I like the idea! I had an issue where I could not lose hearts (or I was doing it wrong haha). Maybe a more interactive tutorial could help. Other than that, this is really neat :)
Nice concept! The game looks fun. I think you could tweak the tutorial a bit to make it more obvious when you have to attack the hero to get it to counter you. Good job!
To be honest, I could not remember which attack I had to connect.
In the end, the only attack I connected was the Heavy against the Quick attack to let the hero win.
Another thing is that it took me a while to realize that I was supposed to attack in the "after-attack" state of the hero.
Other than that. It was a fun game.
Good job!
I liked your concept, it made the game fun. Your animations and sprites looked really good, I loved the Gameboy style palette. There's a glitch where the hero gets pushed out of bounds.
Cool game, I enjoyed the rock-paper-scissors mechanic for combat, I thought that was really creative and worked pretty nicely here. I like how it played into the topic. I enjoyed the attack animations, they all looked really nice and fit with the style well.
If you wanted to improve, I suggest adding particle FX to the characters when they move to create footprints or smoke. I also suggest always having the hero attack towards the player, my hero stood by the left wall and kept attacking towards the wall.
Now while it's absolutely buggy, I got a big ol soft spot in my heart for buggy games and I still enjoyed my time, I think the concept is amazing and with more time troubleshooting and coding, you'll have something real special here!
Thanks for playing, and sorry it was so broken for you. To take damage you need to wait until after the "hero's" attack and then if you hit him with the correct(or I guess wrong?) attack right away, then the "hero" will quickly counter attack which should hurt you. I think its way too confusing for how little it is explained in game. The glitch outside the map bug is on me for hardly playtesting before submission. I kind of know how to fix it, but I will just wait until after the rating period at this point.
i could not find a way to lose hearts. But still! cool idea
Yes I think a lot of people were having that problem. I did a pretty bad job explaining this in the game. You are supposed to wait for the "hero" to finish his attack. Then for a short period of time the "hero" leaves himself open to attack. If you then hit the "hero" with the attack that is weak to the attack he just finished, he will quickly dodge out of the way and counterattack which hurts the player. To make it so that you can not just run into the "hero's" attacks to kill yourself, there is a system where you automatically dodge most of the attacks from the "hero".
I think the fact that you can easily hut the "hero" by attacking him anytime, not just right after he attacks, makes it even more confusing to the player that they can't be hurt by normal attacks from the "hero". The Idea was supposed to be that the "hero" was a lot weaker than the boss/player so it is actually challenging to lose the fight.
Just writing this out though I definitely see how confusing the idea is haha, but oh well next time I need to make sure to more clearly explain the game mechanics.
Interesting take on rock paper scissors :D The tutorial is a bit long and could have been more interactive. Also the attacks are too quick to react you should slow them donw :d Other then these it was fun nice job :D
Note: I would be happy if you could check out my game as well :d
Nice way to implement the jam theme! I encountered quite a bug, where the hero landed outside of the arena and didn't come back :S
Oh that....no that is supposed to happen. You see I wanted to fit the theme of playing with expectations so a made a game state where you cannot win or lose!
Haha just kidding that is a bug.
I am currently trying to fix this issue thank you for bringing it up! If anyone else is reading this then try pressing Tab if you or the enemy get stuck outside the map. This should restart the battle.
I can't play Gles3 (Godot) games, so I just gave 5 stars to ya. :( Thanks for playing my game!
I've never seen anyone turn rock paper scissors into an exciting and fun game.
Unfortunately i came across a bug that threw the hero out of the map when i made my ranged attack.
Overall this game is fun to play with a nice concept.
The shifumi-counter attack system is cool. Nice little and simple game. Well done.
Noice :D I like it maybe a little anoying that you have to make him win, But well it is also kinda clever.
A very clever idea of using rock-paper-scissors mechanic for a real-time "fighting" game.
I quite liked the sounds, you did a good job with picking them!
As others mentioned, the game needs a way to skip the tutorial, or the tutorial itself should be more interactable instead of just an empty room.
I see why you implemented dodge that is activated when you just do nothing, but it just makes it harder to lose. In my humble opinion, if the "player" had better AI it would be more interesting to fight.
Overall, nice job! The idea of being the villain is not unique but the idea of counterattacks is very clever!
Thank you for the feedback! Yes I agree the current ai (hardly even deserves the name haha) could definitely be improved. The way it is now I think is a bit too random. I think I will update to at least make sure he attacks in the direction of the player because I don't like when he just attacks the wall. I might also look into adding a couple more states into his movement or something so he is more reactive to the player. Anyways now you got me thinking of all kinds of ideas so thank you for that!
I think it's an interesting take on the topic with a cool mechanic! It took me a bit to understand what to do, but when I got it it was kinda hard to pull of. It's a bit fast and the moves are not very intuitiv (which attack is weak over another). But I like the idea and the presentation a lot!
Thanks for playing! After submitting I showed this game to one of my friends who immediately asked why I did not make the attacks something like water, fire and grass attacks so that it would be more clear which attack is strong against which. I wish I had thought of that haha, but yea it could definitely be more clear!
The game looks great and cohesive, sound is great, it's even fun except is severely hindered by the lengthy dialogue to explain the game. And really not sure it's too fun to just let the hero win because I think you technically don't have to do any attacks to counter him do you... but the combat mechanics are good as they are, even if you don't have the rock paper scissors element.
Thank you for the honest feedback! Yes I agree the dialog was a bit too slow. Lesson learned let players press something to skip through dialog faster! Actually if you try just standing around and letting the hero hit you, you will automatically dodge the attacks and take no damage. You need to hit the hero with the correct attack right after he attacks you, and then the hero will dodge and quickly counterattack which will hurt you. Its confusing so I definitely needed to do a better job explaining the mechanics. That's a design flaw in my part.
I like this game! Great gameplay! Good job!
Please check my game as well ;)
This game was really charming, and I really like the tutorial guy. I was still a bit confused on how to "win" the game :D great job!
Thanks glad you enjoyed it! I am racking my brain trying to think of a way to update the game to be more clear without straight up telling the player how to win haha. Seems like people were having trouble understanding, which means I did not do a good job designing the battle clearly! Good feedback that will help improve my design choices in the future!
