Snail life

Nothing quite like playing your own game jam submission on the in-game phone of someone else's submission! There is just so much here, like the snail news, the duct-tape banana reference, plus the lifeline of gaining money through mobile games. Fantastic Job!

What everyone says. Amazing!

The different snail houses are so cute!

Playing other games inside your games is crazy.

8 ball snail seems busted, i wonder if it was supposed t randomize, like an 8 ball would, and only 50/50 go turbo.

I saw a music slider, but heard no music, assumed it's unfinished, saw other people complementing the music though on the main itch io page, not sure what happened, cannot get any BGM to play, only SFX.

It was really fun to get my snail to lvl 30 though and watch him fly. The pixel art is charming and the snail variety is awesome :D My favorite is the frog.

Very well executed game with a simple but fun loop.

I talked about it a bit with Quinten of the dev team on Discord. But this game is absolutely crazy in terms of everything like visuals and overall mechanics. The main mechanics are quite simple and easy to play, but the part in which you can play other games from the in-game phone really honestly captures the feeling and actions of gambling addictions.

Really well done and well-deserved of high praises.

Really cool game, and I can't believe you can play other games inside of your game, that's a really cool feature.  And it was my best way to earn money at first, so I could buy a better snail and won some racings, it's really cool how many different snails you drew to your game, I liked the cat lol. I think I would enjoy more if we have a music, but I played other game and the bg music stayed in background while playing your game itself, which was good for break the silence. Congrats for your game

Very cool game! I'm curious about the code behind who will win the race! I can totally see this being on IOS!

Also, no way you can play other games in this game on the smartphone! That's awesome XD

Thanks for playing!

Games in games is some HTML trickery :P Was really fun getting some of the community together to get a lot of jam games in the phone.

Overall: I like the concept and setting of the game; it kinda reminds me of the movie “Turbo”, from Dreamworks. The races are rewarding when you win, but I found it hard to find room to experiment with how little money I’m left with after buying my first snail.

Hits:

  • The concept and setting are immaculate. I can see this becoming a commercial idle game by tweaking it here and there.
  • The visuals are really good, and there’s enough snail variety to keep the races interesting.
  • The detail of being able to go to other people’s games FROM THE PHONE IS ABSOLUTELY CRAZY! Great work!

Opportunities:

  • I found it interesting that it’s possible to bet against your own snail; what’s more: I found it necessary to bet against your own snail in the early game in order to win money. IMO, I think that there are two paths here: either the snail training part is taken out of the equation so that it makes sense to bet against yourself, OR snail “leagues” are introduced to allow early-game snails to win and prevent you from losing before even starting (or maybe there’s a third path, they’re just suggestions after all).
  • I think that adding a close-up + slo-mo animation when two snails are close to finishing the race at the same time would add some excitement to the race!
  • Some background music for the race would have helped feel more connected to the event, but I understand that time constraints are heavy in jams.

I absolutely LOVE this game. The snails are so funny and cute. The days passing away in the background just adds to the whole thing. Amazing job!

Wow this unbelievable. Great job guys, I'm super impressed with this!! And so much fun!!

As already mentioned
Betting on a cookies race >> Betting on a snails race (jk lol, I was just surprised when I found out there was another game based on betting on a race but a snail race in the works xD)

But MAN is this a cool game, Especially the visuals! (Also I noticed the normal map lighting hiding in plain sight ) Like there are SOO many designs and types of snails.
But I kinda felt like that was all, like they all looked different (atleast their shells) but they didnt bring alot to the game, their sheer quantity kinda made them forgettable (Not saying they were bad at all tho, they really looked amazing! Especially the goofy ones lmao like that one snail with a person on its back farting T-T)
Though this isnt really a negative point as its clear that making all of them memorable wasnt the point/objective of the game.

Speaking of gameplay (not the other games stuff for now, just this game). Its fun at first but if you dont play other games while racing it can definitely get repetitive. Although the power up mechanic with feeding them cookies was a very welcome change!

Coming to the "Special" mechanic.. just wow xD
The funniest thing to me was that you can play snail racing INSIDE snail racing xD and play another game inside THAT snail racing.. That was just epic lmfao

Also i do wish  this had some music, I think lack of it also contributed  to the races feeling a bit bland
But I think i do get why it is so, I mean having music from 2 games together would be a real mess, but maybe you couldve muted this games music when another game was on screen (maybe?)

