Nice theme usage!

It's an interesting concept of bug (in more than one meaning XD).

Developer(+1)

Thanks dude, yeah we did jam a lot of "bug" into this didn't we.
Even after "release" I'm finding quite a few mechanics of the game are bugging people.
Which in my eyes may be a positive thing...thematically at least. :p
Thanks for playing

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the appreciation, we tried hard to make something that 100% fits the theme in a creative way, like the different meanings of BUG you mentioned 😉

Submitted(+2)

even though it's quite hard to control that cricket, it's still quite relaxing - specially with this lofi wibe

Developer

Indeed, we don't all find that dat cricket lyf comes naturally to us. Glad you liked the vibes, it is pretty chill isn't it.

Developer

Hopefully the challenge of jumping and the calm music balance each other out! :D Thanks for trying the game!

Submitted(+2)

really interesting, and super hard to get those jumps just right (not saying it on a bad way tho!)
and the screen going out was a really fun bug haahh

Developer(+1)

Hey there, thanks for playing, glad you appreciated the black screen :p
Getting the jumps right is quite hard, but eventually you can get the hang of it.

Developer

Glad you liked that “intentional bug” :) practice makes perfect, thanks for playing our game!

Submitted(+2)

Lots of fun! I really loved the chill vibe while playing. It’s almost like a turn based platformer - I could see this game being fleshed out into something really neat! I’d say the game doesn’t need the black squares, or even the death mechanic for the water. It’s nice and chill and fun without them :)

Thanks for making this, and good luck!

Developer(+1)

Cheers dude, glad you enjoyed.
Maybe if we were to continue development, there could be a "chill mode" where you may freely vibe to lo-fe beats and hop around without death or darkness.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the good wishes and the feedback! The black squares, apart from being an intentional “bug” are also there to give the player some pressure to finish the game with less jumps, bef◼️re the scr◼️◼️n i◼️ cov◼️◼️◼️d.

Submitted(+2)

Soothing game, not much to see though, and bugs supposed to drink water. I am not sure what the end was, but I think I got to a red apple and it restarted.

Developer

Well, cheers for giving it a go.
Sorry you didn't find the game visually stimulating, I guess it's not everyone...the life of a cricket.
Bugs do indeed need water to survive, however crickets are very good at drowning, for example people who keep crickets should not actually put pools of water in their enclosures, instead it's better to leave them cotton balls soaked in water, otherwise they can and do drown in very shallow pools of water.
When you get to the end of the game, you should see a screen telling you, you completed it, and it also tells you how many jumps you took.
Unless you discovered a unique bug...in which case + points to you.

Developer

First DLC will be the lava level, for a change of scenery ;)

Developer

Hey, thanks for playing! In the game the bug drowns because they need air, sorry about that. If you got to the end please post how many jumps it took and we’ll mention your high score on the game page! 😉 And if you have any suggestions on what you’d like to see more of in the game then that’d be really helpful input for us.

Submitted(+2)

Interesting game; movement mechanic feel very bug like!

Developer

Thanks for playing
"bug like" Sounds like success to me!

Developer

We were aiming to make it as buggy as we could, thanks for playing!

(+2)

The concept of holding the keys longer to jump further was interesting!

Developer

Thanks for giving it a go

Developer

Thanks, the controls are like this to make it easily playable on mobile too. :)

Submitted(+2)

Nice chill music. The game was fun but jumping was harder to master :) Maybe requires a few tries till I can get used to it.

Developer

Thanks for playing! Since there is only one level at the moment we didn't want it to be too easy. But with a bit of practice, it can be quite satisfying and with even more practice you might even beat Thesryn's high score

Developer

Thanks, it takes a bit of practice to get the feel for it, glad you liked it!

Submitted(+2)

A simple yet challenging game. Jumping for a long distance feel satisfying. I fell into the water three times and had to restart from the beginning, lol. Would be nice if there are checkpoints. Overall its super fun, good job :D

Developer(+1)

Checkpoints were definitely something we considered since the water can be quite unforgiving. In future we may try to implement a different mechanic. For example, you can land on the surface of water but it limits the strengths of your jumps. Alternatively, we may opt to do multiple shorter levels that present new challenges. For now there is only a single level that requires a bit of practice to complete before the "dead pixels" get too overwhelming. But trust me, I know your pain. Even now I still end up in the water more often than not!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing, "super fun" awesome cheers dude.
Did you manage to get to the end eventually?

