Simple but well done and original gameplay :)

The art could be better more coherent. The zoomed-in effects makes it adhere to the theme well.

I don’t like the gray shadow on the buttons though, It feels out of touch. I think it would look better without? And maybe shade the green with a darker green as a contour.

Good that you found time to add some music and sound effects. Helps making the game feel even more dynamic.

Overall it’s a real good job!

Thanks for the detailed review, I really appreciate that.  The button are made by me but are I think the only asset that was re-used from another game.  I wasn't thinking it originally but I'll update that based on your advice.  The zoom issue seems to be on everyone's mind and I'll definitely be changing that in the near future.  Thanks for playing and I appreciate the comments!

You’re welcome :) I think the zoom is actually nice for the theme but maybe a tad bit too strong.

Anyway feel free to add me on Discord (VikFro#4956) if you want more feedback / help in the future!

Nice concept, responsive controls, and definitely fits the theme! I like how there are kind of two ways of playing it: (1) super fast reflexes and (2) slow and steady, waiting to jump to the other side until you see the frog.

It would be fun to add a frog eating animation or similar when you run out of lives :D

Developer

Glad you enjoyed it. Yes you can definitely go slow! At first I wanted a timer to avoid it and rush the player but then thought hmm let's see if anyone plays it slow. Good eye! And a gulping animation is on the way at some point.

Submitted

loved the game concept.. react fast..

hmm.. guessing u might be skater..

input controls are smooth & audio of the insect is good

Also  good for skateboard based gameplay too

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing. I use to skateboard back in the day but now it's just longboard. But indeed the reminder is there.

Pill Bugs (Woodlice where I'm from) are one of my favourite bugs; instant points for that!

That aside, that frog is more cute than it has any right to be and I kinda want to let it eat me lol.

I like how you integrated the "Seamless" wildcard.

Easy enough to pick up and play, and I liked how the player can actually roll on the hills somewhat, as they should be able to! But I would echo the same statement others have made regarding the camera - unless your goal is to encourage the player to have quick reactions, then it works pretty well, actually.

Good work for your first jam!

Developer(+1)

Glad you liked it and yes those bugs are great! The zoom does indeed require quicker reaction but I will be adjusting that based on the feedback. Not sure how yet, perhaps it will zoom closer as the points get higher. I'll play around with it. Thanks for playing.

Nice, simple, unique and very fun game.  At first I didn't notice the frog maybe because it's too zoomed in. I forgot the name of this bug, I used to catch one of these when I was a kid lol. Great work for your first game jam.

Developer

You're right the zoom is the main issue. It creates the need for faster reaction but it goes a bit too far. Definitely I'll take the advice for future updates. Thanks for playing!

I love the little rustling sounds it makes as it walks.  The slurping sounds are pretty fun too. I found it a bit too difficult to avoid the frog since the camera is so zoomed in. Very original idea, great job!

Developer

I really enjoyed doing the audio recordings, glad you liked them.  I'll also adjust the zoom in the future.  Thanks for playing!

Love the sonic vibe. Animations and movement of the pill bug where  smooth and made the experience of playing really fun.

The main menu was a little confusing, because of the camera position some elements are hidden you have to move the bug to see them, is a nice effect but it can create some confusion.

I suggest to zoom out the camera to have more visibility.

Overall is a fun and original game, well done.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing.  The camera for the menu is definitely on it's way out in the near future update!  Or at least I'll have to adjust that.

First of all, the graphics and sound were great! Really like the grass and pill bug (which we call "roly-pollies" where I am from haha). Second, I ESCAPED by jumping to the left at the start mwahahaha. Good job on the game!

Developer

No way you escaped? I made that wall pretty tall (the one with my horrible wall texture). Thanks for trying that and letting me know. I'll be adjusting that when I update it. The grass was a bit tedious to make. Several photos from the yard, add transparency, and copy and paste overlapping dozens of times according to the shape of the bezier I made for the level. The audio was more fun. And thanks for playing!

Cute and very in keeping with the theme, controls felt responsive. I do wonder if zooming  the camera out just a bit might make it easier to react to the frog without diminishing the challenge?

