Bobby wants soup! Help Bobby obtain his missing ingredients so he can fix up the most savory and delicious soup this side of the border. On this platforming adventure you will utilize Bobby's various M.O.D.E.S. (Must Obviously Desire Eating Soup) in order to acquire his desired mise en place for the soup. Bobby has two M.O.D.E.S. he can switch between which allow him to phase in and out of solid matter. Utilize these incredible M.O.D.E.S. so Bobby can have soup. Please enjoy your brief time with Bobby, remind him that soup is good, but it's the journey that matters.

Hell yeah, I am now a big fan of Bobby. Nice presentation, I really appreciate the background art and the music goes HARD which I also appreciate. Had a lot of fun with this one, overall great job!!

Developer

And Bobby is a big fan of you! So glad you had a blast with Bobby, Bobby loves you forever now. Very glad you enjoyed the art and music as well. The background art is an artisanally hand crafted work by our teams environment artist!

Bobby got stuck inside a platform, bobby didn't get his soup :( . Cool gameplay mechanic (kinda makes me think of Lemillion). Would really like to see more checkpoints (at least for first few tutorial/learning levels, or maybe I was just rly bad at it) and maybe make phasing jump a bit easier to control.

Developer

:0 I'm so sorry Bobby didn't get his soup. During testing we found Bobby can get stuck inside platforms but is usually able to phase out. I believe our coder, valvespring, mentioned he was inspired by Lemillion when designing the gameplay, so glad you picked up on that!

Developer

Did you get Bobby stuck and just leave him there??? Sorry I did not fix that bug, seems to have hit a lot of players. I have a fix ready but as a temporary workaround during the jam, you can always just unphase again to fall out. I'll also work on setting up more explicit tutorial platforming puzzles (though I do not intend to directly spell it out for players).

Yes Lemillion was an inspiration! The sequences in MHA with Lemillion are so captivating and dynamic, I was really hoping I could create a movement system that felt as exciting as Lemillion flying in and out of solid matter that could be controlled by a player. A hard balance but a worthy challenge!

If you're brave enough to try again, I recommend looking at the phasing mechanic as something to abuse rather than something you're required to use. It is intended as the main mechanic of the game. When you unphase while inside a platform, you will be launched out in the direction that is least overlapped. You can get more or less power from this based on how much of Bobby is overlapping the platform. The boost is significantly more powerful than your jumps! You can use your unphase for all kinds of stunts if you time it right.

Help Bobby get his soup Leyza!
Thanks for playing :)

Bobby is such a cutie. His animations, controls, and physics are smooth. Would love to see some fine-tuning with the phasing mechanic. Nice work!!

Developer

Thanks for playing with Bobby! I'm so glad you had fun with him, and we appreciate the feedback. We hope to keep fine-tuning and polishing the game!

this is crazy, I love bobby, I must get him soup

Developer

bobby love crazy, and bobby love you too, bobby needs soup

Love the player character design and his desire to eat soup. Very relatable. The mechanic of phasing through solid matter speaks to me and reminds me of my favorite character from the critically acclaimed film The Holy Mountain by Alejandro Jodorowsky.

It was fun to figure out how to make use of the mechanic, but it is understandably a bit janky and takes some getting used to. For me personally, I like experimenting with odd physics like this. There is a lot of potential for learning new tricks.

Glad you liked the game! While I am the criminal responsible for creating the phase mechanic and it proved reliable in my concept tests, I happen to agree that it doesn’t always feel just right. I couldn’t help but feel like it occasionally cheated me out of a correctly timed unphase- especially when I had built up some speed by unphasing through multiple platforms in a row. I’ll be thinking about different ways to make this feel more fair and reliable if I do any more work on the game. Additionally, there’s another bug where the player can get stuck in the middle of or between platforms which we already had a fix for - it was just forgotten 😅.

Game aside, based on the single image provided, I searched up The Holy Mountain expecting to find reviews of some D-list meme film with 1 star ratings. Instead, I found one of the most masterful and captivating trailers I’ve ever seen. The creators of Bobby Wants Soup will be watching this film in near future.

I can't seem to run the game? When I  click the executable it launches and closes immediately!

Developer

Hi! What platform are you trying to play on? Do any other sorts of messages pop up when it happens?

Submitted(+1)

Loved it the way the main mechanic of the game work is great, has a lot of nuances and can be built around a lot. I got used to the control even at first W for jump feels strange. Had lot of fun when I learned the extra momentum gained by alting the phasing. Great music and graphical work I digged it a lot. I don't know about the hard platformer level design I felt that the phasing can have some very neat explorative exploration(and learning how to do some jump can take quite a thinking) ramifications. I loved it in Axiom Verge and that phasing system wasn't as deep as what Bobby can do!