Submitted

Unfortunately I didn't, lol. I reached the surface twice or three times but fell into the water and had to restart, so eventually I gave up <;

Developer

Thanks for all the positive feedback and the ideas on checkpoints. If we have capacity to develop the game further after the jam we might include something like this if the game gets longer or gets more levels.

Submitted(+2)

Cool game! I enjoyed the relatively novel mechanics and chill vibe.

Developer

Many thanks! We figured chill music would be a good way to balance out the frustration of landing in the water

Submitted(+1)

LOL tell me about it - or falling at the last jump

Developer

Yup. Experienced that quite a bit while testing to make sure the finish line (berry) worked. That music is the only thing that got me through development!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Part of what lead the movement/controls to be this way was to make it playable also on mobile devices with touch screens. Thanks for the feedback and thanks for trying it out!

Submitted

Ahh I can totally see how this would work well on mobile/touch screen devices. Awesome!

Submitted(+2)

Thanks for the submission, that was hard to get over it. Lots of fun!!

It would have been great to add some visual bar to show the power of the jump.

Developer

:p Glad you had fun!
Everyone mentions the jump meter! Time constraints were an issue, but maybe we'll add a DLC :D
Did you get to the end?

Developer

Thanks for the feedback, the jump meter is on the top of our list of enhancements to add to the game and the most requested feature from these comments!

If you managed to finish, let us know how much jumps it took and we’ll feature your name with your high score on the game page. 😉

This is the only all-5-star game in GameOff 2021 I've played and I'm not even joking. First of all, I love the Lo-fi vibe for the music. Graphics I was thinking 4 star in the beginning because I really find the cricket leg creepy. Somehow it reminds me of human legs. But I have to gave a 5 star about the underground world you've constructed. Gameplay was great for me because there's a certain suspension kept me playing ___"what's the world like above?" And I also will check out your code to see how you made it land on those stones. Now "theme interpretation" is what makes your game my favorite so far. It's so straight-forward and the controls are so simple. I think you really made me experienced the hardship of a bug's life. I've played some really polished games but didn't rate because I simply don't think they were created for this GameOff. So great job and please make more!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! This comment vindicates the direction we pushed towards in this game. Really glad you appreciated it. I'm going to get the others to read this. Acros did the physical level design and all the art, and Sinisterstuf did all the programming in GO. (I was the guy in the background, being like, "no, do this! Stop concentrating on that!")
Anyway thanks again. I am pleased. I'm gonna go tell the others ;)

Developer(+1)

Haha yeah the hind leg of the cricket always bothered me as well (my bad). I will definitely tweak the animation after the voting has closed. Funnily enough, the cricket animation was one of the first things we did, following which map traversal became our primary obstacle to overcome. It's so cool to hear you enjoyed our interpretation of the theme. We knew we wouldn't be able to create a very complex game with only one programmer (Sinisterstuf), so we wanted to at least address the theme on multiple levels, since it was so broad. Were you able to complete the game?

Submitted

Haha, I can only survive until when i see those flowers and then i drop in the pool lol

Developer(+1)

Yeah, Thesryn called me a sadist when he saw  that last level for the first time. I can't even get past it consistently and I designed the thing! So don't feel bad. I'll continue trying to balance the level so that its tough but not impossible

Developer (5 edits) (+1)

Thanks a lot for all the praise, it feels so good to get such positive feedback because we spent long evenings working on this together after our day jobs and tried hard to make something that fits the theme 100% in a creative way!

And I also will check out your code to see how you made it land on those stones.

If you’re still curious, the code should be understandable even if you’ve never written Go code before. The game’s collision-response logic is 35 lines of code and this specific “trick” had 2 parts:

Hope to see you again in GameOff 2022! 😉

Thank you for the links! This is really helpful! And Happy New Year! See you in GameOff 2022!

Really addicting and hard. A jump meter would have been good, since it takes quite some time to get used to it this way. Falling in the water near the end was frustrating, reminding me of “Getting Over It”.

Great work!

