This was very nice and also a great concept! I got stuck fairly fast though! But find my gameplay footage below: 1:26:34 The Night Keeper

Hey Bastian.

Firstly I wanna say thanks for including our entry in your review video on youtube! It was so great to watch someone else play and see what you liked and didn't like in real time!

Secondly, I'm going to tell you what you missed on the lake level and I think you're gunna kick yourself. On level 1 & 2 when you placed the statue on the glowing mark it locked into place. But on level 3 the first statue did not lock after you placed it on the yellow fish. Once the bridge is raised you have access to the second yellow fish and you can push the first statue onto it and then it locks and raises the bridge that gives you access to the glowing blue mark! The link is that the one statue is responsible for both yellow marks ;-)

KBoss did a full walkthrough of the Night Keeper if you want to see what I mean or check out what you missed in the remaining 2 levels. But I'd love it if you went back and gave it another try   😂

Oh wow that is how it worked lol!

The atmosphere was really nice, i loved the music and sound effects ! I loved how the statues were moving a bit towards you, it adds something to the game. The fact to be able to walk through walls and trees was a bit strange, or at least their implementation.

Very good job guys ! Keep going !

I loved the atmosphere and the music, the gameplay was absolutely beautiful and peaceful. I got confused with the statues though, the following thing made me feel like they were enemies and I had to avoid them initially. Would love to play more levels, great job 10/10

Developer

hmmm this is a good point about the statues - we wanted it to be mysterious but we don’t want players to deliberately avoid them! Thanks for your feedback, really glad you liked game.

Submitted(+1)

I like the atmosphere the music fits really well. My only concern is the character really breaks the immersion of the game. I suggest you to make a bigger sprite rather than scale it up.

Developer

Thank you! It was so much fun to create the music for this, I found the visuals really inspiring.

The atmosphere, music and gameplay were nice. I really like the way you use darkness for your theme. I only have two real critiques:

  1. the artwork doesn't feel consistent on some things like the trees in particular.
  2. the follow distance on the statues is super tiny. Now it's also on me for not wanting to touch them until I got cornered at the first fish but I had assumed that being touched by them was bad.

I do like everything else and can see the game expanding from that if you added harder puzzles.

This theme was a hard one and I feel like by taking away your "sight" you were providing the less and the more was in the hints you provided by doing so?

Either way I enjoyed that experience and that's what games are supposed to be, experiences. Your team did good and I hope to see you guys do more in the future :)

Developer

Thanks for playing and leaving feedback! I hope you'll consider rating our game!

Submitted(+1)

I did. I just resaved them to be sure, but i was pretty certain I had rated already.

:)

Developer

It went up by 1 so thanks for taking the effort!

I'm not so sure why the statues are kept being attracted by me but that really turned out great when i did a silly mistake, the art is amazing and love the animals that show only in dark, but in terms of gameplay i don't see why you should move if you have the lantern off because you can't see a thing so i would probably just make him stationary, apart form that great game, you really are a great team.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the great feedback! I love your game so much, I was playing a ton of it yesterday.

At one point during development we discussed whether we should add a "pull" mechanic to the game. We were running out of time and instead decided to make the statues "creep" toward you. It felt like the right choice because it makes the statues a bit more eerie. This is definitely not a perfect solution and is one of the first mechanics we'll revisit if we make updates to the game.

For being able to move in the dark, that's definitely a good point. From our testing it seemed to depend on a person's play styles. I watched some turn the lights out and move in the dark (remembering where they were) and others only move in the light while checking for clues in the dark.

Submitted(+1)

Nice game ! maybe the "follow" mecanic on statue is a little bit wierd.
But I love the night/day switching design

Developer(+1)

We wanted to include things that made people wonder why they were the way they were or what was going on. With more time I think we could have got to our vision of an ominous world just out of sight. Thanks for your feedback and glad you enjoyed playing it!

Submitted(+1)

Nice visuals, music and atmosphere. Definitely 5 stars on all these criteria. However, I can't find the connection with the theme...

Developer

Less light more..... clues, creatures, ethereal world  😂. So glad you loved our game!

Submitted(+1)

Nice experience, great visuals and music. Puzzle are very simple, but the atmosphere given by visuals and music is amazing!

Loved the music! Levels were designed in such a way that no further instructions were needed to understand what you had to do. Really charming!

Submitted(+2)

LOVE the Visuals and the Music.

Great Idea and Execution, really love the Night Vibe

Great Game! 😁

Developer

Thank you so much!

I was delighted to play this game. Really solid submission across the board. The little things really made a big difference, like the subtle gravity the player has over the statues. The glowing dark world is whimsical and mysterious, and the puzzles do a great job leading you to what you should do next. There were a couple of levels that I felt had been designed to pad playtime a bit, where the solution was obvious, but the process of getting the statue to the intended location dragged on, but that's really my only criticism. Great job!

