Quite a complicated project for a game jam! I liked the music a lot. I feel like I'd need to play longer to really get to the meat of the game, and as others have said, the random encounters come a bit too frequently and are somewhat tedious. I tried some of the other non-attack options but didn't feel like I was getting much feedback on what they actually accomplished in some cases (though I did catch on that things didn't always do what I thought they would). I feel like there's a great basis for a game here with some additional work. Well done!

Great take on the theme! I really enjoyed the gameplay and the take on an RPG. Had to be hard creating an RPG game in only a week. So I can understand the bugs I encountered. If you were given more time and wanted to remake something like this, I hope you could polish the graphics and bugs.
Great experience and idea!
I must say that i really liked the game, my problem with it is that it's too slow and too buggy. When i was fighting the duck turtle the game bugged and i didn't want to continues cause it has so many random encounters that take too much time and has some other bugs that pissed me a little bit. But al that said, i'm impressed you managed to do it in one week, this game is really good, with some polishing it could be one of the best games i played so far. Congratulations :D
Thank you for your feedback.
Can you describe the bug in the duck-turtle fight? I'm considering fixing some problems after the jam and getting more information would help. I tried to spot and solve all major bugs before uploading the game but the time was really short, my own code was dark and full of errors and some bugs went completely unnoticed.
This is a really well made rpg, congrats! Unfortunately in the town where you find xemel, I came back in town from the zone with the fire monters to rest and then I couldn't go on anymore and I was stuck at the end of the road. It's a shame because the game is really good. I don't particularly like how you used the lie theme here, it's annoying when the controls don't do what you think, especially in an rpg and then after the first time you use an ability you know what it does so it is not a lie anymore. But this theme was not easy, especially if you want to make a game like yours.
For a game jam though is an impressive job. The graphics needs to be improved, even if you want to go with 2D pixel art style.
The music was nice and fitting, it is hard to recreate the feeling of the original JRPG's soundtracks.
There's an issue when you switch between characters in fight the arrow remains on the last item in the menu and doesn't resets on the first one.
Overall it is a relly good game!
It would be great if you'd check out our game too https://itch.io/jam/cgj/rate/477069
Funny combat-system! Also the interpretation was quite good! Pretty nice game :)
pretty solid game. Its funny that you can select your character to deal damage to yourself :D i just killed myself fighting some mules :D Check out our game https://itch.io/jam/cgj/rate/477035
Good game, I thought the item descriptions were glitched at first until I realised the point of them. Well done!
Very interesting game that really followed the theme. I like the combat system. The music reminds me a bit of runescape. The description of the abilities while fighting are lying :). I'm not sure if this is normal but the magic seems infinite I can cast spells even after the mp are at zero but I'm glad it is this way since spells use a lot of mp. I appreciate being able to use a ps4 controller as pressing the spacebar for the dialogue was a bit tedious after a while. I like the heal all effect but the particle effects didnt seem to work in a red dragon fight or the final dragon fight, at least not as widely spread as before. The continuous looping of the fire and ice animation in the last fight was a bit stressful but still nice. You were able to put quite a nice story and lenghty gameplay within one week. Great job!
Thank you.
The "unlimited magic" began as a bug, but it fitted perfectly with the theme (the game tells you ability x requires y mana points to be used, but it is not true) that I just decided to leave it there, it felt even better than NPC lies or false ability descriptions. You are the first to notice it.
Rated - Really cool turned based game! I fell a lot of effort was put into this in just one week, awesome job! Take everyone's suggestions and polish/improve the game. Hope you learned a lot! Please check out my entry if you have time~ good day!
Pretty good game :) I like the ideas behind the story and the game's world.
In terms of improvement I can see 5 things:
- A flee option as it's a bit annoying having to fight every monster which takes a lot of time and is repetitive.
-An option to cancel the current action selected would also be great as I happened to misclick a lot.
-Reduce the amount of hits to kill enemies because it takes way too long on top of almost always spamming the same action
-Make selections smoother
-Improve UI to make it more understandable
I'm not sure that I managed to finish the game, but I arrived at the forest and didn't continue because of the long combat encounters.
I'm sure you ran out of time for this game, but apart from the tuning that needs to be done to improve overall quality I think that the combat system works nicely for a start.
I'm actually surprised by how fun this game turned out to be for the first few battles. It's currently the most fun I've had from all the submissions I've tried ^^
Thank you for your reply. I intended to fix most of the problems you have exposed, unfortunately I did not have the time to do so.
There were still other parts after the forest, but the game is quite long for a jam and I expected most players to stop half way. If you are curious you can download the Unity project and look for the blue/yellow areas in the scenes to see the dialogues.
What part of the UI was unclear? Knowing how to improve it could help me a lot with future projects.
One of the best games of the jam, hands down, the only thing it lacks is a "Flee" button (and maybe the encounter ratio is a bit too high), but I have to say that I loved it! The graphics, the music and the particles, the story and how the theme is implemented, also the Combat system is polished and very nice and more you go on the more other options and boosts are useful, I liked a lot the final boss, and the thing that the commands lie. The story was also fun, I laughed so hard at the Hatvengers, very very nice game!
Thank you. You are probably the first to complete it, it is quite long and I was not sure somebody wold have decided to complete it.
As a "prize" you get to know the last secret of the game: mana is a lie, your characters can cast spells independently from its value, nothing will change (embarrassingly it was not planned, it started as an oversight when I forgot to write an if statement, but it fitted perfectly with the theme so I just decided to leave it there).
Is the game supposed too stop at the blocked road? I'm just playing it and I can't figure a way to get through
my review:
I love the game just cause of the fact its like pokemone thought its pretty annoying, whereever I go I need to kill this bat usw. if they would have al little less health would be maiby good. Too many random encounters and they are too frequent.
like the same that @In Priciple Game said
The game fits the theme well because its lying to you, this with "this cant miss" and then it failed to hit him lol. the graphics were ok and the audio also nice. I quite liked the game
keep up the work. its safe difficult to do such a big game for such a short time.
hope you will get a look at my game too.

This is my experience:
1. Dialogue: Enter, enter, enter, enter, enter, enter...
2. Oh, it's done. Let's go right. Talk to some people. Next screen...
3. Random Encounter: Evil mules need like 6 attacks to kill - Enter, enter, enter, enter, enter, enter...
4. Take a step.
5. Random Encounter: Evil mules need like 6 attacks to kill. There are 2 of them - Enter, enter, enter, enter, enter, enter...
6. Take a few steps.
7. Random Encounter: Evil mules need like 6 attacks to kill. There are 2 of them - Enter, enter, enter, enter, enter, enter...
8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 four times, I think. A few with the new character in the party, before he officially joins, but never mind.
9. He joins. Repeat steps 6 and 7 once.
10. Transition to next screen.
11. Take a few steps.
12. Repeat steps 6 to 7, possibly with different enemies. By now I've lost all intellectual capacity. But my Enter finger is stronger than ever.
13. Quit.
What I'm trying to say, in a cheeky kind of way, is that your game has:
1. Too many random encounters and they are too frequent.
2. Evil mules take too many hits for being the very first enemy you encounter.
3. Considering the amount of HP your character have and the damage output of the enemies, there's no point in using anything other than Attack. The Suikoden series created an Auto function. You needed one as well, given the conditions just explained.
Based on these understandings, I wasn't going to subject myself to this anymore.
Music is pretty adequate for the context. Very few SFX.
Graphics are consistent, though very old school. If you're into that, I think they work OK.
