Some really clever ideas on display here, all presented in a very lovely way. Well done!

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed.

Really cool idea, loved the skill it took to finally balance playing the music during the night and not break my strings. Well done!

Glad you enjoyed it!

Love the concept, it's pretty neat. Playing the violin was quite difficult for me though, it would be nice to add in the UI the touch I need to press above the note :)

That's a good idea, thank you, I'll have to add that, or at least a setting for it.

Pretty interesting game! lots of components and cool art style! I was having a bit of a hard time at the beginning understanding every intuitively, but I think i got it after playing it for a bit! This was a really cool entry!

I'm glad you had a good time! In case you're interested there is an instruction manual in the downloads. It's a lot like the games I used to play on Commodore 64... You'd get a new game that looked cool but you had no idea what to do with it until you read the manual!

Was a little confused at first but after downloading the instruction manual (which was very well made btw) I understood what I must do and had really fun. Cool entry!

Thanks for saying! I worked hard on that knowing not a lot of people would probably see it, but for me "feelings" are a part of the game. When I was a kid in the 80s I used to study my C64 manuals before I ever opened the game, and if you didn't have the manual there were some times when you just had to bash random keys and see if you could figure things out. Sometimes you just couldn't! One of my favorite games was Shogun (based on the same book as the currently popular Hulu series) but I didn't have the manual, and so to this day I have no idea what I was doing for all those hours of gameplay!

What a great jam game. The management aspect along with the space invaders dream concerts. A lot of game concepts for a jam that worked well together. I can tell a lot of time and work went into this. One of my favorite Lovecraft story too. The idea of music having connection to the old gods is amazing. Excellent work.

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed! I thought the management stuff wasn't going to get done in time while I was planning it, but it all took place in a much shorter amount of code than I expected once the rest of the mechanics were in place.

I haven't read The Music of Erich Zann, but now I really want to! I had a hard time memorizing the controls, but thanks to that I got to see the spectacle of buildings being destroyed and transformed. I found it somewhat amusing that the population dropped significantly and the repair shop and bookstore ended up unusable, but the orchestra was still playing. Poetic, in a way.

Developer

Lucky for you I included the story it was based on in the downloadable files!

As far as the controls, I tried to make it as easy to remember as possible, but I played on a keyboard and didn't get to try it with a controller. The concept I had in mind was that the arrow keys are the first half of the octave and the buttons were the second half of the octave. The order of notes on each of them from lowest to highest is the leftmost button, bottom-most button, rightmost button, and topmost button, but it may not have translated the way I wanted to controller format.

I'm glad you enjoyed it even though the controls were a bit rough to get used to!

The retro style was on point! I loved it! This was really fun to play, challenging in many ways and very well put together! To be honest it impressed me.

It definitely has that feel of modern sensitivities added with the retro style that I love so much. Great work and it made me feel the loss of the citizens as I failed to protect them!

Glad you enjoyed it! Your game is one of the ones I saw I've been most looking forward to getting to, based solely on the description, so I'll try it next.

This was an interesting game, really cool you can play notes. I did make it to the opera, but not really understanding what to do or how to go back home, ran out of energy and died. Fitting way to die for a musician

Developer

You should have just gone in, gotten money for playing, and been able to go home with a button press. Did it not work that way for you, because if so there's a problem. What happened exactly?

Submitted

hmm yeah that did not happen at all. I tried to go to town, it wouldn't let me. Then practiced some music. Then went to town and said I could play. It then placed me in a scenario to fight some aliens where I had no way to get out, just play until I ran out of stamina

wasn't able to get out from here. Pop declined and game ended

Ah, I can see from the screenshot you did practice and then went to the orchestra and made 40 coins (you start with 50 and you have 90 in that screenshot). There is no play to the orchestra, it's part of the daytime management sim. You went, made money, and came back at the end of the day. When night fell the enemies attacked.

I can also see that all of your strings are broken there, and if you became exhausted that means you probably practiced too hard during the day and didn't sleep or repair your broken strings.

It looks like the game is working fine, you just weren't aware of what you were doing. In these old retro games, there were code limitations, so we couldn't put tutorial modes in... You just kind have to read the instructions or go it on your own and hope for the best.

Luckily, in the download there is a nice retro-style PDF manual that I worked hard on, so you can enjoy the game more by taking a look at that and getting the full 1980's game experience!
