[I played the current web version]

I really enjoyed this! Haven't played around with the editor yet, just the 9 main levels, but the mechanics were well-taught, levels naturally explaining the power of your movement, and the style was great. The music and textures fit together really nicely.

There's only two things I might change. The first is the background; most of your level geometry is a dark grey, and a dark grey or black background under that isn't great on the eyes. The second is the 'Boost' block, maybe renaming to 'Push' would work better.  Might just have been me, but my first instinct was that it would act like a speed boost in a racing game if I placed the active cube on top of it.

Developer

Push is just what I needed to hear. I saw the game at a friend's on there monitor and it was very dark compared to my nicely calibrate screen. I have it on my list to lift the standard black blocks a tad. The push instead of boost is a great insight. I shall have that. Putting the finishing touches on the post jam version as we speak.

This is absolutely amazing. The puzzles were well crafted and entertaining, the mechanics were original and the graphics are astonishing. The polish overall is just outrageous, it would be impressive done in two weeks by a whole team, but you did it alone in just one. It has so much potential for many more levels, Im really looking forward to see it expanded. I think the music loop was a little too short so it got repetitive (especially if you are dumb like me and get stuck in a puzzle) other than that 5 stars all around.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback. I wonder if I should worry about the loop? See it does different things each time and it might just be that it decided to keep it really repetitive for you. That's the joy of the random stuff, I can't check and we will never know. I had not thought about it just looping the same thing over and over. It is in theory possible as I have not taught it not to do that. I wonder if that is what happened for you? Adding new songs is just a matter of constucting new elements so as I move it forward I can have new "tracks".

I was gutted about the levels I was able to include. I ran out of time. On Sunday morning I had made 0 levels and the reason it ends where it does is the Green ones were so very broken until the very last minute. There are 3 new cube types and 3 other floor blocks all full functional and included that I ran out of time to make levels to feature them. They are in the editor for people to play with. New levels I thought broke the definition of Polish so I have sat on my hands and not done them yet. It is very frustrating, but hey, it wouldn't be a Jam if you weren't gutted about something.

Submitted(+1)

I just played the entire game again and it the music does different things. Maybe they are similar and I was too focused with the puzzle to realize the differences. I think 9 levels is more than enough to showcase the game and you did an absolutely impressive job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks. I have had a really nice week. A combination of the polish allowing me to just tidy up and all the great feedback has worked a treat.

Submitted(+1)

Awesome game! Very impressive that this was made by one person. The art and music is great! The gameplay is very unique, but it also somewhat reminds me of an old flash game that I can't remember the name of. Great use of the theme too! Only bad thing I can say about this game is that it crashed a few times, but that may even be an issue with my own computer. Fantastic work!

Developer

Thanks for playing. Do you have any idea at what point it crashed so I can investigate? Was it the Jam version or Polish 3? That will be very helpful to know

Submitted(+1)

Polish 3 and it happened soon after starting a level, but it didn't happen every time

Submitted(+1)

A simply beautiful game. Everything about this is so well executed, my favourite game of the jam!

Developer(+1)

Thanks. I really appreciate you taking the time out to play it.

Submitted(+1)

The effort and energy you put into this game is evident! I am extremely impressed by what you've managed to do in just a week. As others have said, this is probably the most commercially viable game I've seen so far. I can see a lot of people wanting to be in a team with you for future game jams aha! Very well done!

Developer

Thanks for the comments. As for teaming up it will take a brave soul, but I am always open to collaboration. I probably averaged 12 hours a day for the full 7 days. I am fortunate that I could schedule my day job to allow for commiting to the Jam, I am not sure how easy that is for most people.

Submitted(+1)

Now that is a nice aesthetic. Sounds are on point, especially the little "ting" when block moves.
Neat use of the theme, having the cube's "one time use" life build up the level for the next.
Could easily see this becoming a mobile game at some point. Great work! 😁

Developer

Hey thanks. Adapting it for touch will be a nice little challenge for sure. One step at a time eh? I am looking forward to adding more levels once the rating closes.

