Hey guys, a pretty aesthetic game. Could've used some instructions(like in game text/dialogue). Would've made the gameplay seamless.

Love the visuals and the atmosphere. Post processing on point.

Btw, try my game out and give me your views on it, yeah? :)

I would have really liked to add voice over 'open your eyes' and then I couldn't think of anything but Breath of the Wild

Submitted

Or maybe something like the iconic 'you're finally awake'. X)

True that man. "Linky" feels with the open your eyes.

Developer

I really want to make the blinks start up again when you are running out of time, that would be really cool, and when you reach an area it saves a checkpoint so you can start their, and keep exploring.

Yeah. Like you think of a  million mechanics during the design phase, but in the end you gotta cut down and prioritize. You realize 48 hours really isn't as long as you think it is. I had to pretty much chop my game mechanics and content in half.

I believe getting the game out without major bugs and the game being fun on top of that is an achievement :)

Very cool asthetic, but I would be careful submitting something that relies so heavily on prebuilt assets for a 48 hour game jam. The first note also has a problem showing a message from the developer of the package to the developer of the game over the top of the note the player should be reading. https://assetstore.unity.com/packages/templates/systems/horror-fps-kit-82643

Developer

Thanks, yes it uses the inventory system from a horror asset, that first note must have been left on the ground, I think there is a blood bag somewhere in the grass too.

This has an incredible atmosphere - although I would give the option to skip the beginning part (opening your eyes slowly) the second/third/fourth etc. time you play - or at least shorten it. Love the music and art though

Being unable to stay awake is called "narcolepsy"

Developer

Good point, this was made for the GMTK Game Jam about being 'out of control' I tried to make a game about how we don't have control over staying awake or going to sleep, we are bound by a constant rhythm.

The post-processing affects go a long way to mesh these stylistically random elements into a cohesive aesthetic, but I do wish the filters were toned back a bit. It's great for screenshots, but it's a bit hard to tell what's happening sometimes in-game. Also pretty unclear what the player is meant to be doing, some text at the beginning could've been a big help pointing in the right direction.

Developer

Try running the game at max resolution, the pixilation will be less apparent.

Note how it starts very pixelated and over 30 seconds becomes clearer as your eyes open - perhaps it should become even clearer if you can survive long enough.

What am I supposed to do?

Developer

Find food, stay awake, try going north, follow the sun.

Submitted(+1)

Cool aesthetics and immersive. Wish the goal was more clear.

Developer (1 edit)

Follow the sun, it moves across the sky and shows you where to go - subtle I know.

The goal is to stay awake, you can find four areas where there are food.

Thanks for playing the game :)

Wow! great game! loved the art, but I would have added a instructions. Good entry

The aesthetics are on point. It's a mix between synthwave and cathodic tv, with a pinch of tequila sunrise in it. Really interesting.

Really love the aesthetics! So interesting :)))

This looks so promising! Sadly I can't test it yet, but I will try to grab the first Windows I will see :D My Macbook Pro 2015, macOS Mojave 10.14.6 only opened it and kept a black screen. After 5 Minutes of "circle of death" still nothing. Maybe this helps a tiny bit :)

Developer

Hi, if you can see the startup screen it should run ok.

Try this:

Select 'New Game'
Then when the game starts hit esc, it will open a menu where you can select graphics, lower the resolution and it should be ok, there is a bug with the eyes opening which is different depending on your resolution and aspect ratio.

Thanks for checking it out :)

Submitted

Hi! Shot for your reply! But it doesn't start for me at all. No startup screen ... just ... pure darkness. :D Don't worry I really want to check it out and will try on a Windows soon.

Developer

Cheers,

The game was built in Unity on a Mac, so should run ok, I'm on Mac OS Catalina.

This is very weird. So, I just blaim it on me. Don't mind me ;)

Gourgeous game, such an imersive experience

Well done! I felt really immersed.

Impressive what you can do in 48 hours

Love the visuals, great work!

While I really love the aesthetics, (and especially the post processing render materials), I find it a bit difficult to believe this was done in only 48 hours xD

Would love to see this game be expanded upon, I think it lacked a tutorial, as I couldn't really figure out how the game worked

Developer (2 edits) (+1)

Thanks, I did use a first person controller and inventory system, without these it would have been difficult to build a 3D game.

The hard part was a count down on time, basically you lose health each second, and you can eat and drink food to stay awake.

The art style is mostly achieved through post processing and some assets that I could use to full out this island.

The typeface is my own, I designed which is why it's all in uppercase as there is no lower case - kinda funny, I think it suits this game really well in it's cinematic widescreen presentation.

There are items you can find in the game and inspect - you can eat food there to stay awake and find the next 'checkpoint'. (Spoilers)

Hope you enjoyed the game.

thanks for the reply :)

Very nice audio visual trip, the atmosphere really is spot on !

Submitted

Love the visuals an aesthetic, goes really nicely with the game! Small bug I encountered, if you fall asleep inspecting an object (I think this is how it is triggered) you can't click retry or main menu, and you can continue to  walk and look around, otherwise, great game!

Developer

Congrats on finding the items, there are four areas where you can pick things up, see if you can find them all - I was thinking of adding checkpoints to each area so you respawn/wakeup there.

That's an unfortunate bug, I'm guessing the UI is in front of the buttons, oh dear.

Awesome visuals and concept!

This has some really interesting and cool graphics.  My week laptop doesn't do it justice, but it looks awesome. Nice work!

Developer

Thanks, once the game starts you can press escape and change the resolution, it actually looks great at lower resolutions.
