Wait, is that some sort or 3D sorcery transformed into pixels? That looks very good! Hm, but, my score was -71, because the boss killed me a few times. I think the fact that you lose score when dying is a bit "too much" :D

Very cool game :)

Developer

Sorcery indeed! I used low res renders from 3D models to build the sprites and animations. It's essentially the way old games like Donkey Kong Country and Abe's Odyssey made their graphics. It's a cheap way to get animations and it even was appropriate for the GameBoy as some games used the technique.

And yes, I wanted to ensure that the highest score was only achieved of the player never died. A better way would have been up reward them for a wave without deaths instead. It's noted and will be in the second release after the jam ends!

A very nice game, the gameplay is very pleasant and the music and graphic assets are quite good. Nice job, I had a lot of fun on this game ^^ (even if the music stays in the head :P)

A simple SHUMP game. The sprites / effects were absolutely beautiful. Sound was very nice as well. Really the only nit-pick that I have is that I felt like there was no feedback from damaging the boss. So while I was able to beat him, I spent a minute at first questioning whether or not I was actually doing any damage to it. Nevertheless I really enjoyed this game. To me though, it doesn't feel like GameBoy game, the quality of it feels much much higher. Don't get me wrong though, I'd be stoked if I was a kid and had this as a GB game! hahaha!

I would love to see this developed on, it was really nice.

Well done!

Thank you very much for the great feedback! The lack of damage feedback on the boss (and regular enemies too) was still on the to-do list when the time ran out. It's going to be in there for the 1.1 version, after the jam rating period is over.

What do you think, flashing when they take damage and a healthbar for the boss?

Also, if we overshot the quality of the GameBoy, we'll just take it as a compliment! XD
I remember being quite unsure about limiting the visual fidelity more to get a more authentic feel or to do everything the jam rules allowed for. It's a tough one, really. On the original GameBoy, even if it was nominally running at 60fps, had most games run quite a bit slower. And things like dynamic particle effects and accurate physics were really a no show. Instead everything would have been done with sprite sheets and a bit of in engine animations. Flexible Frosty is more on the original side of things in this regard (https://itch.io/jam/gbjam-8/rate/751190).

I totally understand. When there's an imposing time limit, somethings need to have higher priorities and such :p

I mean, that decision is ultimately up to you, especially depending on how you want your game to feel, I've seen both styles done with very good success. If I were to take a guess, I might go with having a flashing overlay on top of the boss sprite too, in lieu of a healthbar. That would give more than enough feedback for the player. One of the beautifies of SHUMPS is the tension that kind of builds during a scene. So like, for example: if a player is in a boss encounter who happens to have really erratic patterns, or launches a lot of projectiles, without a health bar, every hit of damage the player throws out leaves this looming feeling of "how much longer do I have to go?" . It forces them to have to remain on their guard instead of falling into a reactive lull.

That's how I see it / my two cents anyways! Hahaha!

Yeah, you have a good point. Heck, this whole jam taught me a lot about the original hardware of the GB. It really gave me a whole new appreciation for the things people have made on it, both officially and unofficially given its limitations!

nice concept but should have more settings options.

Noted and will be in the upcoming update! Thank you for your feedback!

Great try, though i think i needs to be have an option to confirgure controls, as i'm not a wasd player, but great job overall

Developer

You're not the only one, apparently. There will be more control options in the upcoming update! Thank you for your feedback!

superb graphics and sound. also great gameplay.

would have been more enjoyable for me to be able to use cursor keys, as WASD, shift, and space were all too cramped.

Developer(+1)

Noted! Ihad to take out the gamepad support sadly.  But, right of course. There really should have been a second layout in parallel.

It is playable with just one hand, though. That was the idea behind the layout.

Really nostalgic!

Absolute fire ! Really trying hard to beat the hard score. The people need leaderboards !

Very cool! Those effects are so smooth and buttery!
That music track was very cool too!

Submitted(+1)

Buff the spread shot, add some hit feedback to the boss and you'll have a perfect little shmup here. Great stuff, very smooth!

Developer

Yes! I'm with you on all those things.

Now that there's more time again I'll be looking into all those things for version 1.1...

Also, more enemies...

Great music and effects, i'm in love with the 3d sensation of the ship, i didn't understood why i ended my run with negative points or if the boss was getting damage but despite of that i'll recommend this game to a friend :0 it's a nice entry
