I'm bad at the game but it was a fun time. I could tell this was a Ccadori game from the Ui and UX it's a job well done

Submitted

This was fun. The UI is great, very crisp and clean. I think the dangerous waters need more warning as I'd be following the wind and end up in the dangerous waters, fighting the wind to get back out.

The pirate music enhanced the fun vibe and multiple cannon types helped give you options when going into battle. Nice game!

Developer

Thank you, Kyle! We're happy you liked it, definitely the boundaries needed more visibility

Pretty good UI design and starting tutorial!   I wish there was more theme integration of the rats into the game/story but other than that you have the workings of  a full game on your hands!

Developer(+1)

Thank you, astecarmyman, I totally agree with you! At first, our idea was about rat sailors x pirate cats and something about catnip trafficking, but we ran out of time before being able to do much with that ☹️

Loved the art and music! Sea shanty vibes are my favorite. Combat was fun, but I found myself hitting enemies down to 1% a lot, felt like they should have just sank haha. I also noticed the ultrawide grey bars, the trade off was I could see all the landmarks clearly! Great art, music, combat, controls everything! Well done.

Nice vibes and atmosphere - feels great to play. Good juice overall too. I did find the contros a little bit annoying at times (like I was constantly just figthing against the wind, but the wind wasn't really adding a strategic dimension to the game itself).

Was curious if the white/gray bars left and right of screen are supposed to be fog of war or a graphics bug?

Developer (1 edit)

Hi Genepistudios, I guess you played on an ultrawide monitor? if thats the case, probably its a graphical bug 😅

We tried implementing a fog of war in a few different ways, but it impacted the performance too much, so we removed it completely (I hope so)

But thank you for testing, hope it didn't bother your experience that much 🙏

Submitted(+1)

correct! Its my work monitor 🤫

Was good fun anyways!

hell yeah, this is great! I loved how the different islands are specialized in different upgrades and the combat is quite challenging. my first voyage was unfortunately interrupted by an enemy shit that ambushed me while I was in an island menu :( how does t he rumor mechanic work exactly? thanks for uploading, I'll add it to my favorites of this jam :)

Developer(+2)

hi thanks for the review!
The rumor mechanic is still very rudimentary. Currently you „talk“ to the islanders about a rumor, and that spawns a treasure chest in a random spot on the map an shows you the direction via an arrow. In the future this could be expanded to for example a rumor about a big spanisch treasure fleet arriving. Which you than could decide to attack before they leave the playing field. Or maybe there is a rumor about some pirate treasure stored on one of those small lonely islands. Or some shipwrecked people which you can save. All sort of tiny quests could be started this way. But without much time, it is currently very basic :)

great game, had tons of fun, by the end of my run i was zooming across the seas

Avast, this was a pleasure! Felt dangerous at first when I was getting sniped from off-screen, but then I upgraded my range and damage and I became the danger. Strong work! Highly polished, me hearties.

Developer

Thank you for the feedback, nedredmond! The big ships can be a real problem in the beginning, but I'm glad you got over it!

Incredibly fun, definitely the most fun I've had on a game jam, its  easy to pick up simple to understand . Love the game juice in combat. yeah this is my favorite so far! great job. my only thing to note is that the out of bounds damage happens fast and is brutal, but my ship is slow to revert direction. So what should feel like a "don't break out of the game" warning is more of a "you're gonna die now" message lol Great job though!!

Developer

Yes, you are correct. Unfortunately, this feature was implemented halfway through the end of the jam, and I (the programmer) didn't have much time to polish it.

It's very hard to run from it, especially if the wind is against your ship.

But I'm glad you managed to have fun still! Thank you for the feedback!

YOHOHO! Arr what a nice game! Loved sailing around the sea, and fight and plunder me some cheese! Good Job! Also loved the music!

Whenever there's a new game from CCadori I'll make sure to check it out, and this time working in a team!