Submitted(+1)

At first I wasn't sure if it would end up being a simpler version of bloxors or something but definitely came into it's own as I played through the levels. The idea of having to use all these different types of cubes is cool and it's presented very well both graphically and musically. As others said the menus were a bit slow but ultimately not too much of an issue and that you even have a fully working menu and level builder system is pretty exceptional! It would be nice if the controls could maybe be switched a bit as having to change hand positions felt a little clunky, I think movement on WASD and rotation on QE might work well but I imagine its tough when we probably position our hands differently by default. Not sure if this is intended as well but a minor thing, when I used a green to boost the grey cube on level 8 I boosted in the new direction when it reached platform 2 but since the boost takes an extra step to stop it was not boosted to platform 3, just resulted in a quick restart though.

Thoroughly impressive game, I saw you wanted to continue development on it so really looking forward to seeing where you take it!

Developer

Thanks. I think I know what you mean. I noticed that you can click the boost before the cube has settled and it just ignores it. If that's what you mean then that is on my list to investigate. I noticed that it plays the rolling sfx when it hits the wall which means it is still active for a moment when it should not be, at that moment a click on the boost will fail but it looks like it should work. The Boosts were the crunch inducer for me. Much more complicated to impliment impecibally than I had allowed for! There is an extra level in the forum on the main page if you want a preview of what comes next. Paste it into the editor.

Submitted

Love the art for the cubes. Sound is also really well implemented. I would say this is one of the most commercially viable submissions I've seen.

If I was to offer any criticisms, it would be that the puzzle mechanics themselves are mostly familiar/derivative (although I understand that is often necessary given the time constraints), and I'm not sure I got how the game fits the 'one time use' theme (probably just me!).

All in all, excellent!!! Well done! :)

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for playing. There is already a lot of mechanics in the game ready to burst out. I ran out of time to make the levels and I am sitting on my hands until the Judges are done. Half of the blocks are not currently in leveles you can play (but can be used in the level designer) and with everything in play I am pretty confident it would feel less derivative. It is a shame, but I am pretty sure making new levels breaches Polish!

In terms of the Theme it's not particularly deep. Once each Cube is used it can't be used again. Also things like the bouncers can only be used once. It might not be very romantic but it is there.

Submitted(+1)

Great game! I like the puzzle a lot, I enjoy playing it. Music and sounds are beautiful, and the cubes look cool.

Submitted

Wow this game deserves a noble actually
it's simple but yet  so fun and engaging to play

I like the visuals are and the music, i hated how the menu lags a bit and wait for something to wok but overall a great game that deserves 5 starts on all aspetcs especially that it's done by one person and not a single asset used

Great work man

Developer(+1)

The delay with the menu hurts a little. I will fix it properly. It never happened on my machine which is pretty high spec so I didn't think about it. The fix for the polished allows it to work on slower machines but the real fix feels like a bit more than polish. I will have it buttery smooth for after the judging. I am really pleased you liked it lag and all

Submitted

I don't think it's something related to the machine power, the menu takes a while to take commands while the menu reforms, i think it's just some kind of input lock, but nothing serious amazing game and I really enjoyed playing it

Developer

I have fixed it! I added some juice to the menu visuals in the Polish 3 version. It takes just as long, but no longer implies a lag that is not there. It is a required wait. It has made a big difference.

Submitted(+1)

Amazing, just amazing. I loved the puzzles, the aesthetics, and the fact that you have a level editor is super impressive and the icing on the cake.

Just a few suggestions for improvements, and these are all just to improve what is already a great game:

There is the potential to use musical sfx to a greater extent. The general rotate sfx did not gel with the background music, and feel part of it, in the same way that the cymbal crashes for success did. If you pushed this idea, perhaps using a melodic note on a synth that fits the harmony and timbral sophistication of the bgm, with the note chosen randomly from a scale, or ascending, even following a composed sequence of notes etc, it would be really nice.

The menus look gorgeous, but it would feel better if they were a little more responsive. Choosing a level quickly, it felt like the game was waiting for the animation to finish before starting the level. I'm not sure if this is because you are waiting for the level to load first, before changing what can be seen?

