How does the game fit the theme?
Ari, the protagonist, is an artist who has to travel through her whimsical paintings to restore her creations. She goes through quite a few "strange places" :)

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
We only used some UI (mainly button logic) from my previous jam games to help save a little time. Everything else is completely original and made by the team!

How many people worked on the game?

God damn this game jam submission is actually incredible!! I loved the gameplay so much I could genuinely see a game being made out of this. One recomendation I'll give is to use more smear frames in animating the attacks; currently, the attacks feel a little slow, and that's ok if that's what you were going for, but if you cut some of those animations and replaced them with smears, they could look way smoother and responsive (that's what I did for my game, if you wan to check that out it's on the last minigame lol). Here's a video that also helped me get the smears right:

Good luck with the jam guys!

I like how the enemies turn to colour when I swipe them with my paint brush, some thoughts as I played:

  • Beginning room could be a bit clearer that you have to dive into the painting, as I thought this was one of those point and clicks where I had to find a key to go into the door. But very minor point that did not distract from the experience.
  • I like how you don't have to backtrack in this game and go back to the starting point when you find the key, and instead unlock a shorter path to go back, which makes it not repetitive.
  • The sound effects were used well, such as audio feedback to indicate that a gate has unlocked offscreen, which is a nice touch for user experience.
  • The subtle animation to show an item is interactable is also nice, as otherwise it would have been harder to differentiate what is interactable versus background objects. I think assigning it a unique colour could also be used to differentiate too, to make it even more identifable.

Overall nice premise as well as the lore that sets up how you enter the painting and become miniaturized. I tried to speedrun it by rushing through the areas but the monsters got me xD. The monsters are also very cute.

"Ari and the Fading World was made by a crazy talented team, excluding myself. :P " Also nooo why discreditting yourself?

I really like the art style, animations, music, as well as the simple but fun mechanics and good level design.

In the first level the door that required a key to go through it, it said I didn't have the key, but it let me through anyway. This only happened in the first level, just a bug I found.

Overall, a fun and creative game that fits the theme and has a very nice story.

Pretty good game! I really like the cute art style and the relaxing soundtrack. Anyway, would you mind trying my game too?

I really loved the artstyle and the SFX were really satisfying.
The enemies becoming vibrant and colored after being hit with the brush and the character doing the same thing when hit was a nice touch.

The music really gave Ari's determination to save her paintings.

However had a tough time differentiating the enemies on the  second level from the floor tiles. They would confuse themselfs when grayed out. Also, the light green tiles are not always walkable and that confused, the paths weren't much clear.

And the frogs were a bit unfair because they didn't get knocked back and would always hit atleast once and if I was already low in health, I would have redone the level.

Overall loved the game, nice message at the end and it quite goes with the theme as those are really strange places.

Very interesting game. The chilling atmosphere and music work really well together. Having health recovery placed around the map is a smart design choice, since it maintains tension without overly punishing the player. The walking controls feel very smooth. The witch can stop bothering me for now.

It was a great game, one of the few games where I played through it naturally. The fighting mechanics and the level design was pretty good. A decent plot to keep us hooked and clean music supporting the gameplay.
Kudos!! It was a really well made game.
Have a nice day :D

Developer

Awwww thank you friend! Really appreciate the kind words. Your game’s atmosphere was cool too! Happy you enjoyed what we did here - the team I worked with was really amazing!

Submitted(+2)

Though the game has only two levels, the arts, sound effects and music are sure nice knowing that you done by yourselves, keep up the good work!

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much friend, really nice to hear it! I love what the rest of the team did here!

Loved the quality of art style, sounds, music, and gameplay. Perfect game for a Jam, and a really cute short story. The level designs were fun, I got lost a bit in some parts of the mazes, and had a bit of problems reading the green walls with the other green floor tiles in some parts like this:

But loved the world pixel art, parts like this were beautiful:

Amazing game, 5/5 :)

That first room with the dark hedges must have given trouble to a lot of people! It’s definitely the least readable in the game and that’s definitely on me, I assumed the language of “dark hedge wall / clear green path” was much clearer :( but THANK YOU for your kind words and for even adding screenshots! That garden just before you enter the castle was really fun to build, I’m kinda proud of that little room :P but it’s obviously all thanks to our artist’s beautiful pixel art, couldn’t have done this without her!

Submitted

I’m sure if we had a bit more scope time testing of the game with more friends, those hedges details would have been easier to spot, but honestly that’s the only thing I found that I wanted to share. The rest of the game theme, gameplay and as you said, beautiful pixel art and audio design, was perfect :) great work and congratulations to all of you! <3

Very good from what ive played but im stuck at level 2 and dont know what to do overall very entertaining

Developer(+1)

One of my friends got stuck at level 2 as well, I think I know where you might be - probably in a room outside the castle! Thanks for trying my game and your lovely words, I’ll definitely try out yours if I haven’t already!

