Oh, that was a cool little game.  I love the feel of the melee attack.  So satisfying, especially when you get two enemies with one stab.  Great game!

Developer

haha glad you found out you can stab two at once, it is pretty satisfying.

Thanks for playing.

Nice entry and the such a vast story was great to see

Submitted(+1)

Very full entry for a 10-day jam. I enjoyed playing it, well done!

Submitted(+1)

Wow you were really able to pack a huge amount of story into a small game, great job! I loved the art style, every fit together really nicely

Developer

Thanks very much for your great feedback, really appreciate it.

It was difficult to keep distance from the enemy because of the long hardening time after the attack.

The illustration has a nice taste. I like it.

I also like the dots.

Developer

Thanks for your feedback, we really appreciate it.

However I do not know what you are referring to say you say dots. Can you elaborate please?

Submitted(+1)

dots = pixel art
sorry, It was hard to understand because of the automatic translation.
Japanese call pixel art “dot pictures.

Developer

Oh I understand now. I didn't know you call them dots. I learn something new every day :)

Thanks for taking the time to use the translator to comment, I appreciate it.

Overall a very nice playing experience. Nice mechanics, Dialog system, sound effects. Nice story. Excellent Retro graphics. I liked how the compass guides the player to the next point of interest. Nicely paced, liked the first chapter which was more like a tutorial in practicing some of the game mechanics as things heat up in chapter 2 onwards. I also liked that the attack mode automatically changes from Melee to range attacks based on the distance from objects or enemies. Keep up the good work :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and thanks for your great feedback. I'm glad the compass helped you find your way, it's easy to get lost without it.

Oh yes Chapter 2 can get messy in a hurry if you don't quickly dispatch them.

If you proceed to the top of the map in Chapter 3 (either outside the building on the West side, or through the building on the North side) you will see a larger battle taking place, but you're not meant to fight in that one so be careful you don't get killed quickly when approaching.

Cheers

I like the story and the fact that you based it on real history. The story, mechanics, and visuals fit very well, overall, very well put together. I only felt the pace was a bit too slow at the beginning, but maybe that's because I get lost easily so I was a long time wandering around XD

It is a lot more than I would expect from a gamejam game, and I will play it again with more time after the jam. Congrats!!!

Developer(+1)

Thanks very much, so glad you liked it.

Yes the first chapter feels a bit empty, and with more time we would have filled it out with more NPCs and elements, but we do plan to work on it more once the Game Jam has finished :)

awesome!!! I'd like to play a final version of it as well :)

And if you need play testing during development, let me know.

Really clever way of using gameplay to re-enact the story! Having the different acts/chapters worked well to familiarise you with the environment before the combat starts. I liked the art style and character animations as well!

Developer(+1)

Thanks very much for playing the game and for your great feedback! Glad you enjoyed it.

Wow this was one of the best stories of all the submissions I have played, very cool that you based it on a historical last stand. The chapters with the questing system and the NPC dialogue boxes were all very well polished and executed. The sound effects really pushed the gameplay to five stars for me as I could easily tell and confirm my actions. Great game!

Developer

Splendid! Thanks for your great feedback, we really appreciate it.

Cool idea to make a historical game :)

Developer

Thanks very much for playing, glad you enjoyed it.

As a South African this theme really resonated with me and you've inspired me to go and read about it as its (maybe embarrassingly?) not one I'm too familiar with. I really like the questing approach to the game and the combat was actually pretty tough. Obviously, this is probably one of the best stories (maybe its actually the best story) that I've seen incorporated into this game jam so totally 5 stars there. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to have another go and see if I can survive a bit longer than I did last time (didnt expect to see the base overrun when I went to get that second medipack - was using that room as a bit of a chokepoint but maybe I should have just stayed there!!)

Developer(+1)

Wow thanks for the great feedback. I'm glad we inspired you to read up on the history behind the game. I hope you find it interesting.

Haha yes I hope you can make it to the end of the game. Don't forget in that room with the med pack, on chapter 2, you can break down the wall (t's in the description on the main game page) and use that to shoot through, it can be tricky to do but you can time it just right to shoot them as they come running past.

Have fun!

Very nice entry. I love the story.
When the player goes diagonally, he goes faster than when he goes up, down, left or right: I think you forgot to normalize the movement direction vector. Instead ogf going (1,1), it should go about (0.7, 0.7).

Anyway, very immersive story. Great pixel art too!

Developer

Thanks very much for playing, yes well spotted, the movement vector is not normalised, He also goes quicker when walking against walls.

Really appreciate your great feedback, so glad you enjoyed it.

Nice game. The art is nice but the map is feeling a little empty. The lack of background music help to enhance this emptiness

Developer

Thanks, yes a consequence of running out of time. We wish we could have had more NPCs to talk to and to fight along side.

We will add a lot more for the full version.

Submitted(+1)

Cool game! Love the aesthetic. Reminds me of some of the old Jurassic Park games. Also neat that it's based on actual historical events while still being a blast to play. Keep it up!

Developer

Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks very much for your feedback.

Nice look. Good objective system. Gritty.

Submitted(+1)

Cool game, I like how it felt like I was progressing by completing objectives. I wasn't very good at combat though. It truly was my last stand!

Developer

Thanks for your feedback, glad you enjoyed it.

haha, yes it is a bit difficult to get used to, firing is pretty precise but if you kite a few of them together you can bayonet many at the same time, but that also means they can all bayonet you.

Cheers

Just like the old movie Zulu! This feels pretty sophisticated in terms of the number of systems working together (story elements, objectives, various interactions and combat), which is really impressive. I loved the satisfying gunfire and the meaty stabbing SFX, I just wish there was some music or ambient sound in the background. I have to admit it took me an embarrassingly long time just to figure out how to leave that first room, which was frustrating and almost made me quit. Maybe, with more time at your disposal, a slightly more detailed step-by-step tutorial to walk you through getting to the ammo box on the other side of the base would be helpful. Finally, I appreciate that there is a (probably realistic, since they were single-shot rifles) cooldown time between shots, but it was frustrating not to be able to even move during that period. Overall, nice job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing, I'm' glad you enjoyed it.

I agree it needs a better explanation of how the mechanics work, but I'm glad you did work out how to get out in the end.

We appreciate all of your feedback, especially with regards to the reloading, where you're right, we were going for more realism there, perhaps in future versions we can have the player still moving during reload, albeit slowly.

Cheers

I really like the art and how the transitions feel really smooth. I would have to say the sounds are too loud, but other than that, it's a really cool game.

Submitted

Fun game that is pretty easy to get a handle on but not too easy to play to where it is boring. Like the art style too. Only recommendation is to lower the gun cooldown time.

It's great to see an historical last stand presented here! Loved the retro action-rpg feel, the chapter-by-chapter story presentation, and the throaty SFX of the rifle. Top marks -- which I had learned more history through games like these.
