great! great! my only gripe is that the movement seems very restricted.

I wanted a star fox prequel for so long, I finally found it!

Great Game! Congratz!

I got a few feedbacks for improvement, but overall it's a hit!

Movement: perfectly done, with high quality to the perspective! I just think the stage border was a little unclear on the first level and could mislead the player to avoid obstacles to wrong side when the almost full screen obstacles apear. Really good care for the movement progression, teaching the up and down move after perfecting the side movement first.

Shooting: It wasn't very clear the effect of the missile instead of the normal laser beam. I think there was a big rock that required a missile shot in the second stage, but I'm not sure if it was just a normal rock in my face because of the perspective. For the final boss I got a little tired of clicking fire. Maybe in the end you could turn on auto-fire, but I'm glad you used both keydown and keyup to shot, otherwise it would really be painful.

Text: It was a bit janky because of the constant changing size and characters. Maybe using a darker color but keeping the same size would fix this issue. It is quite distracting

Sound: Great sound! But made me question how GB like it was.

Overall a really fun game to play! You all did a great job!

Yeah on the first level it cannot be clear enough sometimes how much you can push to the left/right to dodge stuff, but that is why the player hitbox was made smaller (you can even go through the tiny gaps of the obstacles as well!)

Second, the big rocks die instantly with a missile but drop even smaller ones (plus pickups!). Missiles can be a bit tricky to use because of how slow they can be and the final boss was a bit too much  for sure jajaja. I remember testing it before putting the final version and being even HARDER, thing is we wanted to leave a decent challenge for people that reached the end ^^

Third, yeah depending on your screen/resolution it could even be harder or easier to see stuff. Some of the text specially was impossible to make readable because of how far it is from the player (like the ones used in the final boss to indicate the weak points, good thing I did a decent design with a damn big arrow).

And lastly, the soundtrack is incredibly GB! It even runs on real hardware, search on twitter if you can @DonutShoes (or in the jam page). He did the music and it's an incredible talented chiptuner.

Thank you a lot for taking the time to do such a well written and explained review of our project. Have a nice day <3

Here's a video of Level 1's music, written and recorded using LSDJ which is a music making platform that runs on Game Boy. https://www.instagram.com/reel/CxmjocaMQR8/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

Wow! Great guys! You really pushed the hardware to the limit LOL, because the sounds were awesome and much better than my old experiences with GB ;)

Awesome gameplay, this is certainly a well put together game. the art is out of this world!

Developer

Thank you a lot, glad you liked my pixels and the amazing 3D Chaz did! I helped with some models but other than that it was all him

First stage is good, second is amazing, the boss battle was missing something. I think it would be nicer if it was a bit shorter but harder (more obstacles to dodge). I was also missing some kind of feedback. I had no clue if I'm hitting that guy or doing something wrong...

Music is fantastic!

I really enjoy the mix of 3D and 2D assets. You get the freedom of the third dimension while keeping the crispness of the 2D hand-pixeled art. They go together wonderfully. Music is great (I’m a fan of your work outside of jams, as well), I didn’t expect unique tracks for each level! The SFX are solid, as well, but I felt that there was some ambiance missing during the missions. I’d have loved a slightly more filled out soundscape. Gameplay is entertaining, and I enjoyed the throwbacks/homage to games of the 90s like Starfox and Metal Gear. Overall a seriously solid entry with a staggering amount of polish.

Wow, very polished all around.  The game looks and feels great. Very fun to play!  Great work.

Congrats on your submission!  This looks extremely polished.  The 3D reminded me of Starfox SNES not a Gameboy, but still it has a very retro feel to it.  Well done!

Really fun and very well made.  I couldn't beat the boss. I managed to break the two things next to him but never finished him off, I'm not good at dodging the lasers.

You really got the most out of gameboy! :))

Graphics and the music are amazing. I'm not really a fan of these shooters but maaan didn't expect to see something like this in a gameboy jam!

Great work!

This game looks amazing! The gameplay is so good! A little bit difficult but really awesome!
What's the name of the pixelation of 3d models called?

Developer (2 edits) (+4)

The pixelation is created by making the Camera render to a Texture, then down scaling it to the size of the Gameboy!

Other effects I did to make sure it looked like a Gameboy:

  • Capped frame rate to 24 fps
  • Capped frame rate of particle systems to 8 fps with custom script
  • Prevented soft shadows with a Shader that limits the color range of an object's lighting (unlit + clamped gradient of colors)
  • Shader that limits the colors of a Texture to 4 colors, and replacing those colors using a Palette texture

Hope that gives a good idea of what you can do to get these effects!

I was not expecting a completely different second level. Nice job!

"GOOD LUCK!"
The polish on this game is amazing!

Love the game! I've never plaid the original Starfox but the references are great, the sound, art and aesthetic of the game are amazing! I was already sold on this game based on the music score and pixel portraits alone though =D