Anyway, don't worry about the above too much, I am so impressed with your game and I will definitely revisit the level editor when I have more time.

Thanks for sharing. I reaaally like this one.

Developer

Thanks for this detailed response. That's a solid idea for sound effects. They are very much chucked in at the moment. The crunch on the last day was unreal, especially in the heat and the sfx was low priority. There are a whole set of fully functioning mechanics that I could not get fixed in time to make the levels. They are available in the level editor. I am pretty sure that completing my levels is out of the scope of polish. Now I am pretty sure I have done all the polishing I can I will spend the next few days rating and then finish the levels in time for the awards. If you do visit the editor then the treats in store are as follows: fire blocks, like the hazard but turn you into a fire block too when you die. You have water (six sided solids) SSS which quench the fire blocks and evaporate. It will be interesting to explore them. There is a bomb SSS which takes out an area of 3x3 blocks, There are electric blocks which alternate on and off which like the fire blocks replicate on death but they also get you when balancing on the edge. The hard edge SSS can balance on electric blocks and will die if settled on one but remains itself so you can use them to make islands for other types. Then there are shuffle blocks that randomly become one of the other blocks when you roll off of them. All of that works in the polished version as far as I know. I wish I had not had such a hard time of it in the Sunday so I could have done those levels. The green boost SSS broke everything and plan b wiped my time out. So close. Sorry for the essay but its not obvious how much is waiting to be discovered in the custom editor yet so here it is.

Developer

Ah the level load delay is due to loading the level. In the original it has a massive spike that I did not notice until people started playing. I have a pretty tasty set up so I did not get a hint of it. In the polish I spread the load out a bit more gently. I will sort it out so something holds that moment a bit nicer but on my machine it did it instantly so I had not planned to handle a delay there. I can live with it for now. Have you had a go on the polish 2 version? As far as I can tell I have got rid of the bugs

Submitted

Yeah, I played the second polish version and had the loading delay on that version.

Developer(+1)

I just clocked the game you made for the last one. I really liked that one. Happy to have an audio geek out if you want the deets

Submitted

Thanks. Yeah, we should chat :)

Developer(+1)

Polish 3 has enough juice in it to make the wait for level load to feel ok now. Thanks again for the feedback. Sometimes you become blind to things because you know why they are happening. Finding out how that impacts on people is what is so valuable to me about the Jams.

Submitted(+1)

really nice game it's got great visuals and solid gameplay with everything feeling refined and the music being smooth as hell

Developer(+1)

Thanks I am literally about to play yours now. I am pleased you liked it. I am very pleased with how the music turned out.

Submitted(+1)

Amazing puzzle game. Loved the beautiful visuals inside the cubes, and the great soundtrack. I got stuck on level 7 with the green cube for a long time, couldn't work out how they operated. I had to read your comment here before I understood. Apart from that I completed all the levels without any major issues. Overall a well designed game, very well done!

Developer

Thanks. I really liked your game. Whilst I was playing it I did find myself think about what would happen if we combined these two mechanics somehow? Then my brain started to hurt! Lol

Submitted

I've never been too good at puzzle games, but this one played in such a way that not only was I able to work out the mechanics of it and understand what I needed to do early on, but it also introduces new puzzles and mechanics to you through the gameplay for later use. The little sounds the blocks made when rolling was a really nice touch, and both the background music, and the simplistic aesthetic to the game went together really nicely and complimented each other.

One critique I have is the camera controls. Whenever I clicked A or D, the camera would pan for a short period of time before stopping, and I could not stop it while I was moving. Sometimes the responses were delayed as well, meaning sometimes I would lose control of the camera, or get sort of disoriented. The "It's a Trap" level also gave me some trouble, as I would stop the cube mid-air beside the orange block in the center, and then the game would get stuck and I would have to restart, as it wouldn't give me any more cubes.

Aside from that, I enjoyed the game, and I'm very impressed that you put all this together in a team of one within the span of a week!

