Hey there! I really liked the animations and visuals of this game! Good job to you and team!

I want to help people as much as possible, so I tend to leave detailed feedback. Please don't take my comments as criticisms or not liking it. Feel free to ignore any feedback that doesn't match your vision! Here's my thoughts in order as I played :)

  1. Love the frog animation, super cute with those big eyes.
  2. First few ripples could be more obvious, either through subtle glows or bigger ripple sizes, to direct players to click them. I spent too much time just chilling and distracted by the frogs (LOL), until I read the instructions and realise I'm supposed to click the ripples.
  3. First fish was way too hard to catch. It was a clownfish that took 5 minutes, I thought it was a boss fish.
  4. The fishing controls in that one could be a little more responsive - if I click, it sends the bar floating up too much, and takes time for it to fall down. This makes it a lot more difficult to control than other games I played with this mechanic - it's also too slow relative to the erratic-ness of the fish's movement. If the difficulty must be kept high, I would prefer a smaller 'area' for the bar, and tighter controls, so that it makes me feel like I have more control over winning, rather than somewhat relying on the RNG of the fish to not do those erractic movements, as the moment it does, my progress quickly drops by half.
  5. After that, the subsequent fishes were easier to catch, not sure why. It made me wish for a give up button on the first fish.
  6. In the "You caught a fish" popup, there is a 2D icon of a fish that programmatically rotates in the horizontal axis - because it's a 2D sprite, it looks like it squishes itself when it rotates. In the middle, it becomes like 1 pixel wide. I think it's better to use another animation, as by comparison, all the other animations were top-notch and this one stands out as looking a little 'glitchy'. Maybe put some sparkle animations instead if you want to draw attention to the catch.
  7. I don't really stay on a game once I've figured out its core loop, so once I caught a few fishes, I kinda wanted to move on. I think to keep me playing, some incentives for catching things would be nice - better rods that have more stability for example, and also act as long term goals.
  8. I see you want to take it further - I think there's lots of ideas to expand on beyond the jam like different rods, baits, fish rarities, maybe even taking the catch to cook and gain buffs or flex.

Overall, it's a nice relaxing experience that I enjoyed taking a break from gamedev to come here and try out games :)

  • I already said it before but I super love the frogs haha. I wish they did something like catching flies for me to use as bait or something. I would surely rear a whole family of these cute little frogs!! <3
  • Also I thought it was pretty cool that it is a game where literally nothing can go wrong, and I love the irony in it.
  • I wanted to also thank you for your previous feedback, I haven't replied fully to it and will do so once I get some time off! :)
  • Music choice was great
  • Art choice was great
  • Vibes were fantastic~
Developer

Thank you for your reply! Glad you liked the frogs ^^

2. oh, i see, thank you we'll look closer! You are right, this might have been done more obvious

3. T_T thats a bad luck. I think we should move this mini game to boss fish and make it more flappy bird like

4. You are rigth! We received a lot of critique about fishing difficulty, we definitely needed more time tuning it ^^

5.  Yeah give up button would be a good solution for jam. We didn't have enough time to tune it and didn't want to let people lose(cause it's like something wen't wrong) and give up button might be a compromise solution in case random made catching too hard.

6. Hmm, I see.  We'll think about it

7. Did you find achievements btw? I thought they might work like a long time goals, so we could show that there is more content to unlock

Cool idea for frogs+flies we'll remember it, thx! ^^ Thank you!

Super polished and enjoyable game, you really nailed the chill vibe! I specially appreciated the interactivity with the game world, like the music frog or tapping on the snails to make them hide :) Congrats to the whole team!

Developer

Thank you! Glad you like interactions that we managed to add, we'll add much more

I like the literal interpretation of the prompt, It is just a chill fishing game. I've been playing a lot of stardew so the fishing mechanic was nice and familiar. I slightly wish there was a more obvious catching a fish sound, kinda like the bloop bloop in stardew, but other than that, I enjoyed the chillness.

Sorry Frogsrop & Co for taking so long to get back to you after you left such a detailed and thoughtful review of our game! Being back to my usual game dev project, making sure we're hitting milestones and designing in such a long-term way is stressful in a completely different way than doing a jam is...

Which is why I appreciate very much the type of game Hook Line & Chill is. No challenging enemies, intricate tutorials, no frills. Instead, its a serene experience that accompanies you into a relaxed state of mind. It was the right game for the right time.

Taking the theme so literally, "nothing can go wrong", was actually a really welcome change after having played through countless jam titles with somewhat weak takes on the theme.

Your team nailed the vibe! The music was inviting and the rest of the audio cues were well done. Hook Line & Chill is also pleasant to look at, and I loved the snails <3

There isn't much to pick apart here. Maybe the music transitions could have been more dynamic? Though sometimes the quiet spaces in between led to a welcome reflectiveness.  There are features I'd like; translucent water to see the shapes of fish, a music "mood" selector, and tons of random clickables like the snails!

