Judge feedback

Judge feedback is anonymous and shown in a random order.

  • This game is relatively clever by design and clearly is an outlier in the sense of innovation based on the other submissions. It fits the theme and the ai is your companion which is a nice touch. Obviously the experience is lacking because the game play itself dwindles very fast. There is no clear story line without reading between the lines but there is a touch of assumed story here thus not getting the lowest mark for this category.
  • Theme was clearly conveyed with the AI Companion and rivalry with both the in game opponent and leaderboard with the elo system. The user and pins definitely makes the replayability much easier. More depth and agency could also be good as sometimes it feels like it just depends on luck but the base for a good game is already there.

Tell us about your game!
Thinking on "Rivalry", I've created a game where you and your AI bot (trained by you) play against other AI bots (trained by other players). The game has a leaderboard based on player's Elo rating, updated after each battle. Your "Companion", an AI bot, will learn to launch missiles by watching how you play, and will assist you launching missiles. Furthemore, your companion bot will battle alone against other real players + theirs companion bots, changing your ranking.

Hey Rogerio !

How are you? It's Ilias again. I have some new questions for you.

What do you think about game jams in general, and this game jam in particular? What do you think could have been better, and do you have any suggestions?

What were your favorite video games?

Where do you think the strength of video games resides? What do you believe a video game should have to be a successful video game?

If you would like, you can tell me a little bit more about yourself and your background, if you have any information you would like to share.

Thank you in advance,

Ilias.

Hey  Rogerup (@RogerioPenchel) !

How are you? it's Ilias , i finally got to play/test your game "Missile Mentor" , Sorry it took me till now , the list of game entries is long .

Your game is nice interesting and intriguing.

_______________________________________________________________

At first it was a little hard to me to understand how to master the gameplay .

And btw the simplistic visuals and especially the two colors choice black and white is a beautiful choice

it's always seems challenging to me to create a game with only two colors , and i have a plan to do so in the future when it's possible to me. , and yes Black and White and maybe Red too.

nice choice Rogerio !!

Smooth controls when properly executed in addition to well crafted visuals (even simplistic ) can be the start of really good content results !

Fun Games can be cool adventurous and nice memories !!

_______________________________________________________________

At the begining the loading screen takes to much time  , i think it's a unity bug ( if you have used unity ) , many other jammer had it too on their game entries .

_______________________________________________________________

Questions:

Did you implement any optimization techniques, or did you choose to use only in-engine optimizations?

What engine and tools did you use to create your game, including the graphics?

How challenging was it to develop your game? Did you face any significant obstacles?

What inspired your game idea and gameplay? Could you share the story behind the game's name?

How did you get into video game development?

_______________________________________________________________

I am pretty sure you allready rated my game , Thank you Rogerio and thank you again for your support for my game entry back then it was really appreiated !!

_______________________________________________________________

This is just for fun

Note: It would mean a great deal to me if you could rate my game. If you haven't already, feedbacks from friends and fellow gamers is valuable to me. Thank you in advance for your consideration and your time.

Thanks!

Ilias.

Hey roger, Finally getting to play your game! Your ruthless leaderboard smashing play in my game still has me flabbergasted 😂

[After Playing]

Man, this game. Wow. I love the training AI concept. (I already knew about it via discord but I didn't exactly know how it would work) The really impressive thing for me was the ELO & matchmaking system. Alot of games have multiplayer & you can't really play against/with other players. But this 'static' style of multiplayer as you're competing with leaderboards players again only possible cause they trained their 'AI'. Amazing concept. How much time did it take you to think of this? We've seen time & time again that simple controls can be really addictive & this is the case for this game.
Top level entry this one! 👏

Edit: I sadly do not have the leaderboard smashing spirit such as yourself so excuse my low score haha

Developer(+1)

Wow, thanks for the so kind comment.

I quickly thought about the AI idea when I saw that I would like to have confrontations, and I would like to see confrontations between the players; but in game launches, like in Jams, it is always difficult to bring players together at the same time to bring fluidity to the game.

So the idea came up, I wasted a lot of time with the initial AI, which was denser (I had thought in something like a snake game) but when I went to upload to the server I had problems, so I spent another day thinking about a game in which I could carry out the learning AI within the game itself, and this idea came about for a simpler game, fun, and that could hold people for a while.

