The idea is quite captivating! The only thing you maybe should work on is the map and adding a fun feel to the scrolls... although the style is very Roman-like. Liked it!

An interesting theme inspired by ancient Rome and well executed. I really enjoyed playing it!

Congratulations on achieving such a complex design! I haven't understood yet how placing in the grid affects anything so far.

Developer

Thanks a lot! Yeah, the map/grid is one of those things that I had some plans for, but had to cut in order to make it in time :/

Loved the thematic choice! good job - I feel like this game has a lot of potential, one thing I would have improved is the readability of the cards and maybe a little less WOT for the tutorial and a bit more action, I would love to see it evolve after the jam!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much for kind words :)

The readability would be better if I chose better resolution and allow fullscreen, but that's a valuable lesson for future jams. The WOT in tutorial is horrendous and the more I look at it the more I'm asking myself what was I even thinking :)

Fun game! It is similar to the one that we made! Liked the ambientation in the ancient rome.

I thought it was really good, I like the deck builder and central mechanic of choosing an active card to play and getting passive benefits from the discards. At first I thought it wasn't quite tied to the theme but it just focuses on "built" more than "scale".  From a UI perspective I found the cards a bit hard to read sometimes, maybe just because of the browser window.

Developer

Thanks for playing and for the feedback. Yep, the readability is sub-par thanks to a weird resolution scale I chose (and therefore disallowing fullscreen), a mistake that I will hopefully avoid in the future :)

I really liked the game and the graphics are really nice! The balancing was pretty  good, but aqueduct and fountain are a bit OP. I do think the connection with the theme is not very strong, but still a very good game.

This is remarkable for such a short development period.  How did you balance the numbers in such a short time?  Did you just guess them and leave it at that or did you do something more calculated?

One minor thing I have to mention is the use of a square screen resolution.  The game would have looked just fine in widescreen.  Also, some of the text is quite small.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing :)
Yeah, widescreen with fullscreen option would've been better, but I started with square(ish) resolution for no real reason and it was too much to change later since everything was holding up on ductape.

As for the numbers and balancing. I started with an excel sheet but soon gave up, because it was much faster to just guess and then run a couple of tests and tweak stuff here and there. I'm actually shocked that people find it balanced. Shocked and humbled :)

This game is AWESOME! It's so polished and fun! I wanted more levels to play :D

I really didn't expect to see a full strategy game in this jam, but I did and im happy for it. When i understood what i was doing it was really fun.

Art + SFX/music are really nice.

For the gameplay, I didn't really understand. It's better to avoid wall of text especially in any game (especially in a game jam). Just having a little sentence or better "show don't tell" for a tutorial is really the way to go ♥

really great application of a roman setting!

This is one of those games that makes me think “Why haven’t I seen a combination city-builder/deck-builder before?” They play so well together, but the concept still feels so original!

Lovely game on its own, really impressive for the timespan you submitted it in!(almost a whole day before the deadline :0). The theme link is a little loose. Mostly because the very thing you talk about in your answer of how it fits the theme is also coincidentally the part that, from what i have read from other comments, you have had to cut, unfortunate 😔. Though the card game design is really well done! In a future release I would love to be able to see what scroll I have coming and what ones I have already dealt with for even more advanced planning. With some more work this could be REALLY promising. Good stuffs!

Developer

Thanks for playing!
Yeah, you're totally right about the theme being a bit loose on that one. I kind of thought of it initially as a game about "building an empire" and even if I removed the map completely I would still think of it like that (in spirit at least). But yeah, mechanically it's far from other games in terms of theme adhesion. That's very valid feedback.

Very cool unique deck builder and I think the difficulty is really well balanced. I played through it once and succeeded in all levels except for the last one but I was always on the edge. Very nicely done!

Since GMTK 2021 i played all your entries, glad you joined the jam this year as well. I really like the concept of your game, although i had to figure out that the bottom values of each scroll affect my economy as well when not played out. I also liked that the game gives me time to think out strategically what to place in my city and which scroll to pick, to get the most value long term. I would like to see more synergies between scrolls, but i can understand that you didn't managed that within the time constraint. The synergies that are in the game, i enjoyed a lot tough! Also are there any benefits to where i place my buildings on the map?

Again i think you did an amazing job with this entry. Keep it up!

Developer(+1)

Hi! I remember your games from `21 and `22! Oh, man it really warms my heart to read comments like this, thank you so much :)
Thanks for the feedback as well I appreciate that very much. I'd love to add more synergies and more "wacky" cards and effects but at some point I settled on "a little boring but fairly balanced" which was a safer choice but definitely less cooler :D

As for the benefits to place buildings. I planned to, then I cut the scope, then at the very end I added small bonuses when similar (in function) buildings are placed near each other and then added a "secret" bonuses when a column is full and then when row is full (just for fun, knowing, that nobody will do that :D). But that's really not that much and a lot of people are pointing that out and all of them are right :)

I really like the idea of this game, a really unique take on the deck builder genre. Well done!

Submitted(+2)

Really well done, especially with the scaling aspect. Its not too easy, but doesn't hold your hand, making it great to replay and hopefully if seen expanded upon in the future. great work!

Submitted(+2)

Thank you, I had a great time with your game! You made me think of the Roman Empire today ahaha The game is addictive. While I usually don't like sketchy simplistic graphics, you managed to find the right balance

Submitted(+2)

Didn’t even notice how I got sucked in and blasted through all levels. So cool! Feeling of everything falling apart and you barely succeeding is always rewarding, good balancing!
