How does the game fit the theme?
While Oathbound may seem like a traditional boss pit, the twist is that you must lose in order to win. In this sense, nothing can go wrong, because if things go wrong and you lose, you win.

What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
Only a few of the many SFX where used from an asset pack.

How many people worked on the game?
6

The twist is definitely original and brain-racking. There's a nice balance between what seem like normal boss attacks, and a challenge in getting yourself hurt. Perhaps, if the MC seemed happier and bloodier as she got damaged, it'd have completely sold the idea.

The story is impressive, time was definitely well-spent in that regard during the week. The nordic mythos is always a delight (goofy bosses aside). The art is great too, and the choice of font.

I recommend using more transitions (fade-in, fade-out, etc) just like in the intro sequence, just to avoid the sudden appearance of things and the abrupt change of scenes.

Amazing job!

Developer

thank you so much for your kind words! thats appreciated a lot! nice feedback on the transition stuff and the player feedback as well!

Cool game! Loved the overall polish and the character design a lot. I didn't pay too much attention to the story so I killed the boss, only to discover it was a lose to win kindof game. Anyway that was a fun experience, nicely done!

I love the concept, great game!

Wow, it's nuts that this was made in under a week.
The bosses looked great, and the concept is pretty cleaver.
Flipping the boss patterns to target instead of avoiding.

Thank you so much !

i feel like the movement speed could have been increased, but apart from that great game!

Interesting idea. At the end I managed to cheeze it with my own turret that killed me everytime, otherwise I kept failing 😀

Developer

XDD nice job

A nice twist on the casual boss rush genre! I loved trying to actually get hit and rolling into danger. Neat idea with decent execution!

I love the watercolor cutscene, it tells a good story really quickly. I think the gameplay could be a bit more exciting, but the concept is really great overall.

Developer

thank you!!!

Very good art.

You can add more gameplay elements to improve it.

In the second level, when the enemy attacks, you can add shadows to show the part that is attacked.

Submitted(+1)

Good game really! it's quite hard to lose
as feedback, mays be added more sign and feedback but actually what you got work pretty well

Developer

Thank you for playing! just to be clear: you think its harf to lose as in: the bosses always dies and the reallife-player always wins, or as in its hard to lose the ingame fights and actually win? (inception ahh question)

That intro went pretty hard sheeeesh

With so many artists it's difficult to keep the art cohesive throughout, but I do wish it all fit together better. I liked the mini story and the goal of dying. I wish getting slapped felt more satisfying though (does that make me a masochist?)

Developer

Wich art you felt wasnt matching? cause i feel like that was probably just a design choice for the intro... i did the first boss, the main character and the intro cutscene... i was going for a "children book" style, cause having an 8 frame full render would have probably taken me the whole week lol!

i dont think that makes you a masochist lmao, We didnt manage to put particles for the slap in, i do think the main goal of the game should feel rewarding! so your right

hope you had some fun !

Cool game! Never thought it'd be so hard to lose a boss battle. The sounds and art are pretty nice, but I think the bosses have too little hp.

It has a neat artstyle, it lacks proper rendering at times becasue I can be behind the boss and the player sprite would be rendered in front of the boss. You can get this by changing the Sort Axis Y to 1 and have the bosses, the logs with spikes and the player be in the same sorting layer and same order in layer in the sprite renderer, and Unity will automatically render player behind the boss or the logs if they are in a higher Y position, the only thing that could happen is that you may need to play around with the pivots but normally they don't give much of an issue usually.

The SFX from the main menu and the starting cutscene I don't think they fit the game very well, they sound kinda 16bit when the rest of the SFX feel high definition, I think sticking to the hd sfxs would extremely benefit this game.

Combat is really nice, it has a unique spin to the whole genre, in which I have to porpusefully get myself killed while a something is automatically shooting homing projectiles to kill the boss before I can get myself killed. I really liked it, but I feel the bosses are extremely weak and it's pretty hard to lose before they die, specially the second boss.

Overall, good game with lots of potential in the future with a good artstyle. Good job

thanks you very much for the detailed feedback Fezak, i actually wrote a Y-sorting script, changing sprite rendere layer in regard to player position, but somehow it broke ( as you can see for eample the left arm for example is working while the rest of the body is not lol)

The Sfx thing is really valid, i also had some wood sounds in mind for the buttons, but there was little misscomunication whith our sound designer also it was his first time doing SFX.

The boss difficulty is another thing, actually i did that and i had a little bit of developer blindness where i wanted the player to make good use of the dash and the wooden logs, but ended up making the fight a little unfair...

Thank you for playing and your feedback! :)

Really good art!

I rememeber I played this game before, but looks like I haven't reated it yet. I can agree with others that game felt maybe too easy, but I think that art was the strong part in this piece. I enjoyed many different art styles! And I can see that there were six people working on this game and I love to see how artists can collaborate and mix their styles, technics.

Developer

Thanks for the playing

could you tell different artists apart? have a guess who did what if you like

Submitted(+1)

The game's visuals really caught my attention. The art is interesting, but the boss was really easy. Still, I had fun!

Developer

maybe your just goated at the game lmao

Submitted(+1)

A very unique take on a classic genre! I like that we have to let ourselves die but also use the terrain to prevent us from killing the bosses too fast! The art was also incredible, especially the cover art. I can see this expanding to include more bosses and include more gameplay! Great job!

Developer

Thank youuu!!!!

The art design and animations are excellent, evoking a nostalgic feel reminiscent of classic top-down shooters, and the overall presentation is very polished, especially for a one-week jam project. Your team made a bold, creative, and exciting entry!

Submitted(+1)

I like the picture book art! The concept is interesting! But the bosses are too weak XD!

Submitted(+2)

This art design is on point. I liked the animation and the overall concept. Trying to not conquer your trial is an interesting concept, but I really liked it. It reminded me of the old 2D top down shooter type games. Awesome job to the team. I hope they develop this further.
