The background music simply emphasizes the trouble and creeping impending doom towards the protagonist. Also the pixel art is reminiscent of the retro arcade games.

The fact that this game is made from scratch without libraries whatsoever makes it more impressive.

Generally, having that humongous bat tailing you for eternity is haunting (glad that you can make it out alive in 300 score).

Submitted

The game looks really impressive for a game made from scratch in 3 days. Really nice job!  I also love the pixel art graphics you made, especially the one after you win the game.

I passed the game and I can say that it was a lot of fun, it's simple and it works, also the music is good!

Developer

Thank you for your feedback, I'm glad you liked it. The music is made by Cyber Squib, if you want to listen to the rest of his work here is his spotify :

This was so cool! I think this is one of my favorites in the entire jam. The limitation could use work but it was so creative. Watching the vampire sneak up on me freaked me out. Was super cool!

Developer

Hello, I am very happy that you liked the game! Thank you for your opinion. Is there anything you would like to see in the game?

Submitted

It must have been so hard without an engine! I commend you and pity you for your impressive hard work! If you ever wanna switch to an engine, Unity uses a language called C#, which is very similar to javascript. The art is good, but could use some polish. I recommend having more concrete shading when doing pixel art. Using multiple shades for shading pixel art makes it look kinda muddy. I also recommend using lospec for nice looking color palettes.

Developer

Hello, thank you very much. I'm going to look at C#, I knew it but I didn't know it could be compared to Javascript! It's sure that a game engine would accelerate the creation process!

For the art, I'm a beginner, your advices are precious. If I understand correctly you advise me to accentuate the shading, and to use a predefined color palette ?

Submitted

You understand me perfectly! I recommend looking into benbonk's art style. Its similar to yours, but more polished.

Developer

Great, I have pretty bad English so I wasn't sure. I'm going to watch BenBonk, it looks interesting because it's also about gamedev!

I liked the game! I thought it was a fun short little romp escaping the vampire bat in an attempt to escape. Rocks are a nice obstacle to avoid especially when they begin getting numerous later on, Although more variety i.e. Larger rocks would have been nice.

The powerups are helpful, Except the Pickaxe which I have noted causes the rocks to fly either left or right, sometimes right underneath you slowing you down a bit. The Bible (Or Holy Book) keeping the bat away was cool, although I swear it got less potent as the game went on, which is not a complaint by any means. And the Sprint potion I feel like could have been longer duration for less speed, as I found myself running into rocks as soon as I picked it up.

Graphically it's a nice 8bit style, I do think the text is a bit illegible when it comes to certain characters however, ultimately I think it looks good, Rocks are easy to identify while also looking natural. Items are vibrant enough to spot.

Music can be a little bit repetitive, but overall fitting.

Anyway you did a great job on the game. I offer you one massive cookie to counter all the coffee.

Hello, thanks for your opinion and your compliments! I'm going to work on more variants in the obstacles, in the jam I ran out of drawing time, because for the code, it's modular and so it's easy to integrate new ones.

I'm going to review the pickaxe, it's not very useful and to be honest, I added it a bit in a hurry a few hours before the end. I thought it was not very useful but I did not know that it could turn against the player, thanks for the information. For the potion I thank you for the feedback, it's true that it accelerates too much and makes dodging impossible. I'll fix it!

I accept this huge cookie with pleasure!

Good day to you

First off, I’m impressed you did this with just vanilla JS! I’ve used Phaser before and even that was a pain. I’m a professional software engineer and I still dislike making games without an editor!

As for the game itself, the art is cool and the animations are solid. The gameplay itself operates well and I didn’t find any bugs (a small thing would be that if an item spawns near the edge, half of the art is off-screen. That could easily be fixed by making sure the width of the sprite isn’t off-screen when doing item generation).

I do feel the game was missing one feature, like maybe a way to jump over certain obstacles or a different obstacle than a rock. Perhaps an enemy that slides across the screen.

Besides that, great game, thanks for making it!

