I assume the temporary darkness is just for this demo right? otherwise great idea, curious as to where you go with it

No the darkness is meant to be as you cant see without a head, after some time it grows back.

Cool! What's the point of the game? there are no levels.

There isn't any levels because the task 1 was to create a playable character with a unique ability.

I never would have thought blowing up my own head would be so much fun!

Neat game with an interesting concept and cute, yet gory animations. I dug my short time playing around with this proof of concept.

I can see a lot of options for level design based around losing sight after using the special ability, also a clever way to make sense in the game world that your head is gone, so of course your sight is gone.

Some small critiques. I would have collisions with the other character so the player doesn't just run through them, at the very least I'd have the player layer above the (I'm assuming he's an enemy) enemy layer. A big explosion effect around the player starting from the head would be cool too and could also give a visual cue to the player of how big the explosion hitbox is.

Love the audio track and added touches with the background. A small suggestion for something quick that will add a lot to the background is to desaturate those layers more. It will let the character layer pop more and the further an object is the more it takes on atmospheric haze, so it's less vibrant and less saturated. This guy is my favorite pixel artist teacher and he has a great blog about it here:

I've just downloaded the itch desktop this morning so now I can play on all of the downloadable games like this one. I really like how you got the head to blow up, especially with the little flash at the end and then with the temporary blindness, its a really great fun drawback to using the ability. Awesome work! The only suggestion I have to make it better is to shave a second or so off the temporary blindness

I really like the unique ability of not being able to see after exploding. However, like others have mentioned, it would have been nice to see some sort of visual cue or countdown.

The darkness bit was a bit disorientating at first. I thought the game had crashed or I had lost or something :P

But after I realised that it was part of the game I thought it was quite good.

One suggestion I would make is to have some UI that shows the player the game is still running even if you cant see anything. Like a head grow back timer or some text saying “Regrowth in progress” or something like that.

The ability is definitly unique, but for now I am not sure how well this would work in context with level and enemy design.
But that can probably be fixed with some tweaking and polish!

I do think this has potential, but honestly, there's simply not enough gameplay for me to evaluate whether this could actually work or not. Depends on how many enemies there are, how much they hurt you, the level design, etc... as a concept, I'd say it's pretty good.
