Your game made the 2nd place in my personal rating with 28 total, one tiny point difference, congrats!

It's a great lifestyle/idle game for the Pocket Store, I believe (if ever). Very ashorthike-y, but it is good!

The running speed after ?2nd? upgrade but before ?4th? should be fixed, it's very hard to collide with green nuts now (I'm playing both GBC and PS3 ds3).

Also, dashing as down+jump killed platform-falling with down+jump, that's an issue too - well, after coupla days, I think it is OK as far as the jump is upgraded enough, but it was irritating in the playthrough. They also clash with an off-wall jump almost in every combination.

Developer

Thanks a lot for your detailed feedback! This helps a lot. Yes, there is still quite a lot that needs work. I am going to fix the most important things now after the jam. I also plan to expand quite a bit on what is already there with additional islands. Once all of that is done, I am going to revisit the controls, incase I need to make additional adjustments. Very glad you liked the game overall 😊

The NES version looks not too complex limit-wise task, maybe you should think about it

The progression system was really enjoyable... after the first few levels. The start of the game was kinda brutal if I'm being honest. But overall, the game was great. Beautiful color palette, nice art, lots of charm, catchy song.

Developer

Thanks a lot for your feedback. Glad you liked the game overall :)

Yeah, I know the beginning is pretty slow. I thought about changing it, to make sure people don't get frustrated and leave before the game actually becomes interesting. But I decided against it to make the consecutive upgrades feel more meaningful and rewarding. Probably not the best decision in order to win a game jam πŸ˜…

Anyways, I'm glad you made it past the beginning 😊

At first, I was skeptical about the game. I'm glad to be disappointed because it was a delightful surprise how everything courses after the first coconut! :) One thing that surprised me the most is the top of the trees not conflicting with the mountain parallax! How did you do that? Share your secrets, please! XD

Developer(+2)

I'm really glad you liked the game πŸ€—

The trick with the high coconut trees is rather simple - the treetops are just actors, which are aligned with the trunks of the background image.

This is also the original reason, why the higher coconuts are white. Because I had only one color to work with for the sprites and wanted to keep the palm leafs in the same color as the rest of the trees (I did not know about layering sprites yet).

To make sure this different color actually makes sense to the player, I made the white coconuts give you 3 instead of just 1 coconut. This way getting the harder-to-reach coconuts is more rewarding and makes collecting coconuts faster when you need more towards the end of the game. Plus the white coconuts give the player something to strive for from the very beginning.

That was a great idea. I gave up adding clouds to my project because we have tall houses. If I had known that trick before, I would make something similar. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, sensei! Haha!

Developer(+1)

Haha, you are very welcome πŸ€—
Looking forward to seeing this in one of your future games 😊

what an ABSOLUTE treat - the music progressing, the little quests, the art - everything was so well done: thank you so, SO much for sharing this game: i was overjoyed to see i could still continue playing and the post dialogue was so, so cute: if you update this game in the future i would be so stoked to play again and see what changed.

wonderful job with the game!!! def one of my favorites <3

Developer

Wow, thank you so much for your feedback 😊

I am thinking about adding more islands after the jam - some with new villages to populate and some for exploration and resource gathering for villager requests. I loved working on the game. Equally made me smile and frown πŸ˜…

I love this game! The diorama of the island is so cute, and it constantly surprises you! Amazing game design. I would love to see more, maybe with some less linear quests and more exploration. Highest rating so far!

Developer

Thank you so much πŸ™

I thought about adding more islands after the jam, which should add a lot more exploration. I will probably keep the first island linear so that the new skills can be introduced one by one to avoid overwhelming the players right away. Plus this gives me more freedom in the design of the later islands, as I can assume a minimum jump height and don't have to worry as much about players softlocking themselves accidentally.

Submitted(+1)

Yes definitely, I think the first island is good as it is!

Loved this one! The progression is easy and logical, the visuals are lovely (I laughed out loud at the "coconut" friend), and I'm REALLY impressed with the musical growth. I couldn't stop smiling at how adorable the whole thing turned out, very well done!

Very glad to hear it made you smile 😊

I am disgusted I tried to upgrade all my capabilities to the maximum I am stuck on the text that displays continuously, snif, I had the key, and I was going to open the door, what frustration after so much time playing!!!

Otherwise the game is very good, peaceful, we understand quite easily what to do, even if the character is really slow at the beginning, which may put off more than one :p . bravo anyway (except for the blocking bug :s )

Developer(+1)

Very sorry to hear you got affected by the bug. I have added a warning on the top of the game's page, but maybe too late for you.

None of my playtesters ever upgraded everything to max before seeing the ending credits, so this bug unfortunately slipped through.

But I am glad to hear you enjoyed the game until then 😊

Is the game over after the door is opened? If so I'll start again I think :p

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

The short answer is pretty much yes. The door is  very close to the end of the game.

If you want to try the game again, you might want to try to beat it with the least amount of upgrades possible or to beat it in as little ingame days as possible (you will be told how many days and hours it took you at the end). Then it might be more of an interesting challenge to replay the game.

SPOILERS BELOW

After you open the door you reach the mountain and can climb it in a slightly more demanding and longer platforming section. On top of the mountain you get the final villager. And then there's a little surprise at the very end 😊

I adore this game!
A little bit slow at the beginning, but as you get better, the game starts to get more and more fun.
Love the interactions with all the new residents of your island :)

10/10

Developer

Thank you so much! ☺️

Really happy to hear you like the game.

Yes, the start indeed is pretty slow. While it's intentional to make later upgrades seem more meaningful. But I can see how this might put some people off, who only want to try the game for a few seconds.

Lovely game! I adore the art style. The game progression is nice, if a bit grindy. Awesome job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot for your comment. Glad you like the game 😊

True, collecting coconuts can be a bit grindy. However I have also had playtesters, who were always like 10 coconuts ahead of what they actually needed. So I guess it depends on the individual play style. Pretty hard to find the perfect balance for everyone πŸ˜
