How does your game meet GBJam's theme?
Tasks can spawn in unlucky locations (yea, yea... its not really THAT unlucky...)
I like this one a lot, personally. A very pleasant little experience. I think there's a lot of potential to make this into a unique management sim with those splashes of Overcooked. It's not often you see a game where movement is 1-dimensional, and the way it's done makes for a very interesting dynamic. The UI is also immediately clear, it took almost no time at all to understand what was going on.
It says in your page that you're planning to leave the multiple tools bug in since it makes for an interesting dynamic. I think that's a good headspace, but it does feel like a very strong exploit that you can just grab every tool at the start of the day and no longer need to think about them. I'd leave it, but try to think of a way to balance it so that it's not strictly the best option in every situation.
The fastest move speed was too much for me, personally. I might've preferred a dash button or something.
There's probably a lot of ways to evolve this experience from here. Like tools that can fill multiple meters at a time, tools that require you to be right next to the passenger instead of on the same floor, tools that take longer to fill, tools that fill meters when left on the floor, something like trash that gets dropped occasionally and needs to be disposed of, that sort of thing. If you plan to continue this, my next step would be to see how you can diversify the way the different tools work, and maybe even diversify passenger types. Plate-Up definitely makes for a good reference. I'll be looking out for updates!
wonderful! thank you for the detailed response. honestly i love that it sparks this sort of feedback. you can probably tell i had a bit of that spark but somewhat failed at the implementation (like the tasks all being the same). i think the core of the multiple tool "bug" is "wow i am so powerful and doing so much!" which is quite fun and rewarding (one other person commented that they were "really cooking" haha :D). i think the variety in the tools or variety of the tasks could give a bit of each. the tools solving on the same floor was done so i could play 3/4 players on NES which didn't even really end up happening (the original nearest job algorithm wasn't very clever)
i don't think i'll continue work on the gameboy / NES side of things but it has made me think about other simpler two player games that I could try for the next jam, perhaps even some that are simple enough for the link cable. I would like to revisit this idea soon, mainly out of my own desire to play with my family and friends. feedback like this helps a lot! thank you for playing!
Cool management sim setup here. That little dude is doing a lot in a very short period of time! I did find out that you can pick up multiple tools at once. Don't know if that was intended but it gave me a funny vision of this guy carrying all of this and sprinting around all the cars. Did make it quite a bit more simple though haha. Some music would have finished this out quite nicely. Either way, good job! It was fun to play.
very old school look!
navigating the train is a bit clunky - i feel like perhaps a jump mechanic would have been a good addition. being able to move around a bit faster might have allowed you to increase the number of passengers needing something.
would have liked a song too to add a bit of flavour and fill out the experience.
overall though, nice work!
ahh true, like more of the screen could be dedicated to tasks. the map design was supposed to make more sense in multiplayer: collision + route planning / coordination. with one person it is only unusual (especially as you don't really need to go from bottom to top in the same car). thank you for playing + thank you for the input!
Really simple, yet really fun!
Getting to choose which upgrades andthe number of cars made for a great experience in my opinion xD
Thank you for making the game!
Great, this game is an actual ROM! It also fits the aesthetic in my opinion. I had to get used to the gameplay, but once I did, I really enjoyed it!
it REALLY misses sounds and music, the concept is good and the execution is pretty smooth. good entry (:
Interesting concept but it had a bit of borkiness to the stairs and wasn't fully sure what to to be doing but still interesting.
That was interesting! A bit undercooked, but competently implemented. It reminds me of the design of Atari 2600 games.
With the second-to-last car and max open tasks, it's possible to grab all the tools and stand in one spot, servicing people forever. Ironically, getting the last car upgrade made things more difficult!
Good work! Congratulations on the submission!
thank you for the feedback! I think early "max tasks" upgrades lead to the stand and collect rewards behavior. I thought it might enable people to stack a bunch of unlocks and THEN expand cars + tools + more max unlocks. By the time i was at the point of balancing, I was still a bit unhappy with the monotony of the tasks. well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ maybe I can make something more harmonious next jam...
Interesting game! the stack of tools is an interesting thing, not sure if it’s a bug, but I’d find it hilarious if I had to see a steward doing lots of stuff at the same time on board of a train haha
it could use some music to add with the frenetic moving, and a bit of balancing in the upgrade, but it’s fun nonetheless !
also I’m sorry for the passengers I left unattended, but it’s not my fautl, the company had to bring in more staff XD
haha whereas me I did the music first and I almost have no gameplay content, which is definitely worse if you ask me XD
the best is to do a quick catchy tune right on the beginning just to avoid being in a silent world and eventually improving on it at the end (which is the usual … first rough then polish ahhh)
anyway, again great job!!
I always love an actual Game Boy game, and it was definitely full of GB Soul. I feel like this is a good starting point and could definitely be expanded, but I had fun navigating casual mode. Good job!
Tool stacking is mentioned like a bug, but it could be a feature. Once you walk/run fast enough, it's quite the challenge to stack them. Excellent game, congrats!
First of all, congratulations on getting the game to work on a ROM, which wasn't necessary but adds so much to it. I loved the casual mode! I unlocked everything and the progression feels really good.
pretty impressive to get all this working as a real gb/nes rom (i looked at gbdk and decided to not make a real gb game haha)
Interesting mechanic and I totally see the vision for the 2 player competitive version of this, the jumping around to the different trains is pretty interesting and feels it could be mastered/optimized. I felt like I was cheesing it a bit when I would just go through the train to pick up every tool at once before trying to clear a bunch of points. Maybe something like tools disappearing after a certain number of uses (i do like being able to carry multiple things for what tis worth)?
Also i don't know how intentional this was but once I was really cooking and clearing like 4 riders at once all the SFX for the wheels filling up did kind of sound like a train, which felt appropriate!
thank you for taking a look! i really appreciate the detailed feedback. i am glad the vision is there even if the tools / tasks feel a bit "simple". the tool use suggestion makes sense (i was thinking something like "tool belt" to possibly reduce clutter). also specialized cars or tasks per tool to make each a bit more unique. or perhaps customers standing up / moving around. sigh...
it is fun to use GBDK / C but I think the development speed is quite slow. maybe give it a try once or twice to get the feel. cheers!
I spent a lot of time in casual mode. It was a lot of fun to unlock stuff and get faster and faster at completing tasks. The layout of the cars made it a fun challenge to decide to stay in a car or keep moving on.
I like the minimalistic art style. I would have loved and indicator on the map where the customer are waiting. but overall, good work!
