Wow! Great Job, the sheer amount of characters is very impressive. I found the combat to be rather slow, but if i recall correctly, gain ground was also rather slow. Great Work!

Amazing job, I like the variaty of characters and the menus are simply amazing. I did find the game a bit overwhelming but then again so was the original.

Great work!

Very accurate recreation of the original game!

I may have lacked a little originality, but that was not the goal of the round )

(the number of characters and variety is simply amazing)

Really awesome game. I love the variety of characters and abilities and the UI was very stylized and cool. The art in general was pretty great. The game is incredible difficult though imo, the enemies felt kind of spongy and took a while to kill even if you were just shooting them from a position in which they can't hurt you. I thought the sfx and music were cool and crunchy and overall it was very fun so really great job.

Really great game and very faithful to the original with a lot of enhancements. I like the abilities each character has with the ability to aim for each being a really nice addition. Progress wise, I got 7 of the characters and I very nearly defeated the rock boss, but I got hit by one of his rocks right at the end and it took all my life away and I only had the spearman left at that point. I feel like the rock could have destroyed on impact and my characters should have hurt the enemies a little bit more but other than that it's really great and I'm amazed at how many diverse characters there is

Thanks for playing and thanks for your comments. Stats balancing is something I am already thinking about. And a “continue” option like the original resetting the score and initial cast of characters.

This game has so much content... And it is full of juice!

Very stylish and atmospheric!

But it is so hard! even the tutorial :D I was struggling a lot with complexity. Partially I think it was controls, sometimes it feels that shooting doesn't reach the target and its hard to understand why, also the aim doesn't seem to show where the projectile will go. I think you can remove the aim, because it might be a bit confusing because I would expect the projectile to hit that aim, but sometimes when aim is across the fence the character cannot shoot there.

Rather than that it feels extremely polished and thought through game. Incredible work!

UI, sound, animations, all fit together very well and really great job on putting it all together. One small nitpick - is that not always the portrait is the same with the character in game, for example the archer has a hoodie but in game he has a hat with a feather.

I think this was the first game I played that was actually harder than the original gain ground lol. Super super tricky, characters feel squishy and weak. Otherwise, this is a spiritual successor to gain ground in every way! I love the idea of having two characters out in the field, although outside of the tutorial, this isn't really practical. I think with less enemies and more focus on level design for those restrictions could have been really cool.

Everything else is super polished! this already feels like a full release in my opinion. Great job!

I think I softlocked the game when I exited the level with a character at the same time as a projectile killed the last enemy. Stuck on a black screen now :'( I think I made it around halfway through the game? Had roughly half the characters unlocked.

Very cool take on the original! Lots more range and variety, and I really like the mechanic where you can swap characters mid-game.

Combat feels a bit spongey at times; long range allies usually deal less damage but since they outrange the enemy it only takes more time with no threat. The pebblethrower is especially strong because of this, but at the same time it takes ages to kill a far away enemy. Not sure how to balance this, though. Also I don't exactly understand how the fire boomerang works lol but it was fun trying to curvesnipe enemies :D

Anyway, great game :D well done!

Thanks for your feedback. That is a scenario that I did not consider and your assessment is probably on point. Sorry about that. I will add it to the growing list of tasks for after the voting.

I really like how this feels like almost a sequel to Gain Ground!

Certain elements of the controls were a challenge to me, but I love the variety of the gameplay and the level of effort that went into the game!

To be honest I think a bit of a confinement on the control scheme might have helped. Not the biggest deal though

Tough game, had to take it slow to get through it. It was fun.

You got the core elements of the game in there, it was polished, the music and sfx were great, and the UI was great. All around great work.

Excellent work. I love the inclusion of being able to switch between multiple characters out in the field at once. I almost ended up going that way with my game as well, so I'm glad to see someone went through with it. Also the characters feel straight out of the source material. Honestly, you could tell me this is a sequel to Gain Ground and I'd believe you.

Great UI and character design. I can't believe you manage to make so many characters. The game is fun but feels a little too hard for me. I feel in some stages I was overwhelmed by the enemies. Still amazing game.

Developer

Thanks for playing. I spent a long time building a framework to control the characters and projectiles. They all use the same script and are loaded from a JSON-like file. Then it was a matter of finding some artwork and drawing the projectiles. Like some other commenters said it still needs some balancing between the different characters and enemies but I ran out of time. The good thing is that I am confident I can adjust it with not too much effort (but lots of playtesting) after the jam.

This definitely feels like gain ground!

Some ideas for small quality of live improvements:

  • The player movement speed is sometimes way too slow. Especially with the magic lady that throws fireballs + dynamite.
  • Some of the hitboxes of the weapons are too small
  • Why does the player do so little damage but the enemies take a big chunk of your health 😅

I managed to kill the rock boss without him even doing anything, I just blew him up with dynamite. It still says 2 enemies left, not sure if it a bug.

I managed to complete the game on the first take, I mostly just did escape because I'm not skilled enough to kill all enemies. I almost went game over on the level with a lot of archers in front of the escape zone / the last level before the final boss

You implemented so many characters and levels. Very nice game 🌟

Thanks for your feedback. I spent too much time working on the framework for the projectile movement and I neglected balancing the rest of the character stats. And some projectiles are a little overpowered at the moment, but I think that was also a cool part of the original game I wanted to keep where certain characters will be best for some situations and not rescuing or losing them complicates later stages.

Really well made and polished, love how the UI looks and the theming with the skulls. Difficulty felt impossibly hard until I realized that you're not always supposed to kill all enemies, but just escape. It still felt a bit hard, and therefor I didn't make it further than 4 levels. I did skip and check the first boss, and it looks like you've spent countless hours on this. Well done!

P.S. Using the escape key as an input is a bad idea in web games if you want to be able to play them well in fullscreen.

Thanks for playing. Good point on using the escape key. I will indicate in the instructions that Del would be the preferred key instead. Backspace is also supported.
