Very fun game! I managed to achieve some scores in insane mode! 😛

Is that with version 1.1? Or with the original version? There was a bug to do with the YYC compiler itself that gave that error message in the original, but I was pretty sure I fixed it for v1.1. (just deleted the original version because the jam is almost over and a few people have been caught downloading the wrong one)

Don't know.. I had downloaded it a several minutes before making the comment.

Developer

Yeah, I took the old version down after your comment, I got sick of people getting confused as to which one they should play, lol.

Great game, great fun congratulations!

My scored 1334 points :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks! You were nearly 1337 =P

The first impression is important, and just the main menu looks awesome to me. It's the most professional-looking game i've played in this Jam, and it's also very fun to play. The tutorial is really well done and i can tell you have a lot of experience with game making or you're just a talent. NICE JOB!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Ain't no such thing as talent =P Just practice, practice, practice!

This game is very polished and fun in every way! Great job! Rated!

Developer

Thanks!

Tutorial and so detailed settings are additions, rarely seen in this compo!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I tried to keep the scope small enough so I had enough time to implement most of the things I wanted to =) I got like 95% of the way there (the only thing I would want to add would be alternate modes of play, like perhaps a "Speedster" track with only boosts and platforming, with the goal being maintaining a high speed, etc).

Submitted(+1)

this was really well made I wanted to play more but the game keep crashing, then I downloaded the updated version and was a blast, amazing that you have online leadearboards integrated, well done!

Developer

Thanks! Luckily, I've implemented leaderboards for previous games...If I had to do it for the first time here, with the number of bugs and silliness I ran into trying to do it before, there's no way I would've had time, hahaha.

Neat!

Thanks Xor!

This was a lot of fun! Tons of options which is great! I wish more games let you customize the actual LOOK of the game and not just inputs. Well done! It was pretty challenging honestly! I kept getting confused between the different keys and what colors they were in the heat of the moment. haha. My only suggestion might be to maybe stick with 2 colors and 1 button. I think doing that could really enhance the experience and not bog the player down with trying to remember to jump and color change while avoiding lazers and hitting speed boosts.

Overall great work! Your glow shader looks good! :D

Developer(+1)

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, that's a good suggestion about the multiple colours. I had a bit more planned originally to do with the multiple colours but scoped down after a day or so without rethinking the design aspect. It'd make it easier to build for mobile screens with fewer colours as well (if I had the mobile export, that is).

I had a great time with this one, trying to beat Evanski in real time while he was streaming himself playing. (I really need to figure out how to do online high scores) very nice job! Lots of gameplay options!! Congratulations!

Developer

Glad it was fun! Online high scores are a pain in the arse and I'm still getting used to them (there are two non-game-breaking bugs I know about right now, it eternally "loads" high scores if the table is empty or if there are exactly enough scores to fit on the screen and you click show more), but my brother is a high score fiend and won't leave me alone if one of my games is competitive without an online component, lol. Was it you I sent the link to about high score tutorials?

Developer

Also, I'm happy to share my crappy online code.

Submitted(+1)

Great game! This is a lot of fun to play!
The random stats and highscores are a nice addition to the game.

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks! I always find it more fun to play these types of games when I can see a bunch of statistics about how well I did, lol.

The bugs were amazing!  The game is really fun to play even if i suck really hard at it, needs more polish and Q/A testing. other then that really decent game! https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1064516191 @36:27

Developer

Thanks for playing (and being my QA guinea pig =P)!

Due to a game breaking bug within the YYC compiler itself (not a bug within my code directly), I've uploaded a new version "Neon Run v1.1.zip", however, in order to stay true to the time constraints imposed by the jam, the old version that was submitted before the end of the jam period is still available under "Neon Run.zip", hope that sits ok with everyone.

(If anyone wants to know what triggers the bug in the compiler, I'm happy to share an example project)

EDIT: Yoyo has confirmed it as a bug in the compiler itself, they've also confirmed that minor edits to your game are ok after submission period (I had to change a single variable, so I class this as minor lol): https://forum.yoyogames.com/index.php?threads/amaze-me-game-jam.86376/post-51992...

Awesome game, liked the song variety a lot
I would like it more if the only thing that changed across dificulties was the track layout and I could build more speed on easy but that's just personal taste

Developer(+1)

Thanks! That's definitely a fun idea. My focus on the easy mode was kind of making it unbeatable, in a sense, so that an uncoordinated kid or grandparent could try to play the game without finding it impossible, but making it a kind of "gotta go fast" mode would be fun for sure )

I like the great use of the theme! The game feels good to play. The visuals are also good but I feel like there's a lack of consistency like having hand drawn fonts to clean leaderboard menus.
Unfortunately, the game keeps crashing after I die so I have to keep restarting it in order to play.

Developer

Thanks for the kind words! Glad you had fun, but sorry for what must have been a frustrating experience having to constantly restart to keep playing =/ That bug is very odd, it looks to me as though GMS is rejecting code in the format:

array[0] = variable;

But (unless people are having it happen and not commenting) it seems as though it's only happening on your pc (I've had a few friends play it with no crashes). Are you able to let me know what difficulty you are playing on? (also is that the entirety of the text for the error message?)

Developer (1 edit)

I've fixed it and with confirmation from yoyo that minor edits are ok, I've uploaded a new v1.1 that shouldn't crash after your run ends =)

Really cool runner game. I could easily see this as some form of mobile or arcade game. Some fonts could be a little better, especially the combo text looking like it was drawn by hand, but aside from that, it was really mechanically entertaining and well done!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it =) The fonts look like they were drawn by hand because they were, hahaha. I could've tightened em up, but I grew to love the ramshackle look of them as I worked on the game (also, by the end of the jam, catching up on missed sleep had a strangely strong allure compared to redoing the handwritten fonts for some weird reason). If I can summon the motivation, I'll probably go over the game once ratings have ended and fix em all up =)

Submitted(+1)

Well done runner =)

Too bright road, it seemed to me so.

Developer(+1)

Hey thanks for playing =) In the options screen, there's quite a few settings you can adjust to do with the glow effect. If you turn the Gamma down a smidge and make the Neon Glow Radius a bit smaller, it should make the road less bright.

Developer (2 edits)

I've added a minor update so that you can view the leaderboard and your personal stats by clicking a button on the main menu, rather than having to play a run in order to see your ranking (so if leaderboards are your thing or you wanna see how your best runs played out, download the new version if you've got the version that doesn't have this functionality).
