For some levels I found that sketching out the level layout on a piece of paper was very helpful for my poor, 3D brain. Not too difficult, but very interesting. I love the idea of multiple dimensions and moving between them, though it always really confuses me.

I did feel like the game was missing some juice - particles, more sound effects, etc. Other than that, great job!

That took a while to wrap my head around but i'm glad I stuck through it and eventually completed all levels including the bonus level.

Developer

Good job on beating that bonus level! I did my best to make it challenging but doable.

Very interesting. You still have to think and act in 2D though. I was wondering what you could do to make it truly 1D while still keeping it interesting...

Developer(+1)

I've seen a lot of truly 1D games, but to be honest they are kinda boring. I mean it's hard to make a complex 1D game. That's why I went for this middle ground.

We totally had the one dimension idea but all of the ways we thought about taking it didn't seem like good ideas. This is actually a really good take on the idea. And the execution is pretty spot on. Good job!

Developer

Thanks!

I feel like I actually learned something about how dimensions work from playing this game.  I thought at first the camera was rotating around the level, but once I realized it was just moving through the cross section, it did become significantly more understandable (realizing your character is a circle also helped).  I thought it was interesting how the best way to play was moving the camera and player in the same direction at the same time.

Anyway, cool idea that I may have pondered myself but had no idea how to execute.  I also lack the insight as to where you might proceed with this idea if you wanted to take the game further, but it is something that would be neat to see if it could be done.

Developer

Teaching something was surely one of my goals! I'm very glad that it worked!
I have plans for adding more to the game, so be sure to check it in a week or so.

great idea. weirdly fun to play. maybe change the colour scheme it does start to fuck with the eyes after a while. otherwise good job

Developer

Thanks!
Graphical design isn't really my thing and I didn't test it for a longer time, but thanks for the tip.

The restriction was neat, A great take on 1D play, it did eventually feel a little boring for me though,, i wonder what other mechanics could be added to spice it up. hmmm.

here is mine. https://newkryptonite.itch.io/the-lonly

Glad you liked it!
I was thinking about other mechanics, but didn't have time to implement them. Hopefully I'll do that soon!

Very cool idea, and intuitive to control. My one suggestion would be since its very easy to lose the player, would it be possible to display where on the axis they reside? Otherwise good job :)

Developer

Thank you!
I thought about adding an indicator of where the player and maybe coins are, but it would make it too simple and would feel like cheating to the whole idea of only seeing 1D. And getting lost is part of the experience.

Am I only the one who finds it weird to have a sound slider on the menu screen without any audible feedback? :D But that aside: love the concept! The visual design is very simple, yet enough to get the idea (even without looking at the wall of text presented under "How does this game work?").

In terms of progression: I would disable movement on the y-axis (both for the camera and the player) in the first level and then introduce those one-by-one in level 2 and 3. As of right now, you can lose track of your character as early as in level 1 if you hit the wrong keys - without any explanation presented by the game. Also, as others have already pointed out, the scroll speed could be a bit higher (or somehow adjustable, e.g. by pressing shift) and collisions with walls would benefit from audio feedback.

Would love to see more challenges (like moving or deadly obstacles) added to the later levels.

The sound slider was made pretty quickly, just to get it working.
Locking camera and movement in 1st level is good idea, I'll think about that.
I'm thinking about making about expanding on that game, adding more levels and such. Moving and/or deadly obstacles are on my list.
Thanks for the feedback and I'm glad you liked it!

I saw a similar idea of this, but feels totally different! Interesting! :) Good work! :)

Developer

Thanks!

incredibly well executed! my team and i also thought of doing a 1D game but couldn't figure out how to make it interesting, and you certainly have! i'd make the movement in general a bit faster though

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback! I took me some time to figure out how to do it nicely, but luckily I had didn't have anything else to do for that 48 hours.

Really unique idea well executed! I think you could make it clearer when the player character is colliding with a wall, I thought the game had glitched out at first! Also, I think I'd like to move the camera faster, not all the time, but most of the time. Maybe if the user is pressing shift while they move the camera?

Developer

Thanks for the insight!
And yes, seeing where collisions is hard, but that's because of the fact that you only see one slice. I could add a sound for trying to walk into wall.  And camera speed is something I also didn't really notice, mostly I think because of the fact that I knew the maps already.

This is a spectacular idea, addictive and peculiar. Well done!

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.

really cool game! i find it helps to move the camera and the player at the same time so you dont lose the player too easily, but its also fun to move the player while completely off camera. really neat concept and execution!

now imagine this with moving obstacles

Developer(+1)

Thanks!
I was actually thinking about moving obstacles, but I didn't have enough time to make more maps. Maybe I'll update it with more updates someday.
