that is a fun game! You had me when the shift of music appears after some time!
Really cool. good job!

Developer

Glad you liked it, thanks for playing!

A really fun game, good controls and looks nice. I like the idea of "the other world" where you can start dealing damage and the normal world to pick up ammo.

The tutorial being just a lot of text is less nice though. But at least you got one (unlike me :( )

Developer(+1)

Haha yeah the tutorial was put together pretty quickly at the end since I was running out of time and didn't want to have a wall of text in the game description to explain how it all works. Eventually it will become an interactive 'learn as you play' tutorial.

Thanks for playing!

I genuinely don't have much to say and that baffles me because this is really fun .The visuals are really nice, the controls and general feel of the game is nice,  and it has one of my favorite implementations of the theme thus far.  Good job on this one!

Developer

Thanks! Theme is inspired by Stranger Things and I thought it added a nice element to the genre. Glad you liked it!

Damn, I enjoyed playing. Good art and audio. Bullet patterns are interesting too even though I could avoid most of them by just standing in the corner without moving. Good game :)

Developer

Thanks for playing, glad you enjoyed it!
Yeah I could have done better there, I think the bat just doesn't move far enough in the first two phases. After that I think the pattern works out better and doesn't let players stand in the corner.

Submitted(+1)

Yes it was way harder in latter phases even though given the amount of bullets flying towards me I was a bit sad about the fact I could no longer hide in the corner ^^

Submitted(+1)

Really well made! The art is good, it's really charming. The effect when changing phases is really good! The Sound could be more present. It's quite quiet, we would like to hear the sound of our weapon, the tables, and especially the monster. Like it would be nice to have a "sound identity" to it other that some laugh when it beats us (which is funny ngl) Also the music is a banger! I love me some synthwave. I guess it could have been synchronised with the gameplay phases, it would have been nice, but that's just nitpicky haha. Overall great job!

Developer

Thanks for playing!
More sounds are definitely planned! It takes a lot longer than I expected to pick out or create a good sound D;

Really enjoyed this! I liked the idea with the two phases a lot. Keep up the good work!

Developer

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!

a pretty cool game but for some reason when i play on the website the cursor just lag a lot so i dont see my cursor properly and cannot aim. but its still cool

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Someone else that had weird stuttering issues was able to solve it by switching browsers. (From Chrome to Firefox in their case.)

I might include a downloadable version if I decide to put more polish and stages to it after the jam ends.

Nice job in this game, i just took a while to understand that i could only throw pencil in the upside down phase.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing!

Looks like a lot of people struggled with that - I'll make sure to explain better next time!

It's really fun!

Cool game! Took me a while to understand what the 10 second upside down "dimension" meant, but after that I've managed to play it nicely. Cute art and nice Stranger things reference :)

Developer

Thanks! Glad you liked it!

Made a mental note to explain game mechanics better or have a more full fledged tutorial next time.

i love how you can flip the desks to hide behind -almost like space invaders in a bullet hell way.  The graphics are awesome and overall very fun!

Really cool game took a second to realize that you can only shoot in the upside down but that made it really enjoyable it made you want to keep playing good job.

Developer

Thanks!

The plan was to have an interactive tutorial to explain that mechanic better but ran out of time unfortunately :v

Submitted(+1)

I liked it, and in particular the fact that you can only shoot while in the dark zone

Developer

Glad you enjoyed it!

Awesome well-crafted pixel art shooter. Really original theme too. Shooting pencils was really fun, the controls are really snappy and fast-responsive.

Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for playing!

An excellent entry that looks good, is fair, and fun to play.

PROS:

  • Love the pixel art, both style and animation is quite good. Even the tutorial has a lot of character in the presentation.
  • The projectile movement creates a nice smooth ramp of difficulty escalation and they're very forgiving.
  • The audio was appropriate and unobtrusive so it set well into the world.
  • I actually quite like the "other world" mechanic that lets players brain-switch between attack and dodge mentality.
  • IFrames when hit are nice and forgiving and definitely got me out of a tight jam towards the end of one of my sessions.
  • I actually love the monster push keeping players in line in terms of where they can and can't go.

CRITIQUE:

  • The "other world" could probably use more feedback about when a transition is about to occur. Possibly the boss flashing for a couple of seconds and/or playing an animation to give a nice little warning.
  • Before the diagonal projectile patterns there are definitely cheese spots on the sides where the monster doesn't manage to hit even in the "other world" projectile spam.
  • Some of the latter patterns with the large amount of diagonal projectiles seem impossible to dodge, but I didn't dedicate a ton of time to figuring that puzzle out and it does ramp difficulty to 11.

Thanks for playing!

Glad you liked the projectile movement, it took a lot of tweaking to get the patterns right, but as you say still definitely have spots for improvement.