The game already has 1090 players, and I'll improve it after the Jam.

About your low score, don't worry, our AIs will meet on the battlefield!

Submitted(+1)

Again, it really shows in the game that you thought of the problem of bringing players together at the same time in the game & found a solution to that.

I'm not surprised the game has picked up pace - That's super awesome to see! Very well deserved.

Yes they will!

really cool and innovative idea to have you train your AI that plays for you, and the game was a lot of fun!

the gameplay could be a bit more complicated, or maybe the bases could be further apart, because i found that the margin for aiming was very small and it was almost guaranteed to land some kind of hit

it was really addictive, even though i think i was quite bad at it!

Developer(+1)

Hitting closer to the center makes a good difference in the damage.
Our AIs will meet on the battlefield.
Thank you for the comment.

An unique idea of rivalry. Fun to play again and again. Would be great to see this implementation in some colorful design :)

Developer(+1)

After Jam I intend to make a more robust version, perhaps an option to choose graphics between modern and old school. Great that you liked the game, thanks for the suggestion and have fun.

Submitted(+1)

The idea is really nice. Game is addictive.

Developer

I'm glad I caught it. Thanks.

Submitted(+1)

I like the game menu. I wonder what the points I get for a hit depend on, I just constantly get a different number of points

Developer (1 edit)

About the missile, the closer to the center you hit the opponent base, the more destruction you cause, and the more chance you have of winning.

The score (Elo Rating) only changes at the end of the match and depends on whether you won, drew or lost, and also depends on the Elo ratings of each player before the match (your rating and your opponent's rating). The higher your opponent's Elo rating, when you win, your Rating goes up more points.

The Elo rating is used in Chess and Tennis to classify the players. (More info  here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system)

Thank you for the comment.

I liked the idea of the game, it has a great touch of innovation, it certainly has potential for evolution and even the creation of a new style of game that is not currently on the market

Developer

The idea of training an AI to play like the player can be applied to many types of games, making it easier for players to face each other. Thanks for the comment.

Submitted(+1)

Interesting idea, maybe can be developed more. Nice idea with pin

Developer(+1)

Yes, I will evolve the game after the Jam ends. Thank you for the comment.

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

Cool idea, simple but effective! The elo system is a really nice touch! Is there real machine learning behind the bots (like NN, RL or anything like that?)

Developer (1 edit)

I started with neural networks, but when I uploaded it to my server it didn't work (I assume it's an old CPU and didn't have the necessary instructions). So I went for something simpler, I used the standard deviation of the player's errors and a normal distribution for the launches; given the simplicity of the game, this is sufficient. Thank you for the comment!

Submitted(+1)

Extremely addictive game! If I had more time, I would push to the top of the leaderboard. The idea of battling with your AI that learns from you is also extremely innovative. The only thing missing from this game is a storyline. Greatly designed game!

Developer

One thing that I think is important in web games is that they are intuitive, easy and quick to understand, as this is what these players' profile requires, if they don't understand quickly they move on to the next game.
It's cool that my game caught you on. Thank you for the comment.

(+1)

After two or tree matches I become a big fan of the game. It has this "one more try" spirit.

Developer(+1)

Hey, you were hooked.
That's what I'm looking for, despite the simple appearance of the game, I try to make something nice with retro graphics and captivating sounds. And I use my time much more to fine-tune the gameplay and try to make it "addictive".
Thanks for the comment.

We had a similar take on the theme but I must say yours is a lot cleaner, more focused. I really like what you did with this.

I'd be interested in how exactly your algorythm works. My guess is you're taking the average power used by the player on each configuration and adding a small variation but I'm not sure.A

Anyway this was a really pleasant experience, seing my companion slowly starting to score bullseyes more reliably than me is very satisfying.

Developer

I'm glad you liked the game and thanks for the kind comment.

In this type of game it is relatively easy to repeat human behavior with basic statistics, using mean, standard deviation and normal distribution to simulate variations in behavior.

Have fun and let's meet on the battlefield with our AIs.

I always liked Scorched Earth and this game took me back to playing it. Simple gameplay, nice UI but I found it very hard to actually win.

Might need more practice :D Good job!

Developer(+1)

You need to train, or get lucky and catch easier opponents.