Submitted(+1)

Impressive game! the art and music are great, and the concept is really interesting. Too bad we didn't get to fight the witch. Great work overall!

Developer(+1)

Maybe I could add the Witch as a boss in a future release 👀 👀 👀 thanks for your comment friend! I’ll try your game too!

Submitted(+1)

A very good looking game! The graphics in this game is really polished and I like the general vibe of the game. Instead of defeating enemies, you repaint them, which is a really good take on combat. And the idea of restoring her creation is really good too! Great game!

Developer

Thank you friend! We really wanted to go for the cosy vibe here, I’m glad it came through! I’ll check out your game later today :)

Submitted(+1)

The game looks really nice! I like the artstyle a lot, and the player character is really cute too! I also found the story quite close to my heart as someone who also suffers from self-doubt. Gameplaywise it's nice and simple, but I would hope the combat would be a bit more punchy with more responsive attacks. I do like the whole idea of attacking via colouring an enemy, though. Such a good twist!

Other things I like:

  • Both levels have different themes and tilesets
  • Really good ending sequence
  • Well-implemented dialogue box

Suggestions:

  • Some graphics might need some rework. For example, the walls in the first map feel too flat and can be confused with grass pathways, the tiles in the second level have too large contrast and hurt the eye after looking for a while

Anyway, I can't find much else to criticise so this, in my opinion, is quite a nicely done entry! Well done!

Developer

Wow this is a very detailed comment, thanks a million for taking the time to put it together! Really useful, and agree with the hedges feeling a little confusing with the way I put them. There’s definitely room to improve things a little in a potential future build!

This is such a cosy game with charming art and music to go along with it! Very cool idea behind painting the enemies to become friendly, that's not a mechanic you normally see. Enjoyed branching of to explore and try and find breakable walls also

Developer(+1)

You may not realise it but your comment is so useful! I was hoping the branching off and the hidden breakable walls would be interesting to find, but then I realised that I often made them confusing. I’m so glad you liked those things though, to some extent I must have done something right! I will check out your game too, thank you so much! :)

Lovely visuals paired with a clever, distinctive gameplay idea

Developer(+1)

So kind, thank you my Pear-made-of-Jade friend! I’ll try out your game too!

I love the art, colours and music very much, this is a very relaxing game 😊

Developer(+1)

Thank you friend! Your paper art game was very cool too!

(+1)

Visuals are really cool, especially the cover art (its super cute)
I like the idea and really enjoyed playing it. Sometimes the collisions with the walls were a litlle weird (path look like you can go there but you can't).

Also if you keep working on this game, i wish i could color a little bit of the enivronment like the flowers or so

Developer

Thank you for trying the game, friend! teary eyes

Agree, a few people brought up the paths which is a shame, there was a voice in the back of my head that told me they weren’t quite right! I should listen to it more next time haha. And yeah great idea about the environment, I started playing around with that concept with the breakable/paintable walls but didn’t expand it too much! Definitely something for a new release if we ever get to it. Thanks so much!

Submitted(+1)

We have an Ari who did the artwork on our game--love to see it! haha

This was really charming! Very SNES feeling and the world/story is really pleasant. Everything worked nicely, too! The dark green being walls and the other colors being paths didn't feel very clear at first--a little bit of an adjustment might help the world's walls be a little more clear. But that's just from my perspective. Overall, this is a great entry--nice job!

Developer(+1)

WOOOO go for Ari! We don’t, but the original game concept was kinda inspired by Arrietty so it kinda stuck haha. Thank you for all your lovely words my friend, I’ll definitely check out your game too!

Submitted(+1)

Arietty! That makes sense. We were curious :)

Thanks for checking out Goggles as well! Cheers!

Submitted(+1)

This is actually impressive, the graphics are great, audio was awesome, and the game was really fun to play. I love the enemy variety and how they turn in color as you make them friendly. Only minor thing I noticed was the character unable to walk past some "walls" that were clearly the same color as the walkable terrain which i saw in few places on the first level, but that didn't stop me for completing the game :) amazing job in making this!

Developer

Wow, those are amazing words! Thank you SO much, and agree the composer and artist really cooked here! Yes, the first level had some interesting quirks unfortunately… I feel like Level 2 ended up a bit more robust somehow. Great feedback, and a good reason to go back to refine it a little!

Submitted(+1)

Omg this was so fricking cute! I love the art, music and coloring enemies instead of attacking them is so cool. Really nice  job!

Developer

Really tried to go for the cosy vibes with the colouring mechanic there, I’m glad people are enjoying it! Thanks so much friend, your game was cool!