Overall I still think this was a really great game, especially on the game inside a game part. But even taking that aside, the art and visuals were also really cool

You guys did a really great job with this one! :D

Developer(+1)

we had issues with muting Iframes and opted out of bg music since we didn’t have time to debug the music of ours and the games within games.

Thanks for playing yeah snailception is pretty fun. If you needed more money you could go in and do snail game in snail game and play those games haha

Developer(+1)

Snail game, in snail game, in snail game is a pretty meta way to get multiple gambles going at once whilst earning passive money :P XD XD.

The way it works is by interacting with an extra bit of html we injected into the build. Godot has a js bridge that works bidirectional and I caught the events on the HTML end of it.

The games in games part was possible by embedding the iframes of other community members into that bit of HTML.

Sadly, because of browser policies & cross origin magic I'm not going to go indepth in- we can not mute / unmute the entries made by others. So it could be a bit jarring if 2 bgm's played at once.

In hindsight we could have just muted our own bgm if you had the phone open, but ohwell- maybe later. :D

Thanks for playing and providing feedback.

But still, it is soo surreal to play a whole ass game INSIDE this one and having it not just as a side gimmick but also integrated with the game and its mechanics, hats off to you for pulling that off lmao.

Actually I did hear about this when you were doing it but my game was not ready at all by then (tbh I had to use the extra 48 hrs to fix ALOT of bugs xD). But I didnt know it was gonna be a jam entry too xD

Ngl Id have loved to have my game playable inside it aswell, but oh well, too late now with the uploads locked

But I still think it was better to have atleast some music while playing even if it was other's games. Cuz if they were muted it would be awfully quiet imo (Especially in games where the audio feedback was more prominent). So it IS a win win ig

Again tho, great job you guys!

The pixel art and all of the little details are lovely!! So many different snail designs (was one of them a soot sprite snail from  Ghibli? haha) The news articles and games in the phone are great, and the day/night cycle was really funny

I think the addition of music when the snails were racing would've been nice to see, but other than that well done!

Hey our games are pretty similar! Great minds think alike! Game is a lot of fun. No idea how you were able to get other game jam games to work on the phone lol, that's insane. My only nitpick is that I wish there was music!

Developer

Thanks for playing !

I'll need to check yours out too then <3

If you are interested in how we got it to work , enweave and I were planning on writing it in a devlog. Or you can always hop by the Jamlytics vc if you want a more visual explanation.

very in depth for a jam game. quibble race from ufo50 is very similar, except they have an option to take out a loan to jumpstart the game. I struggled with progression, and I thought that might be nice touch. well done!

I enjoyed each loop from the gameplay! This is the same addiction that i feel when playing uma musume haha, but i can't get away from the betting (Iam screwed!!! and couldn't pay my debt). And how sick is that phone that can play other game as well! But i think music and sound effect will build a strong feedback and experience. Great game man!!!

Developer

Black magic phone brought to you by the powers of HTML & pure dedication to the craft :P

I do agree we needed some extra music & sfx going.

Happy you guys gave perms for including it :P

Is a fun lil' community interaction! <3

This game is really fun, and it was a such a good idea to include games within the phone to pass the time (who would've guessed snail racing takes a long time.) I did spend most of the game playing games on the phone while betting on the likely winners. Nice Game!

Developer

The phone worked as intented :D

Glad you enjoyed playing :)

I literally love the details in this game: those icons on the phone aren't just placeholders, you can actually click and activate those app. The SnailMail is so detailed design (love the "Snail Times"), and it is so cool when you can play on your phone inside your phone. Also the cutscene of snails racing made me laugh. Well done!

Developer

glad you read the snailmail, most people dont even notice the other apps haha!

Cool game, I really loved the art for the snails! I won with the banana art on the wall snail! Instead of buying a bunch of snails, I focused on getting money and paying off my debt. The power-ups seemed random for who they went to, which felt a bit strange, but it still makes sense since you can play snail racing within snail racing ,  so betting on power-ups within a betting game fits the theme. Great game, congrats!

Developer

thanks for playing! Yes the power ups you were risking it to hopefully not help the other snails or slow your own down. Banana snail is pretty fast!
