(+1)

Thank you. I think it's good to test the world, it's what I tend to do with most games.

Good critique, I chose to use icons instead of characters to save time, but like you said, I could have also saved time repurposing the main character with a few minor changes. I agree that that would have been better. Good lessons for me to learn, thank you.

Interesting mechanic, and nice artwork!

Developer

Thank you.

I dig the concept, though like the others said it's not clear how this would play out in a proper level.
But I am sure you will figure it out, looking forward to it! :)

Developer

Thank you. Yeah, I'm not used to designing a game like this, I tend to over plan as opposed to creating a character with an ability and some time later thinking about other aspects of design. I think the idea has potential to both be pretty good and unique or pretty bad and terrible depending on the direction I choose.

Cool metaphor of depression, but what exactly are the consequences to *not* smiling? The terrain turned weird colours... and that was it. If you don't give the player any incentive to do something, they most likely won't. In this case, it's enough to just slowly walk to the bedroom.

Developer

It's definitely something to keep in mind. The consequences for not smiling are that the things around them die and so the incentive is to avoid killing things at least not killing people and animals.

Submitted(+1)

I like the concept, but I am not sure how it will translate into the gameplay/design. The art is really good!

Developer

It will be just a basic flip of the norms, instead of using the ability to kill things, the goal will be to use the ability to avoid killing things.

This art is very beautiful, congratulations for the idea and execution of the project, I believe that at this level of pixel art, even if you draw a stickman figure it looks beautiful, congratulations.

Developer(+1)

Thank you. Pixel art is something I'm trying to improve.