Developer

Thanks. I think the glitch you are describing is the same as someone else found yesterday. I am going to investigate after todays play and rate session. I am really pleased you enjoyed it. The camera steps between N E S W, you cant move it to a specific rotation. I did initially have it free but working out which way the arrows faced was even more confusing than it is now. I had very much planned on revisiting the camera setting but ran out of time. I am tweaking it in the polish.

Really impressive game! I loved the sounds, the UI, and generally, I found the level design very clever. I think some things in the game can be too slow, like the time it takes to start a new level, or the time it takes to spawn a new cube / reset the level, but overall, it's an amazing entry! It feels really polished and I can see the potential of a full release. Great job!

Developer

Thanks. Did you have this load wait on just the original version? Hopefully load times are very much reduced on the polished version. If you are referring to the polish as well that would be very useful to know

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

Pretty cool game, didn't expect to see so many levels. Kind of got stumped on level 6, so I'm glad there is a walkthrough video available. I've been playing the polished build, and one thing I was able to do is get the game stuck after pressing direction arrow and space as a cube falls. The next cube doesn't spawn so the level is stuck like that until I press Q. That's not really a big issue due to an easy way to get back to main menu, the players are probably not supposed to be able to suspend a cube midair.

The green cube's power wasn't very obvious, wouldn't have figured it out quickly if I hadn't seen how to use in the video.

Very impressive work overall, I had a lot of fun playing this!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the heads up. Sounds like polish to me!

Submitted(+1)

Very nice game. It's sometimes a little hard to gauge to which sides the cube will "stick", for example in level 6 I can't roll to the end before the first yellow cube even though it looks to me it should work.
In the game description you said:

Procedural soudtrack will never be the same twice. It just remixes itself forever.

That sounds really interesting, could you explain how that is done and what tools you used to create that?

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Sure. In the most basic terms there is a bank of 29 loops, they run for 4 lots of 4s so 16 beats in total at 80 BPM. Each loop has a random int assigned to it on load that act as the odds for it being used at any point. Sometimes it will be a very likely option and sometimes it will be very unlikely. As it plays it goes through 4 steps of intensity, so min to max if you like. When it's minimum the odds are most stacked against any loop being selected so it is less busy, at it's max then you are more likely to have lots of them in play. There are a few other factors which govern what will be selected at any point. The combination of random odds, random selection and intensity mean that it's almost impossible that any of you will hear the music in the same way. Some of you will hear the poorest possible configuration and someone will hear the best. I made all the loops in Garageband and experimented with combining then to try and reduce anything that clashed. They are all in D. I wrote the code using the standard playscheduled stuff in Unity. https://docs.unity3d.com/ScriptReference/AudioSource.PlayScheduled.html

Submitted(+1)

Really really well made, and very polished! I’m truly impressed this is a one man job! Very creative puzzles, and the UI was very good!

Developer

Thanks. I appreciate it

Submitted(+1)

Really cool and polished experience, you did a great job with this one. I didn't figure out how to pass level 4 sadly, but its a cool idea. The visuals and sound worked well together, and you did a fantastic job with the UI and making a seamless experience. Great job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks. I will add some tips into the polish once I have rated enough games not to feel guilty. It was on my list I just ran out of time. I was pushing until the last moment. I had zero levels made come Sunday morning and it shows a little! It was fun but the hot weekend really came at the wrong moment for me. My brain was cooked! There is a walkthrough video on the game page if you are curious as to the solution

Submitted(+1)

I completely understand! We had the same issue, busted out all the levels right at the end haha. You really did a great job though!! I'll check out the video, thanks.

Submitted(+1)

Great puzzle game ! reminds me of bloxorz :D The UI desing and sound desing is increadible :O

Arrow keys rotating with the camera is a nice touch it really helped me to figure out directions.

Like other people said the game is confusing at first there sould be definetly a tutorial or tips spread around the game :]

Other than these small fixable issues i think you did an amazing work well done :D

(Also a level editor in a jam game wow !)

Developer

Thanks so much. I am looking forward to the last bits of polish this week. It's not going to be much, but it will make a big difference.
