The new update is coming on December 2!

Kick overhaul!

This time the main focus is on improving the kick.

The main goal will be to make it a lot easier to use. The existing kick is kinda fun when you get it working, but unfortunately that's a very small percentage of the time.

The new kick works with a simple press of your right mouse button, and instantly unleashes a kick in whatever direction you're traveling (including sideways).

Spike plates!

So far the saw blade has been the only obstacle in the arena.

This update we welcome a new guest: Pressure triggered spike plates!

Expect some new Endless levels featuring this charming obstacle.

Bow upgrades!

Compared to the other upgrade paths the bow became a little bit less relevant with the last update. Expect some interesting upgrades attached to the Arrow Width branch!

Not included: Twitch Mode!

I spent a week building out the infrastructure for an exciting new game mode.

It's a crazy experimental experience where you can stream the game and interact with a live audience in novel ways.

Since it needs at least another week of work I decided to push it out to the December update, and focus on the gameplay things above for November.

improving the bow is the best thing yet, but we still have no way to easily counter jetpack robots. this will be awesome either way.

in all honestly i love the challenge, it makes it reallt more difficult and sometimes really crazy but still fun

when you dont have a way to counter these guys, its a bit too difficult to beat them. I've had 3 lives wiped out by one mark 1 jetpack bot.

and i'm usually killed cause the blue in my head gets TAPPED.

So far kicks help with them a bit. The jetpack kick is a good way to chase them down and knock them over.

i cant kick them. they always jetpack away from me when i try sword and kicks. the bow i'm lucky with alot.

Edit: i cant wait to see new features, too.

I had pointed this out too on the last update, so i obviously agree. What im curious to is if the new kick features and bow features will make things better. Can't wait to find out, keep up the good work!!

Yes, I'm moving pretty quickly, so some of the animations will probably be left in a first draft sort of state. :)

I'm thinking that for december you could add...wait for it... flips! Like a flip after a jump that slices in a complete circle. Also it's a shame that right click is going to be kick now, it would have been awesome if that was the trigger for a 2nd sword.And finally I'm thinking you could add word throws and let us pick up enemy weapons.

Really looking forward to the next update! Any news on story progression of some sort?

No story progression this update. It is starting to feel like there should be one soon though. Either Dec or Jan probably!

right click isn't a preferable default. i was hoping it would be the E button, its not too awkward, and people can easily get used to it.

you do what you want to, tho.

it could also maybe be the "Q" button, its used in paint the town red at least and it controls fine

It really seems like such a small update but im sure you worked hard on this. Im 100% sure that even if its a smaller update that it will change the gameplay a lot! Good work! I really enjoy this game and i'm glad to have these monthly updates! Enjoy your thanksgiving!

Yes, it's definitely much smaller than the last one.

I've really only spent one week building new features for it:

  • The first week of this month was spent fixing bugs and dealing with Windows Defender freaking out.
  • The second week was spent laying the foundations of Twitch Mode (which as I mentioned will be released later!)
  • Next week I'll go back to fixing bugs to make sure the build is as stable as it can be.
I think it should be a pretty fun update nonetheless! :)

Yeah, I've been meaning to make a giant humanoid of some kind. It's very easy just to scale someone up, but I have to think a bit about what weapon they use and what that means for combat.

I've thought a lot about super bosses. a giant boss coming up from the ground (not all the way) and having a limited circle to move around him (if you get knocked away too far, you fall into blue super lava).

he would have a giant hammer that he smashes down frequently, but eventually his hammer gets stuck. That is when you climb up to hit him once, getting knocked back and having to do it all over again (he gets more frequent every time you hit him). the giant dies in a cool way the 3 and final time he gets hit, exploding and sinking into the blue super lava.

Since the game doesn't have a traditional notion of damage, maybe you have to hit a certain number of targets before he dies.
Could also do a boss that rebuilds itself in a new form JRPG style, after you destroy the first version.

i was thinking a red circle (the thing on spider-tron) would open up when he gets his hammer stuck, except at the last hit, which would then cause him to decay a little bit and fall into the lava. you would go from his arm to his chest and hit his weak spot.

the boss would have to be tough enough so that its you vs the boss, with no mark 3 bots in the way.

my other super boss ideas would tie into my idea of having a ninja or knight class to hit the red circles in different ways, like making arrow resistant metal and require shurikens to remove the armor and reveal the red circle, or to reflect a laser beam off a sheild toward an arrow resistant red circle.

for a final boss fight against the Robot Emperor, rebuilding itself would be a cool feature.

that's my problem too. i die a lot by arrows or jet-bots. arrows are random, but jet-bots appear out of nowhere for me. but the one thing that i rage at is being tapped on the head from behind a mark 1 or mark 2 sword-bot. the blue on my head doesn't even go away and i die.

Not yet. It is tricky to fix since we haven't been able to reproduce the error. It's in the bug backlog though.

News: Pushing the update out by a week!

The new date is Friday, Dec 2!

In addition to things mentioned in the original post, the extra week will be spent on:

  • Making new Endless Levels to make sure you have a fresh experience!
  • Allocating more time to fixing bugs to make sure the build is stable.

I'm just grateful that it's coming out, period. After wading through the endless waves of abandonware on Steam, it's honestly refreshing to see a developer who actually cares about their projects.

Can we also have a continue from X difficulty for the endless mode (even if the scoring is disabled)? For casuals like me, that's a pretty important thing ;)

Not for this update! People have been requesting a Sandbox mode, which could maybe scratch some of the same itch. Not sure when I'll do it, but likely sometime next year.

It's a tricky balance between making cool things happen on good computers and not wrecking performance on lower end machines.

I'll try to take a pass at performance for both the saw blade and the spikes to make them as performant as possible. So far the spikes have been ok on my macbook pro which is probably about mid-range when I'm running the game in the editor with a lot of other programs open.

It also comes down to level design. I'll try not to have too many levels that are a field of spikes and enemies. :)

As a reference I'd say the FPS drop is usually smaller than for saw blades, but since things are being cut there is definitely an impact.

Basically, cutting things is the most expensive operation in the game whatever it is that's doing the cutting.

I think that in a future update you should add the Emporers newest in technology, Prototype Laser-Guns. They use energy, cannot be deflected, but only take 1 square (cube, pixel, whatever) so you have to get them in the head. There should be a robot that uses this weapon, but the player should be able to acquire it in an upgrade.

ALSO, I think you should make a shield that drains energy as you are using it, and makes your attack slower, considering you only can use one hand. (Just a thing that would make it even cooler, maybe make it have the garbage door effect? Where it makes you be blasted back when you touch it, and for the robots by touch I really mean hit with a sword)
