A really polished and well-made match-3 game. I like the gradual palette changes. The music is outstanding, really funky and perfectly suited for a chill puzzle game like this. Graphics are nice and the gems are easily distinguishable even with a limited palette. If you continue developing I'd love to see some more gameplay elements introduced as you progress levels to keep things fresh. Nicely done with your entry mate!

A really good port of a match-3 game. Good job. Love that the palette changes every level, it makes it interesting to complete a level since in this type of game, it can get repetitive. I was not a big fan of the purple palette of Level 4 due to the contrast of my monitor, it was a lot harder to look at (I was happy it turned to teal afterwards!)

Great job, the music is awesome too! The jewel sprites are all enough different to notice them too despite the limitation in the colors.

Developer

I was very close to remove the purple/blue palette, but decided to keep it in. I wanted to desaturate it a bit and turn it even more purple, but kept it as it is :(

Really good match 3 game the graphics are good and the music doesn't get old, so the game is all around good.

The only problem I have is that its very basic match 3 and there are no new or different mechanics.

Very solid little match-3 game! Loved the presentation, palette transitions on level change were a particularly nice touch :)

I love games like this! Good job!

A fun well polished puzzle game! Loved the little details like spinning the selected jewel and highlighting combos. Enjoyed the music as well. Gameplay could use a little more, but you've got a solid foundation!

The visual and music are really rocking the game and made it worth ! But the gameplay is a little too simple... It lack a twist or something. But that's on point to the "game boy" theme so I cannot say it's that much of a flaw

Developer

Yes, I felt like I could add more things to the gameplay. It took way too long to get my spaghetti code to generate a playable board and check for gameover, so I didn't have any time to add anything else :(

Tried the game until level 3. It’s a really well done game and I liked the satisfying sound wheny you finish a extra combination :D I think it’s made with SDL, so even more effort from your side I appreciated. I just have few problems with the game. One is personal, because I like the fact you switch palettes and, even if the competition allows four colors per screen, that was a risky choice, because it improved the game, but I don’t think it’s really gameboy-ish. If the gameboy was able to do that, then it’s ok for me :) The other problem is technical, for some reason I can’t shutdown the game on Windows, I needed to terminate the process for closing it. So I liked your game really much, maybe add more variety to the game (so, not only combinations, but maybe some special blocks?).

Developer(+1)

Should have added some more messages about how to close the game in the main screen. There is a pause menu if you press Enter, from there you can save and exit the game! The color palette changes, I wanted to give the game a bit more of a Gameboy Color vibe than anything, even the music was heavily inspired by Tetris-DX on the GBC ;)

Special blocks are definitely in the cards if I'm going to continue working on the game! Maybe even make a "separate" version where each gem has its own color, with a more GBC aesthetic.

So Jewels! 2 can be a thing :D

This is quite addictive!

I love puzzle games like this :D super cute music too.

I wish the category for gameboy-ness was here. Puzzle games just work well for the system. The jewels tend to blend together a bit but that is to be expected when you only have four colours. Perhaps it would have been better for readability to make the jewels simpler so that they could be more distinct like what tetris did. Of course that is for gameplay. Individually all the jewels look great and the spin animations are nice.

Developer (1 edit)

At one point I considered the opposite and wanted to add a 7th gem type. Crazy, isn't it? Now I feel better about not adding it in, probably the pieces would have blended too much together. I might release a separate version which has every gem type use its own color palette.

Nice and polished puzzle game. The jewels look a bit similar at first, but I got used to it. Maybe playing with brightness variations (some jewels could use more of the brightest color, others more of the darker one) besides the shapes could help. The palette changes with levels was a nice touch!

Cool game!

The simplest example of good fun! I appreciate and respect how the pieces are easily conveyed and different from one another with such a small sprite size and colour palette limitation. The music was also a great fit, it was some nice thinking music while trying to pull off some cascade. Also the suspense of the rising tones when pieces match from falling was a very nice touch.

This game is very clean. I'm a fan of puzzlers. I got all the way up to level 6, just shy of 25k points. Ended up playing for way longer than I expected. (sign of a well-executed game) I like the classic time-tested "gem bottle".

Submitted(+1)

Very fun and polished! If I had to make a suggestion I would say the different shapes are a little hard to tell apart, especially with some of the later color palettes. Other than that, though, I really enjoyed it. Great work!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

I struggled to think of shapes that would be distinct enough. I was even considering adding a 7th gem type but with 4 colors it's just too much I think. Glad you enjoyed it!

The music is very good. The game is very polished. But i would like a little more challenge

I reached the level 5! 10150 points

Developer(+1)

True, the game is way too easy as it is. Maybe a 7th gem type, or a different way of playing would make the game harder!

Submitted(+1)

Got to level 4! 5470 points heh

A small, polished experience, really good at what it is. Music is fantastic, especially the intro theme, absolute 🔥🔥🔥

Great work on the gem animations and sound design. I do feel like the palettes could've used a bit more work - after level one visual the clarity takes a hit that I didn't see recover until the end.

All in all, lovely puzzle game!

Developer

The colorschemes were a bit shoehorned in, I have to say. I tried making them more pleasing to the eye, but in the end I decided to keep them as they are. The blue colorscheme in particular I found hard on the eyes but still kept it in.

Very solid, clean puzzle game! Really dig the theme tune. The color changes are a nice touch as well.
If I had any suggestions for extra features, maybe a hint system or some kind of time limit? I'm not super familiar with the genre but I did get myself stuck looking for a move often.

😅

Developer(+1)

Indeed, I was considering adding a timed mode in the extra day, but decided against it as it probably would have taken more than a day to get straightened out. Glad you liked it!

Submitted(+1)

Very nice, I could definitely see myself playing a quick game when I have the time, good job!

Submitted(+1)

Fun little time waster, love this kind of puzzle games, i'm curious if there is a way to lose in this game but i had fun, filled that patented gem bottle a couple of times and i really loved the music, nice job!

Developer(+1)

There is definitely a way to lose! But the randomizer is doing too good of a job at generating valid matches... So it does take a while.
