This is a game where you die, and can rewind, then jump on your dead bodies to progress the level.

Did you write most of the code yourself and made all the assets from scratch?
Yes, including music, and bad sound effect at the end of the level

It’s a neat idea to use your dead bodies to get yourself across the spikes.

While the rewind animation looks cool, it is WAY too slow, usually taking around 10-20 seconds before I’m allowed to do anything again. It would have been better if the animation was locked to only run up to 1 second, and speeds up to meet up with that time requirement.

There were a few times where I got softlocked because my character respawned right on top of a dead body, which meant I had to restart my entire progress. Perhaps there could be an area around the spawn where dead bodies disintegrate to prevent this from happening. There should also be an option to restart the level if the player is unsatisfied with how their dead body layout is.

I seem to respawn when I click off the window and click back on for some reason, I'm not too sure why this happens.

For the beginning of the game, I'm guessing you were trying to let the player figure out themselves how to play by making them die in the spiked area, and then have them realize they can use their bodies to get across. This actually is a great method of level design by making the players feel smart that they figured out the mechanics themselves without being told how to do so.

The one thing the beginning of the game could have needed was the locations of the control inputs. I have around 100 keys on my keyboard, and if I were a newbie who never played a PC game before then I would have no idea how to control my game. A picture of the WSAD labeled “movement” and spacebar labeled “jump” would be enough to show how to control the game.

Very cool idea! I have not seen a similar game mechanic before.

There is a lot of confusing going on tho ..but with a bit of trial and error I maneged to comlete it ^^

also the sound effects were pretty satisfying :)

The audio and effects of the rewind are really neat, this is a super fun game and a really interesting take on the theme. Nice job!

Interesting idea, although the execution is a bit strange. Waiting through each death can take a really long time, and I'd rather get right back into playing than sit through a long death. I do like the idea of potions with different properties, they definitely made the experience more interesting and enjoyable. Nicely done!

nice game but i got so confused

A great game,  but some form of UI would have been nice. A great game otherwise!

Nice idea! The game is pretty fun and the rewind mechanic is nice! The music is amazing! There was a bug where it rewinds to the previous level instead of the one you are at. It then restarts on the level you are at so it's not gamebreaking, but feels a bit weird.

The game was pretty fun. i kinda encountered a bug that even though i didnt reached the checkpoint i respawned there and the concept that you can leave the body of your dead character was really funny and interesting

It was really fun, with more levels it could work as a mobile game :)

Fun idea of game, great work!

Cool game! Rewinding time takes a bit too long, so maybe speed that up a bit. Otherwise really cool with the different potions and stuff! Great work! I also managed to glitch the game out a bit ;)

I can't run it, when I do there's a popup that shows the .exe icon with a red exclaimation (I managed to get a screenshot).

Developer

That is really interesting... I’ve never seen that happen, and I’m not quite sure what is happening.  First, make sure you just extract the zip file, and don’t take anything out, just run the You Die.exe

The idea is good, but every time i die it takes to long to continue playing, maybe a "skip animation" button could improve the game

also, you are storing repeated points in time, which makes the cube look still for far too long. a solution to avoid this might be ignoring the positions if the velocity of the rigidbody is less than some number

Developer

I did exactly your last idea right after the submission time ended, so I couldn’t implement it  :(

But yeah a skip animation button for super long ones would be perfect!

I just enjoyed building bridges out of my own numerous corpses!

Excellent mechanics. Really fun and super hard!

Graphics and idea are awesome! Btw, how positions are recording and reproducing in your game?

Developer (1 edit)

every frame, I store the position in a list of vectors, so the list will have all of the positions when the player dies, then it creates a “ghost” player that just sets its position to the corresponding place in the list throughout time.

Basically, it stores the positions in a list, then a ghost player receives that list and sets its position to the opposite of where it was in the first one so it goes backwards.

sorry that was not a compact explanation :)

Tell me if you need me to explain it better haha

Yeah, I understood you. I used position saving/reproducing in my game too, but with time span to reduce lags. Anyway, good luck in rating period!

Developer

Thanks, you too!

I like the idea and the graphics, my game is not even close to this but I did make it in 2 hours. Anyway I like the idea but  the only problem that I didn't really know what was happening at the start, I got the hang of it later in the game. But the only thing that confuses me is the thing that shoots air upwards, I still don't know what that does I instinctively thought it would push me upwards but it looks like it's just a platform

Looks good, sounds good, and the idea is great, but it needs some polishing and playtesting. I still dont know what the purple potion does...

Developer(+1)

Lol the purple potion prevents you from jumping, you can read more about it in my description.  Thanks for playing, though!

Submitted

how does preventing the player from jumping help them across  the pit near the end?

Developer(+1)

it’s more of an obstacle to avoid

Oh, I see

Fun game overall and neat design! Few things I'd like to say is that the animation takes a bit too long especially when the game is centered around setting paths by dying. I would suggest to make checkpoints so your body snaps back to the original location at the press of the key while keeping the visual display of how your body traveled. You could even take this game higher by making it vital to see your previous ways of traversing the map! Cool concept though!

Developer

Thanks!  Those are really good ideas!  Remember to rate!  :)

Cool game but I think there's two little problems.
1 - The animation for rewind takes too long, it would be great if it would be faster so I can go back to play (maybe you could do a fast backwards effect with some cool distortion or something like that)

2 - In some parts you have to die too much, I already now what to do and how to do and now I just have to keep dying to get there. This is more of a personal opinion tho.

Developer

These are both good feedback, thanks!
