I really enjoyed this game. You have to die to pretty much get a look at the level, and then have to memorize where everything is to get through it. What a great idea!! I actually found myself placing my mouse where key features were so I could get my jumps and dodges just right. I think you did a great job on this game!!!

FYI: https://www.reddit.com/r/gamemaker/comments/kfs5cs/keyboard_inputs_no_longer_wor...

I had to download the project file to play it.

How are you supposed to pass the level with the plant between two fires? Do you have to move the flashlight so that it just barely touches the plant? It feels too gimmicky.

Either way, solid game, clever uses of the main mechanic. Though I do think you could've cut down on the wall of text at the start and maybe improved the visuals somewhat. The different pixel sizes made it look like beginner-level pixel art. Keep the pixel size consistent. (I say that while scaling the character in my game by 2.5x)

Oh yeah and you can die by touching the underside of a spiky block even when the spikes are on top of the block, which is fun

Interesting idea, good execution!

I just don't understand why the character dies here:

Of course, constantly memorizing levels and moving in the dark can be annoying for many, and check points (when the torch ends) wants to get closer.

Good luck in development =)

Thanks for playing!

You aren't meant to stand on that part, this is definitely a visual issue. It's tripped a few people up and I'll work on communicating that better in the future. I'll also tweak it after the jam ends!

This comment has given me a good idea - including an option to make the game easier by resetting the torchlight to max at the start of each level. Thanks for the feedback!

The concept of this game is super cool. I really really enjoyed it! Probably one of the most creative mechanics in this jam and I really had fun playing it! I think my biggest issues were more of the hitboxes. I noticed sometimes I was dying to spikes even though I was appearing on a flat surface. Noticed that on the level where you have to grab the key and jump down spikes on both sides. Even before I grabbed the key, I was on the flat platform to its left and seemed to be dying as well. Same for the level where you are chased by the pink arrow and after that jump, there's some fire and spikes you had to go to get the key before going back to the door. I noticed that even though the arrow didn't hit me, if I hit my head on the ceiling, I seemed to be getting killed by the spikes above it. Even though those spikes weren't for the ceiling... if that makes sense. I think a little signposting as to what the hazards do might be helpful in the game. But to be honest, I never really had trouble with that part. You respawn so easily it's pretty easy to figure out and just learn from your mistakes. I particularly loved how you could kinda do a blind run of the game without using the light.  I think there's some fun speedrunning potential there with how fast the game resets. I love that it is forgiving to deaths. Was playing around trying to see how far I could go without using the torch. The graphics were pretty well suited for this game, the sound and musics were nice too. Game gave a fun challenge that I loved to play!

Developer

Thanks so much! Really glad you enjoyed it.

And for sure, the hitboxes and the tileset itself definitely need some improvement. It's definitely something I'll tweak after the Jam!

really cool, well thought out game!

Thanks a ton!

The best concept I've seen so far! Finished till the end and I'm proud to die 128 times! The levels were simple yet challenging with increasing difficulty. I got a bit stumped with piranha plants, especially the one surrounded by flames. Took me a while to realized and when I did, it felt good!

It might be just me but when I press R, the game freezes (HTML version). Might want to check that out. Also in the last level, if you don't get the rainbow thingy (what is that?) the round won't end. I know you intended people to get the rainbow thingy but I just like breaking games :)

The graphics are simple but very well executed.  The contrast between the black and white world with the neon rainbows was a fantastic design choice!

I'm giving this full 5 stars, you deserve it!

Developer

Thank you so much, and fair play for finishing the whole thing! I'm really glad you enjoyed it.

The rainbow thingy is just the main artifact you have to destroy to finish the game. I was running out of time by then, so that's why it's a little ambiguous! Would definitely have made it more distinct in hindsight. And thanks for letting me know about the R thing, I'll look into that

Thanks again for the rating and the positive vibes here!

This is great!! I love the pixel art, and the puzzles are really satisfying to figure out. I thought it was really clever to have spots that catch fire in the light. Overall a fun game with cute graphics, well done!

