Ooooh I like the boulders reacting to the ground. In the second level, two boulders come at the same time and it’s a bit difficult to dodge haha, but I liked it, nice improvements! :)

I’m sure if we had a bit more scope time testing of the game with more friends, those hedges details would have been easier to spot, but honestly that’s the only thing I found that I wanted to share. The rest of the game theme, gameplay and as you said, beautiful pixel art and audio design, was perfect :) great work and congratulations to all of you! <3
Hello hello! :) Really interesting answers. The sound effect bug sounds annoying, indeed. Specially if it bugged the main mechanic, so great that you moved that out of the way to focus on the freezing mechanic! Maybe you can add a small vignette effect in the borders of the game window that indicates she’s chasing you, and the closest she is, the more dark the border is, like this:

Love the post jam updates as well. You can try playing with colors to recognize quickly the doors, like making one key silver, and the room door having a small silver detail like the knob, a silver frame, or something that you can connect quickly by the eye from far away, instead of getting close to know the room name. Or having the hotel map in the radar with small labels of each room as well, that would be cool :)

Thank you as well for appreciating my comment :) I always like to share constructive helpful things I find in games, and glad you are open to them! Congrats on the game, I will follow it post Jam! :D
Haha I understand, game Jams have those big changes in the last days, and it’s perfect as well. We found that our Rhythm game was not fun enough in the first days, and did the “hold the note” mechanic in the last day almost, and it was totally worth it. Your theme implementation with science was 100/10, so congrats :) <3
Ooooh that would give a really nice mystery touch to the ending, indeed! It’s all good, I discovered that game Jams are amazing to learn new things, boost the creativity and improve the time scopes and organization for future games we do, both personal projects and other Jams. And you achieved a really fun and theme connected experience. Really nice job! Have a great day as well :)
Awww, glad you liked it so much! We were so inspired that the ideas for each level, the songs style and the whole theme for the game came out by itself in the first day of brainstorming, and we agreed in (almost) all decisions for the game, so it was a breeze to work together haha :) thank you for playing it! <3
Hello hello! Thank you for all this points you shared, lots of them are on point, for sure! :)
-
Glad you enjoyed the music and the level designs of the notes! We had to do quick iterations because of changing mechanics (holding notes), trying to keep the first level as “Tutorial level”, and the second as a more rhythm Hip-Hop beats. We had the idea of a third level, but we didn’t reach on time :( maybe post Jam I could make a new song, let’s see!
-
Leaderboard was a really nice idea we had as well! The second button in the Main Menu was supposed to be that, but we had to move it to “Out of Scope” in our Board because of time as well :( if it’s not hard to implement (the database and API), it would be nice to check :)
-
We wanted to animate the band, at least a 2 frame switching with the beat. Same with the crowd (booping up and down with each beat), but no time for that as well :( might have been cool to add more dynamics, indeed.
-
We were talking to improve the cover art comparing with the other submissions that we liked, like making the alien-51 title green, or showing the band as the cover. I might be able to talk to the pixel artist to see if we can change it. Glad you were curious to click and discover it :)
First of all, thank you very much for your full review! Really helpful and with lots of positive and constructive feedback :) here are some points I can answer:
-
The Baguette Eiffel was the starting point of all the bizarre ideas when doing the brainstorming for the theme, everything else came from there haha. We initially thought of a Free Tour Guide that had to build a circle of tourists and bring them to strange places like this, and talk and show it to get points (might work on that idea as a test in the future for another small game).
-
The timing on the notes sometimes was a bit hard to sync perfectly, so it might be a problem of the notes itself, not the web. We are planning to improve the levels a bit post Jam :)
-
About the audio feedback: we focused on the visual feedback with the ripples, and even thought to make the note show white before disappearing to give more feedback in that part, but it’s true we could add a small drum or space sci-fi sound for the single notes and the hold notes. I personally wanted the player to enjoy the original song without much extra noises (the crowd was supposed to show up after Streak x20 with a “WOHOO!” and crowd noise, but it was out of scope / song was not going to listened well). We will look into that for post Jam as well and let you know to test it!
-
About animation of the band: another point that was out of scope, sadly :( it could be a nice addition if our pixel artist has time post Jam. She wanted to add different states of the band (like sweating and sad if there were lots of misses, and happy and playing if they were playing correctly). Lots of ideas, but such a short time, but oh well, Jams are like that haha :(
-
Really fun to see science used to show strange places. The lore with this well known mustache guy was really fun. The mechanics of each level were fun: the Flappy Bird variation for the first one, the laser maze on the second, the aim and click for the third.
-
The Boss battle was pretty similar to the first level mechanic, with the walls being laser an addition. Maybe there could be something that you could click to add the third level mechanic as well.
Really nice game, liked it a lot :)
Really fun to play each of the worlds. It felt like it was a dream one can’t escape, even if crossing lots of doors. And each level had its challenge and mechanics. The change between them was really well made. The only thing that was a bit harsh was the constant shake when killing the ships in the Arcade, made it a bit difficult to reach the 100 kills. Liked the ghosts faces showing up from the dark. Great short game, goes great with the theme :)
I liked the suspense of the whole game. As other said, it’s better to generate the fear of the unknown compared to overused jump scares, but I was a bit sad the build up of the suspense and mystery finished in a text :( I liked the potential of the lights on / off mechanic. Would be nice to see what can be added post Jam :) Nice job!
Hello! :) Thank you very much for your detailed review of the game! I am not a professional Rhythm game player either, so I think the difficulty we managed to achieve for the game is enjoyable for everyone. Glad you liked and gave it a try!
About the synchronization of the beats: as we added the “hold the note” mechanic with few time to improve the songs in the last day, this was the best we achieved some hours before the submission ended :( but after the Jam, I will try to make the notes match better some instruments of each song, thanks for the recommendation!
Have a nice day as well! :)
- I really like how the shader makes the atmosphere of the game. Horror / spooky games don’t have to be pitch black with a flashlight with batteries. Really nice work on this :)
- The “don’t blink” / line of sight mechanic is pretty good. Kind of annoying to have it so early in the game, because I still didn’t memorize the house layout, but makes the game more challenging as it doesn’t have checkpoints.
- Some kind of UI improvements for example the buttons on the phone: Radar, Inventory (shows key with name of the door), Settings (only the sound and gameplay faders), and a separated Mission section with the lore.
- It would be nice that the Maiden has a more creepy walking animation, and some rock sound effect queue when she’s walking, so you know she’s moving even without looking.
Loved the quality of art style, sounds, music, and gameplay. Perfect game for a Jam, and a really cute short story. The level designs were fun, I got lost a bit in some parts of the mazes, and had a bit of problems reading the green walls with the other green floor tiles in some parts like this:

