In what way does your game fit the theme?
Our game fits the theme in two ways: 1. We went with a retro GameBoy aesthetic to "rewind time." 2. Being a rhythm game, our core gameplay mechanic is to rewind through a track multiple times, allowing the player to try different instruments as the difficulty increases.

Did you write most of the code yourself and made all the assets from scratch?
Yes 99% of the code was written by us during this jam. All art, music, and most sfx were also created by us during the jam from scratch.

This was epic. So well done! I loved how you worked in the theme in a way that just totally makes sense for a rhythm game! Layering tracks on top of eachother, brilliant. 10/10 from me :)

Thank you so much for playing! We had a blast making it

This game is insane! The music is awesome, it looks great and it's really fun. Honestly the only thing I can think of that I dislike about this game except the the low number of reviews it has is the difficulty, it does seem a bit hard but idk I might just be terrible. Honestly, it's the best game I've seen so far and I doubt I'll see better! Huge props to everyone in your team especially the music guy for including the lick at the end!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! And yes you noticed THE LICK

At the begging the mechanics are a bit complicated, but once you get used you to it is great. The music is great also, I had a amazing experience with this game.

Developer

I'm glad you liked it! Thanks for playing :)

as a huge rhythm game buff, i’m completely biased, but it’s really difficult for me to find a single category i would give lower than five stars. i think this game fits really well into the theme while having a twist to the familiar rhythm game formula that i haven’t seen before. the concept of playing and getting to hear each layer of a song get built onto itself is really appealing to me and you guys executed it perfectly. especially since i’ve spent a lot of time putting together stepmania charts that have tried to balance between instruments, i was immediately hit with a “why didn’t i think of this before” playing this game.

i ran about a dozen times until i finally managed to get a bad and miss-less run (got a perfect + 5 goods). the song is really nice, introducing drums and then bass works super well. the visuals are very consistent and other ambient audio like bitcrushed voice clips and sound effects pulls everything together. i love the record scratch-like reverse noise, it’s exactly what i was hoping to hear. for what can be accomplished in a week, i’m super impressed! also, nice itch page design.

all of my criticisms are minor. i didn’t find a way to leave a run and exit to the main menu, so when aiming for perfects i had to close the entire game to start over. i also didn’t see any visual for when i got a good or a bad, so it was tough for me to tell where i was off in a song. a few sections of notes definitely felt placed off time with the tune, but only ever by a fraction of a second. also, maybe i’ve just gotten used to a certain visual format, but the distance between the F and J tracks actually took some adjusting to, i might suggest keeping the distances between each vertical line the same if possible? personally, i thought the difficulty scaled really well, but i can definitely see this particular song being difficult for a new player.

okay i’ve definitely spent too much time crafting this review but i thoroughly enjoyed rhythm rewind so i had to write more than usual. you guys definitely deserve to place well in this jam, but i sincerely hope you see good reason to pursue a fully-fledged game following the results!

and… maybe even make user-created tracks possible? haha, just an idea!

Wow! thanks so much for the thoughtful response! I agree with all of your criticisms, most of which I'll just blame on it being a jam haha. I've worked with my group of friends on multiple games, but this one we scoped just right to make something were super proud of. Glad you enjoyed it! (as for user generated tracks, its possible because all of our tracks are just read in csv's that we can write in google sheets, however you would need a song that is separated into the different layers you want. worth looking into if we work on this game post jam)

Super fun and polished game! I love how you get to slowly build up the music by playing each instrument, and at the end you've created a masterpiece.

Only feedback I can think of is adding hit sounds when you hit/miss a note. Other than that, I had a blast playing it, and I hope more songs are added in the future!

Developer

Thanks! I think the one thing we really missed was having sound feedback for note hits. Initially we had some different colored particles that stuck out a lot, but we wanted to stay true to the GameBoy colors. If we end up working on this after the jam, well definitely be adding some new songs!

That first sound of the title gave me a straight up nostalgia pang, really well done! I wish this was on a controller though!

Developer

Thanks! If we add controller support, what buttons would you want the notes to line up to? I honestly hadn't thought about using a controller for this game, but it might feel ok. Because of the split notes its hard for me to see what buttons it would use.

The art style its amazing and the musics are fantastic! I really like it!

Great job! :D

Gnarly visuals and funky tunes! The game itself is quite compact but has a cozy feel that manages to capture that retro style.  It would be neat if there were notes that needed to be held, and it was amusing that you could still earn points while the track was rewinding.

Developer

Thanks! lmao i totally forgot to turn off the buttons on the rewind. I guess if you were precise and fast enough you could get DOUBLE the points.

Love the art style and music. Just addictive but really hard right off the bat.

Also DEFGECD...

Glad that you enjoy the game!

Also ;)

I love the audio and graphics.  It feels like a really funky game boy color game.  I had to crank the funky setting to 11.

Developer(+1)

Thanks lol. Crank that funky to Omega Funk Town.

Love this game so much! The idea of rewinding music and playing different instrument is awesome! Love the graphic and the music!

Developer

Thanks! See yall in 170 ;)

Haha! Didn't notice you're from ucsc too. Awesome!

Really great graphics and fantastic mellow music. I had a great time playing this, if I had any suggestions it would be to use keyboard keys that are further apart. I found following the melody relatively easy, but when it came to the double notes, I kept instinctively pressing keys that were further apart like on the game.

Developer

Thanks! I agree with some of the notes being confusing. After a bit(just playing the game 100s of times to make sure it all works) of practice I was able to do it almost perfectly, however I constantly found it hard to press with index finger on one hand and middle finger on the other. Not sure why lol.

Man, this game gives me such a good vibe, especially the "You ROCK!" at the end in compressed format. Looks like a really good concept for a full release with different chiptunes.

Developer

Thanks haha. When Riko (the person who did all the audio) sent me that file I felt the same way.

What can I say, it's a fun game even thought I'm terrible at it I couldn't stop playing.

And it goes without saying, amazing soundtrack and also presentation.

Developer

don't worry I'm terrible too, thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Great idea , nicely made. A small click sound or feedback in general for the different hits and misses would help adjust timing. Good song for the concept, it evolves nicely with each instrument.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! We'll definitely try to get that in.

Great rhythm game! The soundtrack is bloody amazing

Developer

Thanks! Glad to see you enjoy the soundtrack

I like the idea of rewinding the cassete tape! Also the audio is great! I'd like more feedback when you either hit or miss a note. Also the game seems to start off really hard, maybe ramp up difficulty over time instead.  Great Game!

Developer

Noted, thanks for the feedback!
