Had fun playing this. Really liked the building/atmosphere and the crunchy shots and blood splatter!

OK; you gotta, when doing FPS:es, include an "Invert Y"-option. I play goofy and I just die.

Other than that, incredible work.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Very good point, I will make sure to include that in the future for all 3D stuff we make :)

Developer

Update: added it now :)

The aesthetics are peak and gibbing is so much fun. After a little bit of time playing, I realized this reminds me a lot of call of duty zombies "training", where you'd get zombies to line up for faster killing, but as a game! I noticed 2 minor hiccups; it seemed performance lagged a bit when cleaning up decals at the end of a round. I also noticed when framerates dipped, I was able to fly into the air with my shotgun kickback, which to be fair, was extremely fun. Only noticed because I played for a decent chunk of time and found it quite enjoyable! Only gameplay thing that tripped me up is I thought explosions hurt me, so I tended to stay away from zombies, which was hard since the shotgun has damage falloff. Once I figured out I'm fine, it was all good.

Developer(+1)

Hehe, shotgun flying is a great “secret mechanic”. I believe once you get 3 upgrades, you can pretty much fly around at your leisure. Bonus points if you find out where to escape the map to get out of bounds ;)

As for the decals: yep, turns out setting the alpha blend mode on hundreds of objects at the same time is expensive! Learned something new :D

Good point about the explosions. We deliberately made them non-hurting, but that should be signposted better in-game somehow!

Thank you very much for playing the game, and I’m very happy you enjoyed it so much <3

Super impressive! A fun game loop, and it was satisfying to herd the zombies together an get a big chain reaction.

I probably should have run the native build but it was playable in Vivaldi/Win 11 until around wave 8. Then I had to turn the splatter + bits + audio off to finish.

Very cool watching this come to life and getting better over the course of the jam. The best entry I have played/tested so far. I observed some slight performance hiccups and I kinda want to improve the blood particles but this is a 10/10 jam result in my book. Thanks for open sourcing this! Overall a very inspiring entry.

Submitted(+2)

i watched your progress in the jam channel (#tech) and you pulled it all together quite nicely! the player speed is just right for corralling the swarm while remaining in danger. good call to go the doomy shotgun route without reloading. please add a double barrel (super shotgun) for V2.0 =)

i was surprisingly able to play this in the browser on an M2 MacBook, but the final boss was my trackpad. will give it another go with a mouse later!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Oh wow, cool that a MacBook can run this in the browser :D
Yeah, reloading the weapon would totally have been an anti-feature!

Submitted(+1)

It captures the old school FPS feel so well I instinctively was trying to bunnyhop!

Submitted(+1)

i was very happy i could bunny hop over the shoulders of the swarm!

I can't believe you made a full 3D boomer shooter for the jam! Incredible! I feel like the hardest thing to get right in shooters in the gun feeling good to shoot and you guys nailed it! I was having good fun just killing zombies, but then I saw roguelike upgrades!

I did find a degenerate strategy against the big guys, by getting  close to them they lock into their attack animation, and then you can back away faster than they can attack, so you can sort of stun lock them.

I'd love to know more about how you designed the 3D environment.

10/10 best game I've played of the jam so far.

Developer

Thank you so much! This is high praise, considering that I absolutely loved your submission and the one from last jam :D I think the strategy against the big guys is legit, as that forces you to move in a specific way that might be in conflict with how you want to guide the swarm. Though we probably could have made his attacks a bit faster ;)

I pinged the others who designed the gunplay and created the 3D environment, I bet they are happy to hear this!

Developer

We built the environment in Trenchbroom. Jan showed me the first few maps from Quake and I tried to replicate them a bit :)

> I feel like the hardest thing to get right in shooters in the gun feeling good to shoot and you guys nailed it!

Thanks! The hardest part was having the sound align with what it felt like to me was happening in the game at the same time. I simply iterated over it by adjusting the sound snippets (shooting and reload sound of the shotgun) until it felt intuitive for when I am able to shoot again. I hate it when I click because the game feels like I can shoot again, and nothing happens. I did this all with the model of the gun still being a hand and the animation being a punch into the air :D I'm a bit of a sucker for gunplay as I have a few thousand hours from a few years ago in CS:GO, so I do have strong opinions, glad you liked the outcome as well! :~)

The shooting animation was all Jan Hohenheim, so he should be a little less humble about it ;)

Thanks so much for the praise!