Some notes that I took:

  • The visuals are beautiful as always and the music was a great match, so hats off for Tim as well (I kept the game running just to listen to it while writing this).
  • I liked the way you presented the instructions, the images helped me understand everything in under a minute. The only thing I was kind of missing from both the in-game guide and the page is that you move with WASD. I know it's intuitive, but for a short time for the first game I was confused and due to the slow movement against the wind, I thought you can only move in the wind's direction, at that landed me in the danger zone.
  • Others already pointed out, but the danger zone could use some more indication, it's easy to cross the line, especially in a heated combat, and since the enemy is not affected by it, it can be frustrating to sink because of that.
  • Once I figured out the movement and got some practice (and upgrades), the snipirate life was great. Due to their damage, the large ships felt like a leap in challenge, but it felt rewarding when I could take down one of them.
  • My favourite part of the art were the islands, along with their names. I could imagine a short sentence description for each to further improve the vibes, but I understand that UI space is expensive. I liked how the island interaction panel just showed up when I was in the vicinity, but it could also be a bit distracting when I'm in the middle of a combat. I didn't get into the economy part yet, I was happy to survive.
  • I'm not sure about the spawning logic, but sometimes it felt like the whole ocean is empty then the next moment I was surrounded by 3-4 enemies. Not necessarily an issue, but it felt unfair at times.

Overall, it's probably the best game I played this jam so far and I already see it winning. You heard it from me first!

Developer(+2)

thanks very much for the detailed feedback!

I did the how to play screen on the last evening, and you are right i totally didn‘t think of the movement with WASD :)   Will add this with the next update.

I choose and implement the music and SFX. as soon as i found the music i directly know this was a banger soundtrack. Tim got 15€ for that from me, well deserved

I like how carlos has already a brand of „making high quality games“  I think that is true ;)

yeah enemy spawn logic and especially the visibility of the border area need some improvement.

I actually went on and bought the pack as well, it will be useful for some future projects or our tabletop rpg sessions.

Thank you so much for the kind comments, and for appreciating our work, vpeter! I'm happy to see you again at a Godot Wild Jam! 😊

Overall, I agree with your points (the audio design is really good, thanks to Ollibanjo)

But I don't think it's that simple, there are many good games in this edition, including yours!

Submitted(+1)

Of the many ship themed games I played so far, this one feels the most polished. The combat is really simple but fun. Could definitely see this being expanded with more weapon types and story for the pirate lovers out there!

Developer

Hi Johny, we're big fans of navigation games too! Especially Ollibanjo!

Thank you for the feedback!

The world needs more pirate games.  This was a fun one.  The big ships do a lot of damage so my favourite cannon was the ranged one.  First time I've ever played as a pirate sniper.

The art, UI, and theme all work together well to build a nice piratey atmosphere, nice work!  Although, maybe the dangerous waters could be indicated a little clearer with darker blue water or something - I got damaged a lot by accident.

Hi hoodscott,

Yes! The solution of limiting the map in this way ended up being adopted near the end of the project, and I ended up not being able to visually delimit it, but I admit I also struggled with that during testing 😅

Thanks for the feedback!

Cool game! I enjoyed my time as a pi rat :) Would love to see this be developed further! Well done

Developer

Thanks Whataboi, always good to see you here 😊

I really enjoyed the wind and anchor mechanic! Nice work!

Nice game jam entry! The visuals, music, and sound effects are great. Combat and player movement feel good too.

The only thing that bothered me was how the islands interact with the ship. When I was fighting and sailing around an island, the UI interaction kept popping up. Maybe it could be changed to activate only when pressing a key.

Overall, it’s a really fun game. I like it a lot!

Developer

Hi JaMe, the island's UI does indeed obstruct the map view at times.

This happened because initially, the panel was small, but it grew larger than planned.

Thanks for the feedback!

Really lovely art and such a cool idea here, had a lot of fun playing this, would love to see this taken further!
