How was the theme(s) implemented?
In a slightly unconventional take on retrofuturism, it's set in the "future" of 1999 and you play as the millenium bug attempting to take over a computer. Also you're putting out fires caused by your presence, and there's even dragons!
Where did the assets come from?
Homemade graphics
Most Graphics were created by the team during the jam
External audio
Some audio assets were downloaded or made prior to the jam

That was a ton of fun! I love the visual style of each of the areas, though it feels like maybe it should be Win95 Crawler :D. I was slightly disappointed I didn't have to play minesweeper while walking around the board (though that would have been quite a bit more work, I'm sure ^_^). My only (minor) complaint is that keypresses weren't queued, so sometimes I'd try to move and turn and I'd end up not turning which felt jarring. That, and the Dragon at the end I kinda expected to be Naturally Speaking... (hopefully someone gets the ~Y2K reference...)
This was great!
I loved the idea of finding bombs with the metal detector... it gave a common puzzle a very nice touch!
Everything was easy to understand through trial and error. Maybe game could use a bit of cooldown on weapon use -at first I was certain I needed to blast fires with 3 blasts at minimum for them to disperse! I learned how to use them properly fast enough, so its not a big of an issue overall.
Thanks for sharing :)
Ahahaha, what a lovely trip down memory lane. All of the elements that made win 95 memorable are there and it was so so fun to go through this game.
And aside from that, the puzzles were really good, creative use of the sweeper and magnet, everything felt intuitive and nothing overstayed its welcome. One of my favorites in the jam so far!
Cool little game, the movement, visuals, and audio are great. the puzzles are great, charting a course with the radar on the minesweeper field was fun. When I got to the last terminal I thought I got to a dead end but when I clicked it it turns out to be the right one, so I successfully bricked the computer (and millions others). Clippy is sooo annoying!
Nice little pearl!
Easy to understand and play, Most stuff makes sense either form the beginning or after a short figuring out. There is something magic about games where you have to gather coins to be able to buy upgrades that makes you progress.
Good job!
One of my favorite entries so far! This had me laughing out loud like a madman.
Thank you so much for creating this and sharing it with us. You can watch my full playthrough here: https://youtu.be/L6QCcPRZpfw
thanks so much!! it was a blast watching you play through it on stream. really fun watching someone enjoy the game so much :))
I deleted C:\\System32.
The theme is such a fun implementation of retrofuturism, I love it, the presentation is top notch, the game looks and sounds great and the mix is super consistent. Besides the game is fun to play. The dungeon offers some cool puzzle sequences, as someone who can leave unsatisfied when there's no actual enemy I was very happy when Clippy appeared and I specially enjoyed the game from there.
My only caveat would be that I thought movement was a bit rigid, you have to time your presses precisely if you want it to feel good. Don't get me wrong it's far from ridiculous.
Thanks for sharing!
thank you!! yep i agree, i learned about movement buffering after the jam ended so i would have added that in retrospect. glad you appreciated clippy, the most terrifying enemy ever conceived!
Lovely presentation; the art is excellent and I appreciated the numerous throwbacks and references to days gone past. The retrofuturism in your case is a portmanteau of the word than really the spirit of the sub-genre, but with that being said, many others have come up with their own intepretation so it's all ok. And yes, you have dragons :D.
The combat is great, took me a little bit of time to figure out how to correctly kite and CC Clippy, but i'm grateful for the regular respawn points to not make retrying unfairly abrasive.
I did encounter a freeze right at the end of the game when I was dousing a firewall. I wasn't able to dump any crash logs / nothing was printing in the console, and Firefox was screaming at me that the browser was slowing down, so I think I hit an infinte loop, but couldn't debug it anymore. Thankfully Local Minimum has shared his playthrough so I was able to see what missed.
This game was recommended to me and I wasn't dissapointed. The art, design, sound and nostalgia is all wonderful and I absolutely won't count the small technical snafu agaisnt you. Thank you, I had alot of fun.
thank you so much!! shame about the freeze, i've seen it a couple times now but have struggled to replicate it, i'll keep digging though. glad you enjoyed it!!
Alright so I must say that even with a problematic camera position causing some friction in the crawling, that I enjoyed this game that much and it played so well with that handicap! That says a whole lot about the overall quality of the game!
Great visuals, nice soundtrack, and even if I would have wanted some parts be taken a bit further to their sort of logical conclusion, I’m still very positive about the game. And it shows you were having fun and poured love into what you were making too…
More detailed comments, critique and explanations about the camera thing and more in the play-through:
thanks so much for recording your playthrough and for the detailed feedback!! i'm so glad you enjoyed it despite our noob mistake with the camera :))
That was epic. This just confirms that clippy is a jerk. I tried to just run through the fire a few times before I realized you could talk to the blue guys and click on the prompts to buy upgrades. I love all the different windows themed tiles.
thank you!! yea clippy is a bit of a menace lol. thanks for playing :))
This was a really cool one. Visually, it was pure nostalgic joy and the mechanics were unique enough that I was drawn in. It could have used a couple of tooltips about spending energy, dying and respawning... but once I understood what was happening, I had a blast.
yea i agree, we wanted to balance avoiding too much hand holding with still giving enough to figure out what's going on, the MSN fellas give some tips but maybe we should have done more. thanks for playing :))
The presentation for this one is really top notch! Loved the little pre 2000 details like clippy! Good nostalgia trip thank you :D
thanks so much!! glad you enjoyed :))
I really like the visual style and idea, also love the wordplay on the designs. And the DOOOM!!
thank you so much!! we spent a lot of time on the visuals so im glad you appreciated them :)
That flag being a bomb and not a goal of some sorts is evil lol!
The brick wall blocker guys were a good idea.
thanks for playing!! and yea that section is a minesweeper reference but if you're not familiar it might be a bit confusing lol
I am not really so keen on your interpretation of retrofuturism, but there were dragons AND elemental rock, paper, scissors, so mooooore than enough. As a nerd from the 80s and 90s I loved the references to DOS prompts, Minesweeper, multiple Windows screensavers. The game was a complete experience with a nice leveling system, “NPCs” and cleverly implemented enemies. There were even some story bits and a nice outro. The graphics maybe a bit crude and the movement could be better, but the music is spot on and the 4:3 aspect ratio fits the theme nicely. Well done :)
thanks so much!! yea i agree it's not really true retrofuturism but we thought it was a fun enough idea that we'd just do it anyway. glad you enjoyed so many aspects of it!!
out of curiosity what would make the movement better? we didn't come in to this super familiar with the genre so weren't too sure what "good" feeling movement is like, would be nice to know how we could have done it better :)
I already played a couple of other games, so maybe I am already remembering the movement wrong, but I think your game does not buffer the next command. As in I move forward and press rotate left just as the forward movement is ending. Many other submissions will register that and will turn the player left. In your game the command goes into the void. That is not gamebreaking or anything, but having buffering smoothes out the gameplay.
ah yes i remember that was something i noticed playing legend of grimrock but i forgot to add it!! good point, should have done that. thank you!
