The Linux version played fine on my machine using the PS3 controller.
As others have already mentioned, the music speeding up on lower health is a nice feature, giving good feedback. I like how the dashing is somewhat limited and the way it's shown.
The combat seemed a bit unbalanced at times, indeed. I could whack at a pair of bats several times for seemingly no effect and then kill them both with a single hit.
A minimap would be useful, it could be filled the more the player progresses.
I had an issue with accidentally breaking out of the game when I died, so this definitely needs some sort of safety switch..
I liked it.
The only problem for me was that the dialog boxes pop up out without anything I do and it's stopping me mid play (you can put something like press "T" to talk so the player talks then we wants to).
Another thing you can do to improve is to make an in game tutorial to let the player understand the controls and the goal of the game better
This is a pretty big game, and a well done one too! Really impressive for two weeks of work.
As feedback, I think it’s hard to get the range of the attacks, both for the protagonist and the enemies, so landing a hit and being safe is kind of difficult.
Very cool how the music changes based on health, that was a very nice touch. I liked the animations and the dash is fun. What I didn't like was taking damage before the enemies performed any animation, it made it very difficult to make progress and I died a lot. Still, this is a very full featured game! Well done!
This game has a cool vibe that I really like. Regarding the NPC dialogue: I wasn't sure whether the choices I was making were having any impact on the gameplay. Also maybe the dialogue could be triggered by a click on the NPC rather than just having the player walk into the NPC radius (that seems like how it was working? IDK). Anyway, nice job on this. :)
Glad to hear you liked it Mystic!
The NPC dialogue coming into play does happen in the late part of the game when choosing which of the 2 Endings you are rewarded with for making it all the way! Time limitations played a role of course but we are both very happy with the fantastic feedback we have received from this great community in our first jam! We have learned so much and plan to try our hand at future Jams in order to keep learning.
Played for like 3 hours, probably spent 1 hour just to find that west gate the civilian told me about...I finally find a way to the west side of the town, get into a dramatic fight with 2 gang members and a bat, I die and because of me clicking so fast I accidently clicked quit and there goes all my effort...I almost punched my computer lol.
but despite of my tragic experience lol, Awesome game, great job with everything and I read in the comments you guys mentioned you are planning to make a map and more houses, so thumbs up for that, would make it easier for me to get to west side lol.
Aw, sorry to hear the accidental quit. That happened to me also. Something I want to add is an "Are you sure" to help curb that. Warlikefury and I are looking over ways to make it a bit easier to navigate the streets. There were a few ideas brought up during the production, but that was too time consuming with everything else. I hope you had fun overall!
This was a fun game! Good gameplay, audio, and smooth controls! It definitely keeps you wanting to come back for more!
Woo WebGL version for me to play :).
Looks great. impressive that you got something of this scale together.
I find some of the menu buttons not highlighting properly in the early dialogue section. Felt like the highlight area was above the button sometimes.
I spent a while getting killed (at the start, after the first spawn point) and searching for the next spawn point seemed to take a while. Not knowing where to go left me a bit aimless and lost. I personally prefer a bit more direction in these sorts of things. Or more reward to going off wandering (or side quests). Though given the timeframe this may be asking to much :P, so perhaps suggestion for the future of the project.
Well done on your first Jam! You've clearly put a lot of work into this, and it shows! :)
Thanks Peter. Yeah, I was hoping to have time to have powerups on those "off the beaten path" areas to up your health, damage, and crit chance. A way of rewarding the player. I ran out of time though...lol. Thanks for the wonderful feedback. I've made a list of what everyone has discussed and making changes to release the combat and little extras after the jam voting is done. The changes beyond what I have already fixed feels like it is an unfair thing to upload since it's tweaking the combat experience more than fixing bugs.
As for direction, we're considering a map screen of the ward you are in and editing the house designs so they are a bit more varied to get a better idea at where you might be. They are already modular in the sprites (again, ran out of time).
Glad you enjoyed it!
Your game is so clean already that it could stand well with many phone/tablet games now!
It's super awesome. I already just finished tightening up the combat with people's suggestions, applying what I learned at the last moment with having the damage methods activate on specific animation frames. It feels SUPER tighter now. And it's easier to get a sense of who is attacking and when, the animations, etc. I'm a bit hesitant on updating since it isn't a bug. But ready to update when the jam is don.
Really fun game!! nice work!! loved the graphics and combat!! I noticed also that when you press ALT it dashes but I cannot move till I press the left mouse button.
I made some fixes in the game. And got the UI elements figured out so the WebGL version works! I am still working on the combat and enemy combat tweaks and bugs. But the conversation is cleaned up, the camera a bit more pulled back, the music will properly play the right tune on respawn, and the music volume is half of what it was before, making it feel less aggressive.
Thank you all for your feedback. I'll attempt to clean up the combat bugs and feel tomorrow!
Great game, I had a lot of fun playing this on my live stream. I need to go back to find the second ending yet later but solid submission with a cool story and nice take on the theme.
Thanks Metalstorm. It was awesome watching you play. I'm making some edits and updates now to the game to tighten it up and upload after the jam. I feel it would be poor showmanship to upload it beforehand during the judging process. I made the dead scale of the analog from 0.1 to 0.15 in hopes that helps it more. Now going over the other suggestions and tightening up the game some :D. Enjoy with playing the other games!
Brilliant work. Plays smooth and no problems, excellent audio and love the blood splatters.
Rated after watching Metalstorm but will download and play also.
Very much like the checkpoint system and the crits.
I love the fact that the speed of the background music changes based on your current health, well done! Furthermore, the art, sound effects and animations are great too. Talking to NPCs could maybe be only initiated if a certain button is pressed in order to not get talking when accidentally running past them. A short tutorial, some kind of objective and maybe a shortening of the overall game would improve the game flow too, I think. All in all, a great game, especially for a 2-week game jam!
Loved the animation and styling of this. As has been said a few times for me the combat timing is a little off which was a touch frustrating.
Overall nice game!