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you're thinking about the zoom issue.  Initially it was zoomed out and felt too easy.  But I'll definitely play around with that or even have some adjustable zoom setting perhaps based on difficulty.  Thanks for playing!

Nice little game :) I loved the audio and feeding the little bug was so relaxing. I kept wondering if there is a way to win! :)

Developer

A game with winning?  Hmm. haha yes indeed that should have been added.  I'm thinking of added something in the near future, like an online leader board or a progression to another level with more "enemies".  Thanks for playing!

Audio is great! Definitely a tiny world!  It's also very simple, all you do is eating leaves and avoiding the frog.  The pillbug roll so well that I keep want to take it somewhere else and have an adventure with it and then realize I am kind of stuck in this u shape hole with the frog in the middle. I played the window version and noticed some of the text were cut off, the actual game also look super zoomed in, so maybe they are related.

Developer

Thanks for noticing the zoom.  It was initially more panned but was a bit too easy so I decided to zoom a little extra.  The cut off text is on purpose ... I guess it's the "menu as part of the game thing" so you have to move a little to read it.  Ok maybe not the best idea but I found it fun.  I'm thinking of added some extra levels and eventually make it more of a platform with bezier curves as the ground like this U thing (which you're right should be less zoomed).  I think it'll be a separate game or Pill Bug 2.  Thanks for playing!

It's a very simple concept and I like it. The sounds also made rolling back and forth so satisfying!

However, I think one thing that bothered me a bit was the main title screen. I understand that it was for the seamless wild card, but the camera was just too small to be able to read the title. Making it look a bit messy.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the heads up on the camera zoom.  And yes it's for the wild card (and the fact that I knew I'd run out of time to do a full menu).  I'll adjust that in the near future.  I love audio and I'm happy when someone notices that (even though it's far from perfect).  It's actually just scrunching leaves and my son's voice which made making it fun.  Thanks for playing!

Submitted

Never thought rolling back and forth could be so satisfying and fun

Developer

Neither did I!!  Thanks for playing.

I'm sorry I cannot run your game on my mac :(

Developer(+1)

Oops sorry.  I should have tested it on my Mac (it was exported from a PC).  I'm on my Mac now but it's doing a massive update.  I'll post it as a web version Friday which is after the voting but if you want to try it for fun it'll be easier.  Argh.  Thanks for the heads up, it'll help me in the future!!!

Submitted

I don't know if it's a problem with the linux export, but I don't seem to be able to collect the leaves or get eaten by the frog.

Developer

Oh wow, I didn't know that.  Hmm it must be the linux export wow.  I'll test it on a linux machine Friday.  It'll be after the vote but it'll help my in the future, thanks for the heads up.  I'll also try to post a web version Friday in case you want to try it.

Very simple, original, and decently polished. Good job!

Developer

Thanks for the great comments and for playing of course!!

It's a lot of fun to just roll around in the "arena" and scuttle up the walls. I find it impressive, that you get so much out of two frames of pill bug grafics. Very resourceful way of animating your character.  The scuttle sound, however, gets pretty irritating  and/or loud after a while. Seems like the sound effect is stacking or something? Anyways, not the biggest deal in the world. Got to 31 Leaves eaten! Biggest gripe with the game though: The frog is waaay to cute to be my mortal enemy. I want to be their friend.

Developer(+1)

Thanks I'll tone it down on the leaves crunching.  It literally is dried leaves crunching.  Initially the leaves looped into about 100 sounds instantly which made me laugh, it was a machine gun of leaves.  I'll see if there's any other errors there.  Thanks for playing!

Submitted

First of all, pillbugs are great. Secondly, it's pretty fun trying to get this little guy his dinner before he becomes dinner. I appreciated the deep lore reveal that the frog is his arch nemesis lol. Best I could do was 27 leaves eaten. It took my first run to realize that the frog doesn't just swallow you up, but damages you each time you crawl/roll in front of him. Maybe some sort of more obvious audio cue would help or if I was just not paying enough attention.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback.  There's a little "croak" as you pass through the frog and Pill Bug glows a bit red but you're right it's not that obvious.

Thanks for playing!