(1 edit) (+2)

Ok, very fascinating submission. It was truly enjoyable 10mins of my time, but let's critisize a little :P

Theme:

I'm really sorry, but I had a problem with getting a theme in this one :/ I know that we are lighting off those lanterns, but it felt a bit unrelated to me. Tried tho.

Visuals:

Great job out there. Both light/dark motives are beautiful. You made an amazing use of glow here and it really gives that mystery feeling all the time. (loved that at the ending I could also turn off the light, it was really suprising :D). Hmm if I were to recommend anything, it would be probably about consistensy of art. Almost the only thing that made me notice some mistakes was that some of the objects in dark mode are made with lower and some with higher resolution. Same goes for glow, some have pretty strong glow and some (like fish) are very delicate. It's a small thing, but already while playing my mind is focused on several parts of the screen at once, as some objects are more distinctive from the others. Also I had the problem with objectives (this X, Fish sign etc), if other objects are much more detailed, then they ought to be too. I know that you wanted to make them different to show that they are your objective, but maybe it would rather be better to somehow do them in a similar style as those statues, so that they are not differing from other glowwy objects and we can fit them as out objective. PS: I loved the particle animation you did at the end of every level, beautiful!

Gameplay:

Very enjoyable, well thought and it has a great potential to build upon.

Game design:

You made a wonderful job on leading the player. Game isn't too hard nor too easy and when I got used to the system, I could easily read what you were trying to tell me each level. Maybe it would be good to show that some objects (those that were glowwy in dark mode: like trees, walls) that we could go through, were somehow like 'ilusion', so that when we cross them, they got some ripple effect/getting transparent on them or sth like that, so that you don't feel like game is buggy, but rather that this object really isn't there. Just a loose idea.

SFX:

I liked the sounds and music was deeply climatic (I've even waited in the credits till it ended before quiting the game). So great job here too

Overall:

That's a lovely submission and I'm really happy I could play it. Thank you :)

Developer(+1)

this is all wonderful feedback! Thank you so much!

Our idea with the theme was less light more beauty/more information because you see more in the dark. However if that theme didn't land with you through playing it we didn't achieve our goal as well as we thought. Which is a learning experience in itself!

Definitely agree with the glows and how they didn't seem consistent over the fish versus the game markers.

In hind sight when you talk about the markers being a different pixel style you reminded me that I actually made 2 sets of objective decals and chose the simpler ones because at some point there was an idea to put them in the statues and we just never went with that idea. But they stayed styled differently because of it.

There is a lot of good feedback here to learn from thank you so much for taking the time to write this out! We appreciate it :)

(+1)

Oh, maybe it was just me to miss it :P You can see what other's opinion on the theme is, as it might be just problem with my thought process ;)
Anyway, I'm glad that you found my feedback helpful and wish you all, all the best! You are great guys!

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for the thoughtful review and comments. Really happy how much people are enjoying our game. The music you loved so much was composed by sam

Developer(+1)

Wow, I really appreciate such thorough feedback. This is awesome.

Submitted(+2)

Really nice visuals, enjoyed the atmosphere a lot. Puzzles were very simple, I think there's a lot more you could do with this!

Developer

Thanks! I agree, now that our concept is nailed down, there are a lot more places we could have taken the puzzles if we had had more time!

Submitted(+1)

It was interesting to play. Great idea and good mechanics! Good job!

Please check my game as well ;)

P.S.

I like this pixel art and lights) Awesome!!!!!

Submitted(+2)

The game was really good, in particular I thought the lighting was really cool.

Developer

Thank you! I really liked your game! I played it a bunch this morning.

Submitted(+1)

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it :D

Submitted(+2)

The art was very impressive!

Developer(+1)

:D thank you!!!!!!

Submitted(+1)

I'll admit, I'm a sucker for 2D lighting and good music. The pace of the game felt slow at times but overall I liked it a lot.

Developer

Thanks my friend! The art by @BoisterousNatur was really inspiring for me when I made the music, was great to have art to inspire the sound.

Submitted (1 edit) (+2)

i really liked the game, the puzzles weren't hard but anyway, the concept is cool , you can feel the eerie atmosphere,  and the visual aspect of the game is very well made, congratulations, the player needs to move just a little bit faster

Developer(+1)

This is great feedback, thank you!

Submitted(+2)

The game looks awesome! The puzzles were pretty straight forward, and i didnt really like that the golum or stone would move towards me when standing by it, found it annoying when moving it to platforms. I also loved the use of the lantern mechanic. Good job broske!

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot for this feedback! We created the "golum drift" as an alternative to having a "pull" option, so the player wouldn't get stuck in corners etc. But there's definitely a lot about that we would improve if we had more time!

Submitted(+2)

its just a small peeve i had. The game is really well made. good job!
