I keep loving your artwork! I did find it extremely difficult:

Fun: Yeah its cool that you continued your story, I did found it very hard

Core elements: Its perfect its litterally gain ground in your artstyle wich is amazing

Polished: did not encounter any bugs, I did notice that your spider can also interact with your own bullets wich is sometimes anoying as it follows you and you can do some back and forth shooting.

SoundFx: nothing too special but they did the job

UI: super cool with the arcade machine

Well done!

Developer

Thank you for the feedback. I left a lot of the original in, which meant it was still just as difficult, I think it could use a bit more work to make it easier to get into and ramp up. Thanks for playing.

It's impossible to dodge these skeletons! ))

Very funny game, I liked it. I didn't notice the characters that needed to be saved at first, I didn't understand what this bunch of pixels was) But in the following rounds I already knew what to look for.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Yeah the game takes a bit to get used to, it could use some more work to make it easier to get into.

This game is soo good. Im a big fan of the crunkle universe :) At first i found myself dying a couple of times until I got the hang of it (and, tbh, until i found the grenade character. That one carried me :D ) I like it, that i really have to save the characters, and not even picking them up and killing the last enemy counts.
The only nitpick i have, are the sprites of the rescuable characters. At first I had a bit of a struggle finding them, because I was so focused on the enemies. But thats really just a tiny thing. Real good job overall, love it!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and for the feedback!

The saving the characters is carried from the original, I have an idea on how to improve it, but I didn't have time to implement it.

The rescuable character visibility is another one of those, I suppose I could have done "something" pretty quick, but I never got around to it, other things were ranked higher in importance to me... like spending two hours on the the intro arcade animations... lol

Obviously the art and sound design is great so props for that. I did really enjoy this, although I did find it very difficult. I appreciated the ability to restart the same level you are on though, and that definitely helped to alleviate the difficulty issue. The combat generally felt good, although I think the spider was blocking projectiles? I'm really not sure. The UI was super clean and stylized, overall incredible job.

Developer

Thank you for the feedback and thanks for playing! The spider blocking the bullets is not a bug, but now I feel like it's bad. I have a fix for it, but will wait until after judging to upload it.

Submitted(+1)

Thank you for letting the player "restart" on the same level with the same progress instead of having to start over. That way I actually finished the game. I had a very hard time trying to rescue anybody, and even when I did they died in the next level. Game looks awesome btw!

An annoyance for me was that Violet's spider blocks her projectiles, resulting in making quick turn around + shoot impossible, since it'll remove the projectile right away. This would make sense if the spider also blocked enemy projectiles (making the spider more useful) but this is sadly not the case ;(

Developer

Thanks for playing and thanks for the feedback!

Yeah, that is definitely a bug, the bullet shouldn't be stopped by the spider.

Submitted(+1)

I'm not sure if this is intentional or not but the game has a secret new-game-plus mode.

Developer(+1)

Yeah, you keep your crew on the next run through. Can keep going round and round.

Submitted(+1)

That's awesome. I should add something like that to Stoneseeker.

I love crunkle series!

I really enjoyed this one! but It was extremely hard to rescue other characters (impossibly difficult in my case :D)

But I managed to defeat the crunkle boss! I just wish I had enough skill to manage other characters... I liked that you didn't implement permadeath though... because I died a lot :D :D :D

One nitpick - I noticed that "Violet" character has a pet from previous round but I didn't find how to use it... Would be nice to see some mechanics for it as well :) Also, shooting diagonally is quite challenging (maybe just my skill issue)

very classy game, loved it!

Developer

Thank you! And thanks for playing!

The girl's pet is the same as before, can crunch through boxes and run over any terrain, but the utility was lightened since I reduced the range on the ball so it wasn't as useful. The diagonal shooting was too closely matched to the original and I didn't get around to making it easier on the player. I feel like this would be a great twin stick shooter game.

Thanks for the feedback.

Developer

Oh. Noticed you never used the special button during your playthrough. It's Enter on the KB or the Right Face Button on the controller. That's how the ball works, and the specials for the other characters if you can rescue them. And like the original, if you kill all the mobs before rescuing the character, it doesn't count as a rescue, you have to walk them to the exit before killing all the mobs.

Nice :) I might get back and replay :) I really wanted to try other characters as well!!! but in my first playthrough I got pwned quickly after rescuing one :D

Submitted(+1)

Damn the music slaps, and the art and the animation are beautiful as ever. The Gain Ground elements are also about as faithful as they could get, even the crazy level of difficulty is on-brand. I really enjoyed how many different characters there were and how their specials were all somehow unique. Honestly, if this game doesn't get into the top 3, I will riot. And if I get paired against you, I will be saying my prayers.