Developer

Hello, I thank you for your detailed advice, it is quite rare and very valuable for a beginner like me. And more from a professional : )

I should probably learn phaser.js, for now I like to be able to understand what I'm doing and how my game works in depth, but for jams it makes me very slow...

I had put margins in the generation of the position in abcyss of my items, I must have missed something. I'll fix it, thanks for the warning!

For the gameplay I agree, there is something missing. I had some ideas but I didn't have enough time. I'm very afraid to add concepts that would make the gameplay unclear or too complicated, I hope that with practice I will be able to estimate the value of an idea and what it implies.

Small question, I've already seen the assets of your game and I like them, where can I get access to them ?

Fantastic assets. I used the 16-bit fantasy.

Fun and great game.

Very fun and simple concept! Well done. Would be better if there was some kind of increasing difficulty.

Developer

Hello, thank you for your feedback. It's surprising that you didn't find that the difficulty increases, because normally the speed increases very clearly with time, which should make the game more complicated at the end. It's not the case when you play? I'm interested to see if there is a bug

Submitted

I didn't really notice it. Seemed pretty easy to finish on the first try

Developer

Okay, I must have made the game too easy. I'll try to do better next time : )

Submitted

It's hard to get right during a jam without some external feedback. For a game like this I would have personally gone with an endless score and brutally increasing difficulty that will become impossible in a few minutes

Developer

Basically it was infinite, but I was afraid that people wouldn't like it since the game wouldn't have had a goal.

Straight forward and with good music to set the mood, good jog! ;)

I only have two little things to say, first I don't understand exactly what the book does (doubling the points you get I guess?) and second the font used in the texts is a little difficult to understand

Developer(+1)

Hi, thanks a lot for the feedback. The book pushes the vampire back to the bottom and blocks him as long as he does, I agree it's not very clear, I'll have to add some visual effects. For the font, I made my game on 100px times 100px, so the font is really not practical but I did not find better. I think that 200px would not have done any harm.Good day

Nice and simple game! I’d say I enjoyed the music the most. Keep up the good work

Developer

Thank, the music was made by Cyber Sqib, if you want to hear more from him :

Amazing game! Super simple but very clever and enjoyable, with incredible music too, loved it! I managed to hit 300 on the second attempt.  Keep it up man! btw, if you have spare time i'd love to hear some feedback about my game too

Submitted

Cute little game - the music is a banger, holy crap. I liked the difficulty, it was not too hard, but also not trivial. Had a moment where I thought "maybe I take this speed potion, even though I will hit a rock because of it, it'll be worth".

Sadly, I don't really see the use of the limitation? Maybe I missed something.

Great job for making this in pure JS - you have more patience than me, hah. (Btw the game loaded instantly for me and I encountered no bugs)

Developer

Hello, thank you for the feedback. I'm glad that you enjoyed the game and that you could experience the gameplay dilemmas, that was the goal. For the music I agree with you, it's really great, it's the work of Cyber Sqib.

For the limitation I made a mistake, the idea was that the character bleeds but I didn't develop this part of the game, so in the end the limitation is only in the narrative "the vampire follows the player thanks to the blood". I will do better next time : )

It's really good that you didn't have any bug, towards the end I didn't have time to test too much, it's a miracle that everything works.

Small question, did you manage to reach the end, if yes in how long about? (I have difficulty to estimate the time of available games)

Submitted

I did reach the end. At first I thought the game was endless and quit around ~250, but then I saw that the end is at 300 and restarted. I made it right away, but I did have some close calls.

And same here with the limitation, I wanted to do much more with it and it sort of became ' blood "can" be bad, I guess'. Oh well, such is the nature of game-jams. I always over-scope.

like this game. Reminds me of boulder dash from crash bandicoot, did see a little hiccup where the menu popped up for a split second mid game

Hello, thank you very much. I didn't know boulder dash crash bandicoot but it's true that there are similarities, it's cool. The menu appeared in the middle, it's strange, normally it appears at 300 of score, but before there should be an end screen. Did you reach the end ? or is it really a bug ?

fun to play, nice game

Thank, dont hesitate if you notice any bug or if you have any advices to give