Awesome game, super fun and surprisingly strategic!

Finished in 11:02! That was really fun, I honestly have no complaints. Great work!

I wanted to try a good old boomer shooter, but unfortunately, I won't be able to rate this for now. I tried it on the web and native win build, but the framerate was too low. I'm on a laptop with an integrated GPU, but it's no slouch. I can run a lot of 3d indie games.

Developer (1 edit)

Have you tried the performance options in the settings? You can disable splatters and gibs. If so, then this is on us :D

Submitted(+1)

It's not the splatters and gibs I think. It's before any zombie even attacks. Maybe there's some extra demanding GPU effects that could be toggle-able, but I'm not certain which.

Developer(+1)

Huh, interesting! Now I also wonder what it could be. Anyways, thanks for trying!

Submitted(+1)

I observed this as well with a 5070ti and 7950x3d. It happens in between rounds, I only noticed because frames dropped from stable 155-160 to below 100 which is noticable to me, the game seems a bit choppy for a few secs before the new wave spawns. I don't think it's noticable on the web as much though or with lower refresh rate monitors + mid/high end PC's it shouldn't be an issue either.

Submitted(+2)

If you want I can check what systems are causing it when I find some time.

Developer

That would be really really appreciated :)

Submitted(+2)

Very nice game, I can tell a lot of effort went into the little details in this. Everything felt very punchy and weighty, and the kickback from the gun added some nuance to the movement. The level design was also great, lots of different ledges and platforms to make a dramatic final stand on.

The tiny zombie is a cute, cool FPS game. The native build on Windows lags slightly but doesn't affect gameplay~

Developer

Thanks a bunch! I was very entertained when I made the sounds faster and higher pitched for the little guys :D

it has been a while since i played anything fps ... was a lot of fun. tho game is unplayable on web, and still laggy (for me) on windows, and controls are a bit floaty too...

Still that was a great game, reminded me of Serious Sam.

Developer

Thanks for playing! Is it better when adjusting the performance options in the settings? :)

Submitted

actually i investigated a little bit. And here is the trouble ... I'm playing on my main monitor which is 4k, with a 1080. Most games are ok with that, but that's like 4 times more pixels to fill than regular 1980x1024. I had my daughter play the game (yes it's that good), she played it in on the other screen (regular size this one), and it was silky smooth. It's not the first game i have this issue with, some of them go around the issue by rendering on a smaller image, then displaying that scaled up. Still, the game is nice, but i think that kind of fidelity should work at 4k, tho maybe not for a jam game =)

Developer

Ooooh that’s really good to know, thanks! Will definitely try to figure out how to serve 4k monitors better next time. Seriously, this is super helpful, thanks a bunch for checking again :D

Very pleasing to gather them all in chunks and eliminating them en masse. Great foxtrot showcase! The only thing I really wanted is to kick, because once you are rounded - you are done. F

Developer(+1)

Thanks! You can actually jump, look down and then shoot to get enough vertical boost to escape :D But adding a kick that primarily pushes enemies away from you is actually a great idea, that should totally have been a feature.

(+2)

৻( •̀ ᗜ •́ ৻) I completely missed that. Niiiice

Submitted(+3)

Very nice, love the particles and decals staying on walls behind them! Well done

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Those were really fun to implement, immediately made the game feel and look so much better :)

Submitted(+4)

As a fan of Quake and other “boomer shooters” this is definitely up there as one of my favourite entries. Very nice showcase for Bevy’s capabilities, but also just a fun game. I’m a little sad that the glitch my friend discovered in one of the earlier builds seems to be gone. It was possible to fly by picking up a barrel under your feet.

Developer

Hehe, I also enjoy jank like that. Should have left it as an upgrade ;)

Submitted(+2)

This was a great concept, and love the fact you accomplished this in just a week! It was way too laggy for me on web, which is fine

Developer

Thanks! Did it run fine on native? :)

Submitted(+2)

It worked great on native, a bit laggy when there was a large horde of zombies around the "boss" one. It did take time to download/unzip but that's probably cause my PC is a potato

Submitted(+3)

Strong entry here! I like it a lot, the game is fun, without lag (native version). The map is big and pretty, bravo!

Developer(+1)

Thanks :3
