Your game is beautiful and I'm glad I was able to sneak in one last rating.
The two lines of spacing for the text was brilliant. It made reading effortless. It also didn't hurt that the dialogue and descriptions were charming as hell.
Great submission!
Is there a secret thing I can do with the black seed?
I loved the art in this. Really good use of the limited pixels.
I'm personally not a fan of the 1 bit graphics game's in general, but in the spirit of the jam, I'm testing all the games of those who also tested mine's. However with your game you could show a good ammount of details not only through visuals but with the story and I liked the experience. Obviously it needed some music and sound effects but I saw your replies to other comments and understood that using an oldtime engine to make the game has some limitations. And lastly I guess the story could be a little more developed at the end to become more clear. Good job!
Very interesting approach to the jam in general and I enjoy the 1 bit graphics which some how still capture plenty of details. I only wish there was some sound/music to make it more engaging for me. Story focused or mainly story driven games are a bit of a challenge in the "keep me interested" department unless there's music/sound to compliment the mood. Overall, nicely done.
The game looks really awesome, the fact that the the interactable objects and the backgound were easily distinguishible made for an smooth gameplay and choosing a font in pixelart for a pixelart game is appreciated as its one of the mistakes that newbies don´t do.
Cool game! I'm still trying to understand the story though
It's a nice little story, and although we didn't understand how it relates to the topic, we enjoyed
Very interesting, it's rare to see story-driven entries in game jams :)
Really liked the mood and aesthetics, so it's really sad the game didn't have any audio. Also, I don't really see any connection to the theme :/
Overall, really interesting submission, atmospheric from the start and enjoyable to play. Good job :)
Wow beatiful sprite art :o I love story driven games in gamejams so this was really fun :D The only negative thing i can say is lack of sounds and music :/ it would be cool to hear footsteps fire cat meowings etc. Overall i can clearly see that you gave your love to this game well done :D
Not sure how it fits with the theme. It looks nice though and the story has potential. Sadly, I think I accidentally skipped some lines. Also, when that monster appears it isn't clear what to do as you are locked in and walking into it gives the same few "uninviting" lines for a while. Maybe have it walk faster than the player so even if the player doesn't get what needs to happen to move forward it will still happen?
Yeah I getchu! Thanks for the feedback. A lot of what I could was EXTREMELY limited because of the engine being a modded hack of an old engine that's pretty limited as is. So I couldn't do audio or much of anything, even the monster appearing and attack is all based in hidden room switches to make it feel like it's doing something substantial. I'm looking into using Godot next as an engine to expand this into something fuller. I'll gladly take the suggestions into the future with me!
As for the theme, it was that of progressing through the failure as a Forest Ranger, failing to save the forest, ("only you can prevent wildfires") and through injury to save yours and two others souls in the end.
As a Godot user i strongly recommend it for 2D games, hope you remake it in the engine and have fun while doing it
Nice atmospheric game, feelt really retro :D whihch is a good thing. I liked it
Retro is always a fun place to explore! Thank you so much <3
Very nice! The story was great! Very 80's scifi-esque. The graphic also reminded me or an old DOS game. Good job!
YEAH Glad someone got the 80's vibe, thank you so much!
Really liked the game, visuals and story fit very well. But with some sounds and music it be a whole other level.
And one question: How did it fit the theme? For me it was an ongoing progress without winning or loosing, some kind of novel :)
You should consider switching engines. With this storytelling this good, with so much limitation, the sky is the limit if using unity ;)
The theme was that of progressing through the failure as a Forest Ranger, failing to save the forest, ("only you can prevent wildfires") and through injury to save yours and two others souls in the end. Success in the failure. Also yeah I've been looking into Godot and Unity heavily this past week! Thank you so much
If only there was sound, this was so cool. Nailed the visuals!
Thank you! (Limited engine didn't allow audio, but I'm moving on to a different one!)
For a three day jam, in my opinion this is a LOT of work you put into, and great choice for the graphics aswell!
The story in my opinion was great, however i can't really feel the atmosphere of the game too much, probably because of the lack of music and sound effect, however that is probably just me
However, for a three day jam with a super limited engine this is briliant
Thank you so much! I had to work 8 hour shifts each day of the jam but as soon as I got home I was cracking out work like a crazy person, I'm so glad you like the graphics and story <3
Currently experimenting in a fully fleshed out engine to continue the work on this game!
Great Game! Somehow scared me more than every Horror game I played in the last 3 years. May or may not be because I played it homealone in the middle of the night haha.
I also liked the Graphics. You dont see 1 bit graphics all that often these days.
Ayyy! I was wondering if it was actually any spooky, after releasing it I got one friend to play (only one to react this way) who was desperately avoiding the spooky part, he's like, "Nuh-uh no no, nope, anything else, can I leave? No, great, wonderful. Ugh alrigh- AHH" and I lost my mind xD Thank you, thank you, I hope to expand on it post jam in a new engine!
Very cool game! the artwork was nice. The storytelling was also well done. I really enjoyed the 1-bit art style with the creative use of shifting the color partway though, really added to the atmosphere and mood of the game! I think some sound effects would be nice, but it seems like you already addressed that. Also the game seemed a little bit laggy (like the player would not move right away when I pressed WASD) to me but I have a weird computer so idk if it was just on my end. Either way great game Jam submission. Good job!
Sorry it was laggy! With how simple the game is in terms of processing power I wouldn't expect it to lag but I'm sure it's totally possible xD Thank you so much for the kind words, there's a hidden third color shift if anyone can find the secret items and Easter Egg room, I believe only one person has found it.
pros: I like the retro art style, and the story is really good too!
cons: the way it switched from side view to top down was a little weird, and it could have used a little more polish (like deleting the black box behind the player)
but all in all good game, I enjoyed playin it
Thanks for the feedback and kind words yo, glad people like the story and art! (My main focus due to a super limited engine).
If you're willing to explain what it was about the perspective shift you didn't like I'd love to know! As for the black box, that's a part of the limitations in Bitsy, no layers, so you're just constantly replacing a tile you touch with occasional conditional programing for items/sprites.
it's just that the side view kind of made it feel like a platformer (even though there was no jumping) and than the top down view is usually used for rpg's. so switching between the perspectives almost made it feel like it was switching back and forth between two genres that just didn't mesh well together.(kind of like when you eat a grapefruit and than drink milk, the acidic taste of the grapefruit just ruins the taste of the milk) I hope this makes sense, and that you aren't offended by it, that's just how it felt to me.
It looks sooo good! It's so atmospheric and dark and I love the color coding you used! Great job!
I'm not a super big fan of the *does something* writing style, but besides that I think that the dialogue is written pretty well! I enjoyed the characters and how you fleshed them out in such a short play time!
And I'd love to play a version with some soundeffects. I think even some tiny sounds could improve the atmosphere a lot and make it even more scary!
Thank you so much!! I hope to really flesh this out in a less limited engine where I can use sound effects and spend more time putting in animations instead of writing the *does something* style <3 Thanks for your feedback and kind words
Good job on the art, it looks really great, and the dialog is quite well written, like they have their own established inside jokes that don't get explained to the audience which makes them seem more alive. Sound and animations are lacking, but you already addressed that. I also see people already recommended you play Firewatch, your game also reminded me of it.
I gotta your comment on how I wrote them is the nicest thing anyone has ever said and I'm so glad you got it and enjoyed it. Thank you, and yeah I'm excited to give Firewatch a try! (My main inspirations being TAZ: Amnesty)
