Really fun, quite polished, visually consistent, all in all a great jam entry, congrats!
Basically a perfect jam game. Fun, unique, beautiful, and challenging. You did a fantastic job here, you should be proud. :)
Love the simple aesthetic and punchy sfx. Controls felt a bit weird for some reason. Maybe tank controls or even mouse would be better. It took me a few tries to get far enough that I could wrap around a group of red things. I was hoping for more of a reward when I ate them. I would remove the timer. I feel the game is difficult enough without it. Well done!
your feedback helped me realize there was actually something weird going on with the controls — the body of the snake kinda pulled back on the head, which made it misbehave quite a lot… I’m not sure if that’s exactly what you were experiencing, but I greatly appreciate your feedback anyway.
I’ll definitely add tank controls, I think that would feel much better. and I’ll consider mouse controls — I’m a bit skeptical, but we’ll see.
reward for clearing red things… that’s an interesting thought, I’ll try to come up with something.
I get your complaint about the timer, it’s not great, I mainly added it to prevent the game from going on forever. I’m working on changing the entire timer/hunger dynamic to make the game more approachable, hoping to introduce a more interesting difficulty curve.
thank you very much!
So much good has already been said that I’d echo, so I’ll just add that I found the snake’s wiggly movement delightful.
Movement feels great, and there’s a lovely twist on Snake.
I enjoyed the minimalist art style, which perfectly serves the gameplay.
Well done!
love this take on snake, has a good gameplay loop, certainly feels like a cool little game i'd stubble across one day and adore. I can see this going very far if you continue it outside the jam!
The music and movement (hold to speed up) combined made it feel more frantic, and engaging
Weirdly fun!
What a unique twist on the snake genre!
Art - I loved how the art direction felt consistent - crispy pixels and fonts with complementing 8bit soundtrack!
Movement - the movement was smooth and fun, it felt good!
Mechanics - having to balance wanting to grow, becoming more hungry and eating yourself was a great way of introducing depth! It made for interesting situations when I had to result to auto-cannibalism in order to survive!
Having your body turn into spikes and circling them was a really nice addition, too.
Attention to details - I liked how apples can move.
This is a very solid entry!
I am apparently not very good at self-consumption. That's... probably a good thing?
I'll echo the other people saying that its probably a good thing to tutorialize your main mechanic in the game at some point :] Its a neat concept though and an interesting twist on a classic. Since unlike in regular snake this one has a turning radius, I wonder if the controls would be better or worse with tank controls?
By the way, often games that go for retro aesthetics can become either unreadable or a bit of an eyesore, but this one feels neat and deliberate with its use of colors. Nice!
yeah, I’ve learned my lesson — it’s a bad idea to be vague about mechanics in a jam game lol~
I was actually considering tank controls, but I decided against it because I thought it would be unapproachable for some players. I might add optional tank controls in the post-jam update, I think it could be fun.
thank you for the kind words!
Polished and creative entry. One feedback I have is that you have to keep your eye at the bar at the top to know when you're gonna lose. Maybe the snake changing colors could be used as way of warning the player when they're about to lose.
thank you! that’s a great idea about changing colors, I’ll add it in the post-jam update :)
Fun game. I liked how the red things gravitated towards each other to make it easier to encircle them. I had to read other comments to understand the ouroboros eating its own tail tactic. The movement felt really smooth. Loved the glitchy old school sfx and music. Nice work!
Super fun game! Crazy impressive work for only two days, it's a nicely polished experience. I like the twist on snake and it's pretty engaging to play and try to beat your highscore, I think a leaderboard would've been great for this. I was just watching the gif of you playing the game and I didn't realize eating your own tail filled up the life bar, so I think maybe some more tutorializing could help a bit.. I'll have to go back and see how I do with this new knowledge. Overall really solid entry, great work
thanks for playing! I would have loved to do a leaderboard, but alas.
I just checked out your VOD, it was very interesting to see how you played — that you avoided biting yourself, which is the main twist of the game (y’know, like the ouroboros). that’s my bad for not explaining things at all.
a couple of tips in case you do try again:
I wanted the game to be a bit mysterious to encourage experimentation, but I realize it ended up being way too obscure, and I think most players miss out on the main gimmick of circling red spikes to score big combos.
I appreciate the feedback! do let me know if end up trying again :)
This is a wonderful game. I love that it is an evolution on snake, but enough to make it its own game and own fun challenges. I would play ALOT of this is it was expanded.
thanks for the submission! it's a great game, at first i thought it was a simple snake game, but there's way more to it
Great job! It has a lot of polish, and you can tell you put in a lot of work to get it there.
This is a really cool take on snake - not being limited to four directions, and the hunger timer is really cool.
Very well made! I thought it was just going to be snake at the start, but then learning that when you hurt yourself you create obstacles, then seeing from one of your screenshots that you can circle and eat all those obstacles makes it a really fun version of snake! I can definitely say I'll favourite this page and hop onto it when bored instead of normal snake! One thing I would say is maybe add in a description to the game showing off that you can do this stuff, I nearly left after the first run until I randomly started looking into the screenshots and realised there's a lot more to it! (P.S, best high score bet no-one can beat it)
thanks for playing, I really appreciate the feedback!
like I mentioned when we talked earlier, I wanted to keep things vague to encourage exploration, and I thought “ouroboros” was enough of a hint for the circling … but I now realize it’s too obscure for a jam game like this. I’ve updated the game page to be more explicit about the circling, and I’ll add a GIF to show it off tomorrow. thanks again!!
(PS: nice score! the key is to go for big circle combos~)
Oh true I never even though about the actual meaning of ouroboros, that makes a lot more sense now! (I was just thinking of the ship from Half-Life lmao)
Great work! I also though it was snake but then the diagonals and spline nature really add a fun twist.
Very addective, I thought it was regular snake game but this game proven it's the dark souls but for snake games, Good job!
the dark souls of snake games hahahahah, thanks for playing!!