I'm looking forward to seeing what your team has in store next! If there is a place I can follow you lot, let me know!

Thank you very much for your detailed response! I wish you strength and motivation in your project!

Thank you for your comment about music will defenetly look into it. Actually we wanted to make our own procedural music but we could not finish it in time T_T (it was really ambitios to think that we could finish it btw). We defenitly should add translucent water! Thx!

About mood i think we'll make different zones and music should suit zone ₍𝄐⩌𝄐₎

We are only at the beggining of out indie dev path, so we don't have any socials, but thank you! Wishlisted your game =)

Cool game
Would be better if you add some incentive for fishing..
I like the music.. Good job!!

Developer

Thanks! We'll definitely add something like this. Thank you for playing!

Nice little fishing simulator that could be added to any future game. I think you did good and liked the chill vibe. I caught lots of fish and some snails, also got some achievements.

Developer

Thank you for playing! We actually planing to expand this to fishing multiplayer game :D

Submitted

Oh multiplayer that sounds cool. I wonder if it will be like Salmon fishing during peak season where you are side by side and all hoping the fish will catch your line....

Developer

Hmmm, I didn't experienced it irl, so it's hard for me to tell now. But I'll look into it! Thank you for idea, I really appreciate it!

So cute, so chill, so 🐸!

Developer

Thank you!

Very cozy game! I love the Stardew fishing minigame, you've replicated it very well! The only thing I'd say is off about it is that the bar has no weight - when you click the bar springs up really fast, while in Stardew the bar's speed is based on it's current velocity. But that is just a nitpick. This game is so much fun and extremely relaxing! I absolutely love the art, it's adorable! Along with the lofi music, it creates such a cozy atmosphere. I'll definitely be returning to play this later, good job!

Developer

Thank you for thoughtfull response! Thx for sharing your thoughts about stardew fishing you described it really well! We didn't want to simply implement stardew fishing, but we were strongly inspired by it. So we made our interpretation, but it need more tuning I think. Currently the range of difficulty is too large :D Probably we'll move it to unique fishes and make this minigame harder

Submitted(+1)

You've implemented it very well! Overall it feels very satisfying, it definitely doesn't have to be just a copy of Stardew's fishing. In fact, adding new elements to it could make it so much more interesting and fun than it already is! If you'd like some inspiration, Cleanup on Isle Goblin has a pretty unique take on a fishing minigame, and if you want to go for something a bit more traditional, Far Cry 5 has a really fun, challenging and rewarding fishing minigame.

Developer (1 edit)

Oh, wow! Big thanks for the references! I didn't expect to see "Guitar Hero" for fishing! xD We'll definitely add more fishing mechanics because there's a different feeling when you fight a big fish versus a small one, or when casting a spinning rod versus waiting with a fishing rod. Different mini-games definitely make sense for each process.

Far cry is really good one, 100% I need to implement my interpretation of this minigame

Submitted(+1)

You're welcome! There's a lot you can do with fishing mechanics. Making the player do a different minigame based on the size of the fish is a really clever idea! I'm also a big fan of the Far Cry minigame, it's also really flexible in terms of difficulty and you can easily expand upon it with more features, such as using different baits or tackles! Whatever you do, I'm sure the end result will be very fun regardless!

Submitted(+1)

First of all, I really like the aesthetic of this game! The music is nice and very suitable for Saturday or Sunday chill night. But maybe the click is too sensitive for me. When I click a bit, the bar rises too much and when I let go, it falls too slow. No problem if this is intended, maybe I'm just impatient! Great work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Yeah, we definitely should rework the fishing game. Thanks for playing  ₍𝄐⩌𝄐₎

Submitted(+1)

I love how cohesive the overall aesthetic of the game is, with the beautiful art, calming yet fun music, and chill lakeside fishing. I especially love the frogs, they add so much whimsy to the game. I agree that the bar should maybe not move so much with each click though :')

Developer

Thank you ⸜(。˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝♡
I agree with you too, now we are thinking about how it should be

Submitted(+1)

The art is beautiful, and the sound is so relaxing! I especially love the little animals around the lake—plus the Easter egg with the frog king was a great touch. However, I feel like the bar’s sensitivity is sometimes a bit too high.

Developer

Thank you!  ₍ᐢ. .ᐢ₎ ₊˚⊹♡ Will fix it in future!

Submitted(+2)

This is a really relaxing game, I like it a lot! I adore the dancing frog as the music toggle, and I also like the inclusion of the achievement / statistic scroll. The art is lovely too, excellent work!

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you! We're really appreciate you liked the scroll, achievements especially :)

Submitted(+1)

Great game. I'm actually surprised not many people interpreted the theme like this, it's a pretty fun take that it's just chill and literally nothing can go wrong. the art really looks nice too. overall pretty chill.

Developer

Thank you! We lost two days on the theme... No idea truly fit the theme or was liked by all members :D