Well done looking foward for more

Developer

Thanks so much for playing! So glad you enjoyed hanging out with Bobby, he's quite a special little lad with those phasing capabilities of his!

Funny looking main character and interesting concept! The controls took me a little while to get used to.

Developer(+1)

Glad you had fun with Bobby! He thinks your a little funny lookin too and enjoyed getting soup with you!

Really enjoyed trying to get Bobby his soup! The phasing was tricky at first, but once I wrapped my head around it I thought it was a really good test of reflexes nearly to make sure I didn't phase through the wrong platform, or did it in time when jumping through a wall. I admit I died a LOT at the start with the barbed wire, I didn't even realize what I was doing wrong at first, so maybe if you could telegraph that a bit more it'd help, but not a big deal! Great entry, art and music, awesome work!

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for playing and the feedback! We're definitely gonna work on the visibility of the wire. So glad you loved the art and music as well. Bobby said he had a great time with you too!

Submitted(+2)

The music goes hard in this! Really liked the aesthetic and overall atmosphere going on here. The game has great speed run potential, and I think the unphasing is a really cool mechanic. I didn't realize at first that the launching was another mechanic so I thought it was a bug at first lol. I found the game quite difficult but that's not a bad thing!

Developer

Thank you so much for the kind words. Really glad you enjoyed the music, game and overall atmosphere, our team had a lot of fun putting it all together!

Soup get! Good challenging platformer, and using the phasing through walls not just to pass them but to launch yourself as well was very neat. I had to get over the “spacebar to jump” ingrained within me haha. I agree with some of the others in that checkpoints or maybe a wider field of view could help prevent somewhat blind jumps. Nice work guys!

Developer

Thanks for playing, so glad you enjoyed your time with Bobby! Appreciate the feedback as well! Our team is looking forward to further working on Bobby!

Bobby has his soup now, Bobby happy.

This is a very original, you used the physics system to make the level interactive. At first it was difficult to me but once I got used to it I was very fast getting places >:)

I like the main character by the way...it somehow looks like someone that actually wants soup haha

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed your time with Bobby. You're on your way to becoming a Bobby Wants Soup speedrurner! Bobby likes you too :)

What a fun challenge! Learning how to phase in and out of the walls while jumping between platforms was really engaging. Awesome work :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I'm so glad you enjoyed the phasing, our programmer made sure there were many creative ways to use it!

Submitted(+2)

I can really tell how much work your team put into the jam! I liked the character, music and concept for the game. If you do a future build I just have two suggestions and both of them are gameplay related. Sometimes there were blind jumps, and I think in a platformer that is really hard because from the player perspective it seems like there is nothing they could have done but guessed and failed, so keeping at least the next jump in view would help with that. My second idea is checkpoints, with platformers this hard I think checkpoints encourage the player to keep trying and get better. Fun game though, I really liked that ending a phase in the middle of a platform gave a super jump!

Developer

Thanks so much for playing, and the feedback is greatly appreciated! I'm so glad you liked the game and I'm sure Bobby loved spending time with you too :)

Bobby strong, bobby make soup, bobby eat soup to become strong, bobby go bobby mode.

Developer

bobby soup big, bobby soup yummy.

Submitted(+2)

Good idea for mechanics. The running and jumping feels nice, but you kinda get stuck on the side of platforms sometimes. The game is maybe also a bit too punishing, but otherwise nice!

Developer

Thank you so much! It most definitely is a very punishing game, but maybe we will address that in later updates. Thank you again for playing!

I hit space to jump out of habit and immediately phased through starting platform to my death, gave me a great chuckle.

Developer

I feel you on that, phased myself to death quite a good few times :) Glad you had fun!

Submitted(+2)

I like the mechanics, the music, and the character. There seems to be a lot of blind jumps (platforms off screen). Otherwise, nice job!

Developer

Much appreciated! Glad you enjoyed the game, I'm sure Bobby loved hanging out with you too!

I love the art especially Bob and the soup being cooked up and stuff. I platforming was a bit frustrating at times and the phase whilst a bit buggy, it felt cool to pull off. Overall pretty good, keep up the good work!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad you enjoyed the game, nothin like having some soup with Bobby :)

Developer

Do you mind describing the bugs you encountered with phasing and what platform (Windows / MacOS) you played on? I can take a look at ironing them out.