Developer(+1)

Glad you found it addicting! Thanks for playing.
The jump meter, a lot of people seem to have wanted, sadly we didn't have time to experiment with it but, it is what it is.
I've never played "Getting Over It" (But I've looked at it)and I did have it in my mind throughout the process, in the sense that I preferred this game to be, mechanically quite simple, but hard to perfect...and then there is of course the fact that you can mess up and go right to the start!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback, interesting comparison! If we’ve got capacity after the jam is over the jump meter is on the top of our list of enhancements to add to the game!

Submitted(+3)

This is a hard but addicting game. I got stuck a bunch of times and despite being determined to make it to the end, the glitches made it pretty challenging to see where the fruit was when I got to the top, so I  was aimlessly jumping around until I fell in the water and was sent back to the beginning so I gave up :). Really simple concept but well executed. Sure, a jump meter would have been nice but I eventually got a feel for the jump power and was flying through the map after a few minutes of playing.

The background track is awesome. Overall great game!

Developer(+1)

Really glad you got the feel of the game, (I would say I'm glad you got addicted, but that doesn't sound great!)
You may have read that the jump meter was in the pipeline but, that ended up not being a top priority, and honestly, I like the minimalist (non existant) hud anyway.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Hats off for your perseverance!

flying through the map after a few minutes of playing

From our play-testing this was our impression too; easy to learn but hard to master. Thanks for trying out our game and glad you liked it, it sounds like you really got a feel for it.

Submitted(+2)

Nice work, the mechanism of jumping is quite hard to master though.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback, we were aiming for a different approach than normal platformers with the jump-only controls revolving around the cricket in the bug theme. With a bit of practice it should be easy to get the hang of it though :)

Developer

Thanks for taking the time to have a look at our game!
We had planned to make things slightly more intuitive, but time constraints didn't allow us to explore that much.
If you do end up "mastering" the mechanics (and also familiarizing yourself with the map) the whole game can be finished in probably less than 3 minutes. So we can't have it too easy.
But I do 100% understand that failing in a game being a requirement in order to learn is not for everyone (e.g. souls and rogue like games)

Submitted(+2)

Thats really the maximum of BUG you can put in one game👍. I did it in 123 jumps which was fun but in there end there were only few pixels left to see XD

Developer

Congratulations! I’ll add your name to the highscore list! Glad you appreciated the multiple layers of the “bug” interpretation of the theme.

there were only few pixels left to see

If the darkness gets too overwhelming you can jump into the water to reset it. Although it’s understandable if the idea of starting from the beginning is frustrating 😅

Submitted(+2)

This is the game I've seen in the Jam written in Go, nice work. Sometimes the character was floating above the ground or in the air but I really like the chill music and the graphics.

Developer

Thanks for trying it out!

character was floating above the ground or in the air

You may consider these intentional bugs 😉 without them the game is nearly impossible to complete.

Glad you appreciate the art and music. Go isn’t a typical language of choice for making games but it helps keep things simple and straightforward, especially with the dead simple game library Ebiten.

Submitted (1 edit) (+2)

I agree with the comment about adding a jump meter. It's hard to tell how far you're going to get with a jump. The audio was very charming.

Developer

Glad you liked the music, if we’ve got capacity after the jam is over the jump meter is on the top of our list of enhancements to add to the game, thanks for the feedback!

Developer

Thanks for having a go anyway, due to time constraints we didn't really get to play around with a visible hud.
Most of, well everything was a first time thing for us(sinisterstuf programmed this using Go (who does that)) not that a jump meter is overly complex, we had one designed already but it was on the back burner.
If you get any spare time, and aren't stressed out from giving feedback to loads of pixilated games, I encourage you to come back here, and see if you get the hang of it.
Once you do, it's more of, trying to get everything perfect for a lower jump count, than trying hard to finish the game.
Plus, the music is pretty funky hey :p

Submitted(+3)

This is a really interesting game with unique control mechanics. Aside from some visual glitches like the rendering of the cricket, it was really fun to jump around the environment. I think it would make the gameplay more consistent if there was a "jump meter" that visually indicated how much power we were putting into a jump. But I also like the idea of leaving it up to the player to get more comfortable with the jumping and judge it by feel/timing. Great job!

Developer

Thanks for taking the time to leave feedback! The jump meter was actually in our backlog but it didn’t make it in before the deadline and we decided it was playable without it, like you said the player needs to get the feel of it.

How far did you get? If you finished, how many jumps did it take you? (Trying to judge if the game is too easy or too hard).