It's probably just on my end, but I was having this issue where sometimes the spacebar would scroll the page and when that happened I couldn't control the character anymore. It doesn't look like anyone else mentioned that so it's probably just a browser issue I'm having.

Btw both our games have protagonists that resemble Indiana Jones, probably because we are awesome :D

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the kind words!! Hopefully the spacebar issue didn't get too frustrating 😅

I'll be checking out your game for sure. I'm glad my Indiana Jones character isn't alone in the Jam!

It wasn't too bad, I just had to retry a couple times. Similar issues happened to me while playing most of the other browser games too, so it's totally on my end. Your game is great!!

I enjoyed your game . Great concept.

Will play it some more.

Thank you!

Nice little puzzle platformer. The torch mechanic is cool but it's pretty hard to figure out some of its effects, like that it lights up dangerous fires! I thought the fires were on a timer at first and kept checking on them to see when they'd turn off but they never did.

Another improvement I would suggest is have the torch power auto-regenerate so that the player don't get stuck.

Good job!

Developer(+1)

Ah, sorry about the fire thing 😅 There might be a better way to communicate the mechanic, for sure.
You should be able to press T, which will set you back at the last checkpoint and refill your torchlight.

Thank you for playing and leaving feedback!

Developer

As some people are having trouble seeing the controls screen:

~ Controls ~

wasd - walk
space - jump
left mouse (hold) - use torch
r - restart room
t - restart at last checkpoint

The game played really nicely and the art was really good!

Pretty cool game! It took me a minute to figure out the light mechanic, but I had a lot of fun playing it.

Thanks for playing!

I love the retro Spectrum graphics! The instructions disappeared very quickly when I started the game, so I didn't knew you could press the mouse button to peek around at first. I finished the first eight screens completely blind (which was balls hard) :D

It's a fun little game. Keep up the good work ;) Rated!

Developer

Thanks so much! The controls should stay on screen longer than they do, I'll add in some text on the page to help with that. Thanks for letting me know :) but fair play for managing without the light for a while anyway!

I rated your game too, had a lot of fun with it!

Cool idea for a game, simple art but it gets the job done.

Not sure what the healthbar does at the top but maybe it was explained in the huge wall of text at the start that I most definitely skipped. EDIT: I am just now discovering you can click to view the level, but the health goes down. I got this whole way without knowing that. I was using the mouse to "mark" important zones on the map like where to jump!

I got stuck on this level, whenever I'd jump to get the key (which is invisible in the screenshot for some reason?) but die upon landing on either side of the platform.

Developer

Thanks for playing!

Yes, the healthbar is the amount of light you have in your torch. It refills after every 4 levels. Fair play for making it so far in the dark!

The tileset is a bit misleading, you're not meant to stand on the side of the spikes in that level. The way it's supposed to be solved is by jumping down through the spike column and quickly jumping again to avoid the arrow. That's on me though, it does look misleading, and it's something I would have polished up with more time.

Thanks for all the feedback, it's very useful to me!

ooooh that makes sense! Might have to give it another go! I really enjoyed playing this

A really neat puzzle game. The controls were good, and the art was really clever, but I felt the game lacked some polish. Some levels were also a bit too trial and error for me, and the levels didn't really offer any room for error when learning, as you kind of had to die to learn how things would work. The tutorial also seemed to go by too fast, and it took a couple of reloads to see everything. Perhaps some level flavor text to explain some things a bit better would help. But those things aside, I see a lot of potential here.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback! I think I prefer learning through trial and error in games, and that's the background I approached it from, but I'd definitely try and make it more accessible / intuitive in the future.

The controls should stay on screen longer than they do, I'll add in some text on the page to help with that. Thanks for letting me know!

Love it! - Very addictive... :D   Crisp, clean retro inspired visuals, and tight controls...  :D   Well done!

I don't think the HTML5 version is accepting keyboard input!