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! And thanks for playing! I feel like this is an even tighter round than last time, so many great games, it wouldn't hurt my feelings at all if you or pretty much everyone else got placed higher than me. I'd just be sad I didn't to continue.

Submitted(+1)

Idk what everyone means about difficulty... after 10 tries I got the game 100% (still with 4 deaths during crunkle fight. So I guess 90%) For real though, this game is such a vibe. It feels like gain ground, but indie.  This game was addicting. On a personal level, I wish the scoring worked slightly different, but I know with the time crunch functionality is king. Still, a score for time a level was completed, or for how many characters you completed it with would have improved this so much in terms of grinding for a high score.

Still, the fact that the only thing I can even think about improving was a secondary element says a lot about what you managed to accomplish. 11/10, great job.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and thanks for the feedback. Yeah, scoring was started but not finished, I didn't get around adding in the time bonus. Had a ton of things left to do on this one.

Submitted(+1)

Brilliant game and really well presented and I especially like the animations of the enemy deaths. I liked playing it on my gamepad controller and it's great fun seeing what the different character abilities were. Progress wise, I was doing really well until right near the end where I lost all of my strong characters and had to defeat the last boss with violet which was tricky as her range was not so good and the boss attacks were hard to dodge but I succeeded in the end with a big smile on my face. I'm sure my stats would be much better on a second playthrough but this is what I got on my first try

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! The difficulty is a little off, I didn't spend much time on it and ran out of time to get into it. I think that's a good score for your first playthrough.

Submitted(+1)

Excellent game! Really captures the essence of the original game. Managed to make it to the end with 2 deaths overall. Grenades OP :D

Great job!

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yeah, grenades are OP.

Such a big smile came across my face when the title screen loaded up, and the music kicked in. Let out a "Hell Yeah".  So awesome, well worth the time you put into that. I think you nailed all the criteria for this round. Like last time, the  vibes of this game are right up my street and I thought all the elements for this rounds task were there to see. It was a little challenging, that was the only draw back for me. I was struggling to keep hold of the multiple characters and played most of the game with Violet. Still, really great game and another insane entry from you. You're going to the finals. Great job man!

Developer

Thank you so much, and thanks for playing! The difficulty was something I was worried about since I can't tell how hard it is after playing it so many times. I'm sorry I ran out of time to get that sorted.

Submitted(+1)

It's one of those things, you play something over and over and to you it's a piece of cake. If you made it too easy, you'd get the same feedback, just the other way round haha. All the elements you needed were in there, it's just a balancing thing. Still had fun playing!

Submitted(+1)

Love the art style, and it's a great continuation of your round 2 game. The arcade elements in the title screen look amazing. The character variety is great, but I mostly used the starting character because I kept dying. The game feels a little difficult, especially since it's hard to attack enemies in high areas, and their bullets are very fast compared to the character's speed. Other than that, the game is great and very polished.

Developer

After playing the original and my game several hundred times, it gets difficult to gauge the difficulty. And I ran out of time to adjust things.

Sorry it was too difficult, thanks for playing.

Submitted(+1)

DANG this game is really tough!
But Im sooo happy to see more games like mine that are taking their original game and continuing the story with the Gain Ground-like!

I like the abilities of the new characters, and I like that the MC of the previous one is just one of the abilities you can get! Didnt really face any technical issues other than the enemies feeling a little too strong for their own good lol

Developer(+1)

Thank you. The original was tough too, it was hard to strike a good balance with the amount of time I had. Thanks for playing.

Submitted(+1)

Nice intro and nice main menu!

I think this definitely gives a lot of gain grounds vibes, I really like that you gave it a spin to be in your game universe, really cool.

One bug I found, when you kill all the enemies it does not rescue the characters that are following you. This made it so I lost some of the actually good characters and I ended up just with Violet in the end.

Good audio, good UI, besides the bug I think everything was very polished, I had fun. ðŸŒŸ

  • Score: 700
  • Deaths: 31
  • Continues: 14
Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and thank you!

That's not a bug, that's how the original works, you have to walk them to the exit to rescue them. As a bonus, if you continue, you can start the second quest with whoever you had left at the end.

Submitted(+1)

Haha oops, you are right it does not make sense though, I guess the original game was not logical 😅

Developer(+2)

Yeah, I wasn't sure about it, but went ahead with it. If I move it along, I might add a timer after all the mobs are killed to give the player a chance to kill all the mobs and still rescue the other character.