But loved the world pixel art, parts like this were beautiful:

Amazing game, 5/5 :)
I was referring more that the player only hides when it’s in the shadow of few selected items, but doesn’t hide when behind the object itself (green zone is OK, red he sees you):

Maybe you can make the player be “behind” the book, moving the layer up on z-index, and make the safe zone be the object itself, and differentiate which object you can hide behind, and which is a platform like this:

Hope it helps with the images :)
Loved the art style, sounds, music. They all merge perfectly! The Little Prince is one of my favorite books as well <3 really fun game!
Just one note: I found it difficult to differentiate in several parts of the level if an object will cover me of being catch, because even if there’s no shadow box, some objects feel they are big enough to cover the player from the Lamplighter’s POV.
Maybe would be a nice idea to make the player object over the objects, and use that as the main cover mechanic? Something like Little Nightmares or Inside do in their games. Just a future improvement :)
This is so good! It’s like a weird mix of Super Metroid with Earthworm Jim. Loved the SFX of the weapons, and the saving animation of the fish swimming on the save pod haha.
One little tip: It’s really hard to kill some monsters without getting hit because of the horizontal shooting. I would add a diagonal way of aiming / shooting using where the mouse is positioned. Great job :)
Loved the music, SFX and the gameplay! The upgrade loop is really good. The only improvements I would suggest are:
-
The drill mechanic is a bit confusing. I feel highlighting the cubes that can be drilled when placing the mouse is better than the small yellow dot. Or make the drill affect the near blocks to the player, even if not placing the mouse on top of them. Adding a small driller SFX loop when clicking would be nice as well :)
-
Another small nice touch would be that when you die because of running out of oxygen, adding a small animation of the alien emergency warping out of the cave before going out of the cave.
Great game! Keep it up :)
