I watched this game be played on stream, and I have to say, this is the epitome of "cringe art": not in the bad way, but in a very great way for the narrative. I was grimacing watching the notifications pop up, only to be swiped away in favor of getting lost in the space shooter game. It got even worse when I pieced together what kind of mess the protagonist had gotten himself into, and the fact that he just seemed too wrapped up in his game to care. It was both awful, and hilarious. A fantastic narrative overall, with the game just giving you something to do while you suffer at this guy's mistakes!
This is a sublime and moving piece of art. To capture an experience, the experience of being a person playing out a situation that you can't stop, that makes you cringe and really feel it. Oh it was just so well done. It needs to go viral. Who can it be sent to to get it some traction? That's what needs to happen next, it is worthy. Profoundly well done
Great entry, well done on putting a fresh spin on an old arcade classic. Definitely the best story game I've played so far.
The game has an interesting look i have to say that :D The story telling was good too !
The thing is the main game doesn't even matter :/ The only consequence of losing is reseting the score which is fair but it doesnt even matter to the games story or direction :/
I would compare this type of story telling to "simulacram"s or "welcome to the game"s story telling. The game we are playing can effect the story in these games. Maybe we can tear down the ads with our bullets or when dying to a meteor the screen cracks or declining a call summons a miniboss etc.
I apologize if i sounded rude but I can see great potential you should work on this after the jam ! I would realy like to play again if you decide to.
Overall i really liked the concept nice work :D
Thanks for playing! You dont have to apoligize at all, I apreciate every feedback I can get. So esencially I didnt want the game to interact with the notifications at all because I was afraid it would ruin the immersion. My idea was to have a sort of walking sim or a purely narrative expierience mashed together with a highscore minigame. So the "point" of the minigame would just be getting a highscore. This is obviously the first time I do something like this so it probably needs more balance between both. Also when you lose the score doesnt reset, it deducts 500 points. But you are not the first to tell me this so Im guessing the game is just too hard, I will make it so losing only deducts 100 points. Maybe a leaderboard or a "highscore" screen could validate the minigame a little more? Thanks again for playing and for the feedback!
It has a nice idea behind it, but it probably requires much more polish to really showcase it. Hope to see it improved!
Lool this was a new and fun experience. awesome work there.
The sister was getting on my nerve to be honest. so much whining lol
The end made me feel a bit bad though, not visiting mother's birthday lol. but jokes aside very fun game.
HAHAHAH that's really funny. Nice twist that I wasn't expecting.
I wanted to answer wifes call .... Anyway, the game is simple like any other galaxy shooter, but i found it interesting to play. The sound and art is great and the notifications part is cool so well done doing a great job. However, i tried to kill myself multiple times and at first i thought i have infinite amount of lives, but i noticed that score resets each time. I think the game jam theme was not fully interpreted and somethings missing.
Thank you for playing! The score doesn't reset when you die, it deducts 500 points. I thought having infinite lives gave a nice contrast with the real take on the theme and name of the game, that is: You only have one ACTUAL life. As Joe's wife says at the end "we only get one life and you are wasting yours". Maybe that wasn't clear enough though. Thanks again for playing and for the feedback!
Thanks for making me feel bad!
I don't even know how to rate this! The "game" was just filler content for you to do while the alerts made you feel worse about yourself.
Wonderful entry though.
i became addicted

I wasn't expecting much when I opened the game, but wow, that was a powerful experience! I loved it, congratulations to the team!
